EU thumps Intel with more anti-AMD charges

It's true. The European Union has thrown a new set of anti-trust allegations at Intel. Earlier this week, rumors swirled that the EU would spring into action, adding charges to a European Commission investigation against Intel that's been going since 2001. Now the extra charges have arrived, with EU regulators accusing Intel of three new bits of "abusive conduct" designed to wound AMD's place in the x86 processor market.

"First, Intel has provided substantial rebates to a leading European personal computer (PC) retailer conditional on it selling only Intel-based PCs," the EU said in a statement. "Secondly, Intel made payments in order to induce a leading Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) to delay the planned launch of a product line incorporating an AMD-based CPU. Thirdly, in a subsequent period, Intel has provided substantial rebates to that same OEM conditional on it obtaining all of its laptop CPU requirements from Intel."

Damn right they are, and with good reason:

"...provided substantial rebates to a leading European personal computer (PC) retailer conditional on it selling only Intel-based PCs ... made payments in order to induce a leading Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) to delay the planned launch of a product line incorporating an AMD-based CPU ... substantial rebates to that same OEM conditional on it obtaining all of its laptop CPU requirements from Intel."

That's very anti-competitive, and illegal, so if true, Intel deserve everything that they get.

The problem is everyone ignores the IF part and just assume it wasn't just another AMD screw up that slowed down adoption of their chips.

I agree with the e.u. for a change.

If it is true, then who knows what will happen to intel, maybe a European ban.

Finally! It was about time..
If it wasnt for AMD we would still be reaching for the Megahertz sky on a single core, x86 CPU.

It's very foolish to credit one company's success to the mere existence of it's primary competitor. But, hey, lash out at Intel for no reason, it looks SO COOL!

Funny that you should say anything about somebody lashing out at a company.

Didn't Intel learn from when MS tried doing this?

Ahhhhhh that's a lot of smoke and mirrors to cover up the real story here:

"CRAP! We spent all of Microsoft's money already! What's another successful American company we can target to refill our pockets?????"
#6.1 Majesticmerc on 18 Jul 2008 - 17:58
Maybe if these companies didn't abuse their monopolies and use illegal business practices then they wouldn't get fined in the first place.
#6.2 JJ_ on 19 Jul 2008 - 00:04
No, more and more american companies are becoming a bunch of douches

Back in the Pentium D versus Athlon 64 x2 days Intel was getting beat pretty bad in our local shop. Intel reps descendant upon us offering all kinds of sweet incentives which all revolved around us selling less AMD cpu's. They also hinted at supply disruption on newer faster cpu's if we didn't take the deal.

Today we don't even offer any AMD cpu's, we caved to the pressure.
