Following the recent launch of the ATI Radeon HD 4850 and 4870 GPUs, AMD plans to introduce the high-end dual-GPU HD 4870 X2 by the end of July, according to sources at graphics card vendors.

Evaluation samples are schedule to be available in mid-July, and AMD will begin shipping reference design boards with 2GB GDDR5 memory at the end of the month, the sources detailed.

With a suggested price of $499, this is going to beat in performance and price the new nVidia 280....

nVidia will have to be out with the 280 X2 very quick at a nice price...

2gigs of GDDR5?!

I hope they make a 1gb GDDR5 version... 2gb is just waste of cash

Who the hell needs 2GB of VRAM?

Don't forget it's not shared memory. Like the high-end 4870 card that have 1Gb of RAM, the X2 will have 1Gb for each GPU.

Wow, ATi is on a roll. The HD 4870 X2 will cost less than the GTX 280 and perform better than it. There's nothing NVIDIA can do about it. If they were to release a GTX 280 GX2, it would cost $800+ at minimum.

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 280 - $649
ATi Radeon HD 4870 X2 - $499

Keep in mind that the 4870 X2 boasts 2GB of GDDR5 memory whereas the GTX 280 only has 1GB of GDDR3 memory.
