AMD to Discuss Rival for Intel Atom Towards Year End

The market of ultra low-cost personal computers (ULCPCs) is on the rise these days as many PC vendors are looking forward to add appropriate products into the lineup. Nonetheless, Advanced Micro Devices, the world’s No. 2 maker of x86 central processing units (CPUs), is not particularly enthusiastic about such systems despite of the fact that it does have a processor to address the segment.

Answering a question about AMD’s response to Intel Corp.’s Atom processor, the new chief executive officer of the company, Dirk Meyer, said that AMD was looking forward the market, but would discuss actual products only in November, 2008. The chipmaker cited the fact that it was a much smaller company compared to Intel and could not offer a competing device shortly after the rival’s product launch.

Why wouldnt people take AMD seriously? Just because Intel is ahead of AMD at the moment doesnt mean AMD is out of the game or that it shouldnt be taken seriously. I remember a time not that long ago AMD processors were faster and better than Intel. Intel is now out on top so AM needs to step it up. Competition is good for consumers.

And given the fact that intel never gave us real technological advancement but only higher levels of integration (integrated memory controller anyone) and is now following AMD lead..
..I bet you like it when intel drops their prices because of AMD so ..
just STFU dude.

lol you make me lugh so hard ... look who is talking integrated memory controller and yet that didnt help AMD to bet Intel dual dies cpu (Quadcores )

just wait for Intel nahalem October of this year if there are no delays and watch Amd top end prossors just competing lowest ended intel cpus and losing !

they will return to there ol' home(cpus value segment ) to bad for the the costumers

true it didnt help.... maybe because of intel's unfair competition?? ever hear of the EU and the lawsuits?? and the simple fact that intel has the budged of a small sized country compared to AMD (and they still manage to suck on the innovation side of things)??

oh.. true.. you most likely cant read. crawl back into your cave please.

What do the lawsuits about unfair sales practices have to do with the fact that AMD processors can't keep up to Intel ones?
Nothing, that's what.

So Intel never innovates...hmm. That must be the reason that Intel's processors have been destroying AMD's for the past few years.

And you call us trolls, geez

nono.. dont misunderstand.. I call YOU a troll.

read the papers. the EU has filed a suit against intel because apparently they 'convinced' a major OEM to delay the launch of one of AMD's most important products.

and no, intel hasnt come up with anything revolutionary really, they quad cores are not native and the only thing they brought to the table was a very high scale of integration (with all the benefits this offers of course, nonetheless you can hardly call this innovating).

enjoy the integrate memory controller in nehalem.. if you have enough money to afford one that is.

So please enlighten me all-knowing-one, what "innovation" has AMD brought to the table in the last 2 years?

native quad core and integrated memory controller are just two of them.
oh and i dont remember you can throttle the individual cores down with an intel CPU.. but that prolly doesnt mean anything to you..
Innovation is not just squeezing the last MHz from a CPU, which is what intel has been doing all along. the reason? well it was a smart business decision given the capital availability and the fabs they have. Not much investment in terms of R&D, but a lot of money spent getting to those 45nm, which they would have spent anyways along with all the other competitors sooner or later.
I said that before, you still cant read..

TBH
this first release of the Atom is probably gonna be the suckiest in any case.
There will be dual cores too, and that's where AMD is probably going to chime in, no point doing it now as there are too many competitors better placed on the market.
#3 Kushan on 24 Jul 2008 - 22:26
I'd rather they discussed a serious competitor to Intel's desktop or server CPUs, but what the hell, any kind of competition is good competition.
#4 coolkat007 on 25 Jul 2008 - 00:03
atom dualcores are estimated to be released between 50-60 quid. hopefully AMD, if at all develops dual core chips in time, will beat that price and gives us better umpc options

As is usual lately, AMD talks a big show but just keeps scrambling to catch-up to Intel's lead.
The only thing AMD leads on is the budget segment of the market, and that's only because they had to slash their prices to stay in the market at all. The Barcelona chips keep getting their asses kicked by Intel's Conroe and Peryn generations in the benchmarks, and the ATi division has proved to be nothing but a drag on AMD's neck. Seriously: They shelled out a ton-o-cash to buy ATI, and it's been nothing but a money-looser for them since then. It seems AMD can't win for loosing.

LOL
where do you live, on the moon??

ATI is the only thing that is saving AMD from bankrupcy at the moment.
who do you think manufactures all the HD4850 and 4870?

hopefully AMD gets back on track and becomes king like it was from around 2000-2001 all the way til mod 2006-ish.

AMD FTW. Big fan of the underdogs.
