Check Point has issued a set of updates which correct a compatibility issue with the latest Microsoft update. The security firm has posted new versions of its ZoneAlarm Internet Security Suite, Pro, Antivirus, Anti-Spyware and Basic Firewall offerings.

The updates correct an error caused by the Microsoft Patch Tuesday update released on 8 July. One of the four bulletins addressed a flaw in the Windows DNS component, but also resulted in an error which prevented ZoneAlarm users from accessing the internet.

I can't get on the internet either. I am actually scrawling this message on a fence, using a can of spray paint.

This is to fix a major flaw found in DNS which could redirect people from legit domains elsewhere so it's better to let microsoft patch it then A/V/firewall companies patch their software before the proof of concept will be released if at all and people start trying to use it cause if left unpatched even google.com potentially isn't safe

No problems with Eset Smart Security here.

No problems with Nod32 either.
As a side note - shouldn't the image associated with this article be the new Check Point logo, since they're no longer "Zone Labs"?

This hit one of our two (nearly identically-configured) XP Home PCs the other day - very weird, I couldn't for the life of me figure out (and still can't, tbh) why only one PC was affected. The actual culprit was just as hard to pin down: connection seemed fine and pinging WAN domains worked, but IE, Firefox, no http program could get a response. IE's Diagnose Connection tool told me it was a Winsock error, but multiple resets made no difference. I only thought of checking the ZoneAlarm forums for news (eventually) because it's caused such problems in the past.

That was a pretty fraught start to my day. Big props to Checkpoint for putting out a fix so quickly, though =)

Isn't the title a bit biased? "Check Point patches Microsoft update error"?
Seriously, Microsoft screwed up, and luckily for us, Check Point is here to the rescue? I believe they fixed their own error. I reckon a security software should be able to differentiate between an official Microsoft update to system files and an unauthorized intrusion.

I agree with TekmanRO, MS has been found careless in releasing many patches biggest example is Windows XP SP3 continues booting problem for AMD users

That has nothing to do with Microsoft and everything to do with HP's crappy imaging software they use for Windows XP installations for their machines. The fact that HP hard coded their stuff rather than allowing autodetection speaks volumes for the dodgy way they must be assembling their computers.

No! ZoneAlarm is one of the most buggy software. use Kaspersky, AVG or WL OneCare

True, the only thing worse are Symantec and McAfee products - which are pretty bad.

Wouldn't argue Symantec and McAfee stink, but interesting to note no mention of their having problems with the patch too.

I use Kaspersky mainly due to the pricey 2 yr. license I still have, but would switch to NOD32 in a heartbeat regardless of potential for this issue (assuming it's their software causing it). They would likely patch theirs to work.

Or you could just use a hardware firewall and the free version of Avast.
You need a router anyways, why not get one with a firewall built into it?
#13 LoquaciousOne on 13 Jul 2008 - 07:07
True enough. People swear by AVG which I've used, but none are perfect.

Virus software doesn't run in tandem, yet the only way to know is in running several software brands, and I'm having trouble connecting to Jotti.org but can't figure out why. I've had a VPN router for years, but eventually something will manage to break through whether by accident, stupidity, or risky business.

Have become reasonably skilled at Googling removal solutions, the only true line of defense when all else fails.

Thank God I switched to Comodo (my av is Nod32 but is it highly recommended to have 2 av's installed?) 2yrs. ago.. Is there a fix for this cause' there's a desktop here that has ZoneAlarm and I was wondering what the hell happened after the patch updates last Tues. when it was working a week before. The thing could no longer establish an online connection or anything..
#15 hardgiant on 13 Jul 2008 - 19:46
I've used Zone Alarm for years and had no problems with them. It's easily one of the most misunderstood firewalls. Windows is so complex that so many files and components need access to the internet and Zone Alarm can be over zealous in protecting the user.

#16 LoquaciousOne on 15 Jul 2008 - 07:36
Never had luck with Zonealarm. Funny thing about Kaspersky is it never seems to expire after I bought a two year scrip and am beginning to think they are adding time to keep from removing it? Stranger things have happened.

Whenever I try to run two of either firewall or AV they tend to conflict, so am careful about not doing that.

Got Jotti.org connected again, strangely enough. Think it was a Vundo variant Superantispyware spotted the other day.... how'd that slide by? Well, main thing is it's gone now!
