A group from Brazil has managed to unlock Apple's iPhone 3G handset just days after its release. The unlocked iPhone is displayed and demonstrated in an online video on a Portuguese-language news blog. An unlocked iPhone can be used with any Sim card and service provider.

IPhone user Bruno MacMasi said in an interview with Gizmodo that the unlocking process involved modifying the Sim hardware so that the International Mobile Subscriber Identity can be overwritten and removed from the original network. A similar process was used to unlock the original iPhone last year. Separately, a group of researchers known as the iPhone Devteam has released the first 'jailbreak' software releases for the iPhone 3G and the iPhone 2.0 software update. The 'jailbreak' term refers to the process of removing the software controls which prohibit users from installing software outside of the iPhone App Store.

Care to divulge more information instead of just shouting "bs"?

Be careful...
You got to pay a fine in the US if you purchased an iPhone but didn't activate it with AT&T...

Yes, but the news story is wrong because no jailbreak for 2.0 has been released. Maybe 2.0 beta but not 2.0

I thought it was unlocked before it was released in the US...

Apple OS v.2 sure must be weak if it was hacked in only a day or two

This news should be removed, theres false statements in it.

You haven't provided any proof that it's false.

"An unlocked iPhone can be used with any Sim card and service provider"

A unlocked iphone can only work on GSM. T-mobile and ATT are the only ones in the US.

"iPhone Devteam has released the first 'jailbreak' software releases for the iPhone 3G and the iPhone 2.0 software update"

Do you see where it says they released 2.0 jailbreak? http://blog.iphone-dev.org/

It would be all over the jailbreak forums too. I feel like a nerd wasting my time to prove you wrong.

You look more like a nerd freaking out and getting your panties in a twist over some speculated inaccuracies in an insignificant cell phone article...

Insignificant cell phone article! Oh no you didn't! Do you even have a iphone because you would know how much people with them want a 2.0 jailbreak to come out.

LMAO @ the "any sim card" inaccuracy just because the US only has two GSM compatible networks? ALL carriers in Europe and I guess latin america too use GSM. I mean WHO doesn't use GSM?
#8 smithy_dll on 16 Jul 2008 - 20:22
You can buy it unlocked in Australia straight from Optus. No big deal.
#9 C_Guy on 16 Jul 2008 - 21:32
Seems the iPhones are as difficult to "unlock" as Apple's DRM.
#10 +Kussie on 17 Jul 2008 - 06:23
As pointed out above, the unlocking of the phone is no big deal down here. You can get them unlocked for a small fee (Around $50AUD) by the phone providers down here (Both Optus and Telstra will unlock it for you)

**** Apple, I hope they lose money because of people unlocking them and using them on other networks.

What do you think happens when a phone is unlocked??? You get a check for $200???

Apple makes money regardless of if its being used on ATT or a different network.
#13 +Jedimark on 17 Jul 2008 - 11:24
Is there much of a market for unlocked 3G iPhones? Don't you have to commit to a contract when you actually buy the device (hence why it only costs £99) - so surely everyone with an iPhone 3G is on a contract and hence selling it on probably isn't financially sound. And when they come out on PAYG the device will cost a fortune anyway.
#14 MrA on 17 Jul 2008 - 12:25
Is this an actual unlock, or yet another person using a Turbo SIM?
#15 utide_carry on 21 Oct 2008 - 01:09
Unless you travel to Hong Kong and buy one, or use this tool to unlock the iPhone 3G and suffer cause you can't use the internet (no working baseband hack yet, although the dev team has gotten modified baseband code to function, so there's hope), you're going to have to buy one of those unlocking SIM cards. I personally will wait to get a 3G iPhone till the dev team releases their program, which should be soon!
