- (Antaris said @ #7)Don't you spell it 'cheque' in the US?
Nope it's check. We spell lots of words differently then the Brits. I read it was because we wanted to break with them in many ways after our independence which happens to be today. -
#7.2 Posted by +-Vivicidal- on 04 Jul 2008 - 14:13
- The 'que' makes the word sound more european.
-
#7.3 Posted by C_Guy on 04 Jul 2008 - 14:52
- AHEM...
Check is the American spelling.
Cheque is the Canadian spelling. -
#7.4 Posted by plastikaa on 04 Jul 2008 - 16:44
- Check is the American English spelling and Cheque is the British English variation (this is unusual - usually American spellings are variations of British ones as American English is not a language in its own right, but rather a dialect of the English Language, which since its existence has created new lexical items.)
I believe the word cheque was one of the few spellings created after the "creation" of American English by the British, and so Cheque should not be used in American English, however the use of the word Check is probably valid to some degree in Britisth English, however most spellings are becoming more trivial with globalisation - the main difference is British and American is pronounciation "rules".
On a side note, Cheque is probably deemed Canadian also, as the spelling "Cheque" by the British probably originates from French. -

Probably, in Spanish "check" is "cheque" and Spanish and French are a derivation of Latin. -
#7.6 Posted by Julius Caro on 07 Jul 2008 - 12:47
- Cheque sounds to me like it comes from french and not english.
But my spanish dictionary says that it comes from "English cheque", so I guess that cheque was first?

- Yeah that's a good idea, stealing.
Do yourself a favor and look up "stealing" on the Internet. See if it's what they call a "crime" and if so what implications that has. -

See if it's what they call a "crime" and if so what implications that has.Wikipedia saidThe actus reus of theft is usually defined as an unauthorised taking, keeping or using of another's property which must be accompanied by a mens rea of dishonesty and/or the intent to permanently deprive the owner or the person with rightful possession of that property or its use.
Copyright infringement is not stealing because you do not deprive the owner of any property. Maybe you should look up the meaning of "stealing".
Whether or not the unauthorized downloading of copyrighted material is a 'crime' is still up for debate. Morally ambiguous at best. -

- the public isn't the reason why the stimulus was in the first place. AGAIN, we(our govt) went to china with a bag and said, "please sir may I have more" like Oliver twist and then they sent out the money to the public.
Our country has borrowed more money from China that we can never pay it back. hope someone here knows chinese to teach us.

- Let's see, the "research" was done by a group called the Adult Internet Market Research Company.
Guess what this "research group" focuses on. That's right - the Adult Internet (that means pr0n folks!)
After an exhaustive internet search (at least 10 minutes) the ONLY reference to this group I found was for this "story."
For god's sake there isn't even a listing with their web address (www.AIMRCo.com - real impressive BTW).
I call BS on this.
Any increase in pr0n purchases is almost certainly directly resulting from increased GAS, FOOD & ENTERTAINMENT PRICES. Instead of taking a real girl out on a date and getting some, you lamers are staying home and WHACKIN! -

pr0n is free I thought
According to Kirk Mishkin, head research consultant for AIMRCo, "Many of the sites we surveyed have reported 20-30 per cent growth in membership rates since mid-May when the checks were first sent out, and typically the summer is a slow period for this market." The checks were suppose to be used to provide a stimulus to the flagging US consumer sector but the research found many people were using them for a different kind of stimulation.
