The latest Asus Eee PC models have hit shelves in the UK. The new 10in Eee PC 1000(H) and 1000 retail for £349 and £369 respectively. The new models incorporate Intel's Atom processor and offer Bluetooth and 802.11n Wi-Fi connectivity.

Both are housed in a larger chassis than their predecessors, catering for the bigger 10in screen and a slightly larger keyboard. The 1000(H) model uses a traditional 80GB hard drive and runs Windows XP as standard. It weighs in at 1.45kg.

NB: Article is for 'eee PC' (laptop), yet 'eee Box' (desktop) is shown.
The article at vnunet has the correct image.

You can get a full laptop for lower and it has a 14" screen at least.

I don't want a large laptop, I think you're missing the point of what this model is all about.

MSI Wind is only a 3 cell battery, last half the time. This has a 6 cell battery
Depends what you want and do with it is what matters.

So, you believe that you should have to pay more for less? Like the difference between the smaller US gallon and the larger Imperial gallon? When the US gal first came out it was a means to make more money off of a smaller volume since you would pay the same as an imperial gal....

Oh dear the eee PC has lost it's purpose, it was origanly made to be a laptop that just about anyone could buy for about £200, for £369 you could get a proper laptop from Dell with much higher specs.

Yeah, I noted that confusing direction, too.

They found a low-end niche and had explosive sales. So, they start following that up with bigger and more expensive models, essentially making small notebooks and competing with established market leaders.

Ah, but Dell is Quantity, and I'd like to believe Asus is still Quality...

So a £349 system from Asus should be better Quality than Dell, specs aside.

And I'd personally buy the lower spec'd Asus any day.
#3.3 Exosphere on 23 Jul 2008 - 15:29
Maybe you misunderstand the direction they're still heading, and it's all about SIZE.
You can't buy a Dell (yet) with anything smaller than a 13" screen, I'm personally more interested in this model than all the other EEEPC's because at last it's got a spec I can actually use without squinting at a 7" screen in low res.

Besides, EEEPC have started the ball rolling now, this has quickly become the biggest growth in new PC sales. Even Microsoft have had to extended XP's life to suit this new breed of computer.

901 is smaller and retails less than the 1000, and runs the same screen resolution. The 900 will remain for sale as well.

They have just moved from offering only low-cost units to offering different tiers of units, designed to fit different peoples usages.

What's the battery like on this thing? Have they put in a crap battery compared to other countries, or a good one? Have their learnt their lesson yet?

I assume you didn't read the bit that stated 7.5 hours.

Why is everything about cost?

Cheap cheap cheap, that's all you hear.

I'd rather something that's DURABLE, not CHEAP. So, the Asus is a little more expensive, and given their history, I'd assume it's manufactured with greater quality control.

Oh noes! This laptop is too expensive!!11!1&!987

You. Get. What. You. Pay. For. (or, at least, you should)

That's it, I'm going to go start a computer company and offer only the best damned hardware out there.

Your little rant is 100% well ranted. Couldn't agree more.
#5.2 +Odom on 24 Jul 2008 - 06:27
Obviously you totally missed the point of the Eee PC in general. If we were talking about laptops in general I'd agree with you, but regarding the Eee PC you couldn't be more off.

hmm, it arrives in the UK but where. it's really hard to find.
#7 TheNay on 23 Jul 2008 - 21:08
I got one here in Canada last week, I love it, compared to the 901 and other Eee's this is by far the best!!!
#8 sourc3 on 23 Jul 2008 - 21:21
I had the 901. Keyboard was too small for me to comfortably do something (I'd get cramps). I need at least 11.1" to comfortably type (I use it on the train to do a lot of typing). Although I need something ultra light, I figured that I cannot work with keyboards if I cannot touchtype. I am hoping there will be an 11" version soon! (I don't want to get the Sony TZ I am drooling over due to cost).
#9 Ender2070 on 24 Jul 2008 - 02:15
Despite the 6 cell battery it's still going to have less battery life than the Linux model.
#10 Slugsie on 24 Jul 2008 - 08:52
Well, this completely misses the point of the original 701s. I like my 701 4G a lot, the only thing I'd really change is to put a higher resolution screen in, and make it a touch screen too. Keep the price to around £240 all in and you'll have another winner.
