Have you ever looked at Google and thought: "There aren't enough search results here"? Well, surprisingly, you are not alone. Today marked the launch of a new search engine, known as Cuil (pronounced Cool). The founders claim that with 120 billion (yes, 120,000,000,000) sites indexed, that they have 3 times the total sites indexed of the market leader Google.

"The Web continues to grow at a fantastic rate and other search engines are unable to keep up with it,” said Tom Costello, CEO and co-founder of Cuil. “Our significant breakthroughs in search technology have enabled us to index much more of the Internet, placing nearly the entire Web at the fingertips of every user. In addition, Cuil presents searchers with content-based results, not just popular ones, providing different and more insightful answers that illustrate the vastness and the variety of the Web."

View: Cuil

Not all is as perfect as it seems, however: Cuil has had some downtime today, with many googlcuilers reporting that the search results came up empty with an apology that there was too much traffic to process their request. In addition, some of those who have gotten results have complained that they weren't relevant, or that they found the "magazine style" of the results too cluttered; however, as with many new technologies, not everyone will be happy. So, Neowin users: how do you find Cuil so far? Let us know in the comments!

Also, I'd like to make a quick shout out to - jigz - and guruparan for submitting this to our newsdesk, we really appreciate it!

Try to type in "neowin" and hop to the 4th page, something not nice(NSFW) shows up even with safe search is on

Lol - thats disgusting! Definatley something that should be exluded from a safe search. It seems while they may be from google they are definatley a long way off being a competitor to google or even live search.

btw - whats the neowin thumbnail all about on cuil?

Didn't find my website
#3 sonrah on 28 Jul 2008 - 22:27
Ditto on not finding website. I search for Romsource, and it's the first result back by Google, MSN, Yahoo, and Ask, but it doesn't even show up on Cuil.

Wow the interface is 10x better than Google but the results sure aren't.
#4.1 Airlink on 28 Jul 2008 - 22:41
Er... it's a black interface background instead of a white background.
I know that black is the new black and all that, but... get a grip.

He probably meant the search results layout..

120 billion sites? Doesn't google have 1 trillion now?

Google has 1 trillion URLs. Cuil claims 120 Billion Sites. I took Googles claim to mean more than one URL per site, but that article didn't specify how many sites.

I, like everyone else, like how cuil displays results, but think the results themselves are lousy.

I tried to search for my name. I saw a result with a thumbnail. And guess what? The thumbnail didn't even come from my site.
#7 eilegz on 28 Jul 2008 - 23:08
No results because of high load...
Due to excessive load, our servers didn't return results. Please try your search again.

first time i see this on a search engine
#8 XerXis on 28 Jul 2008 - 23:18
said in the forums, gonna say it again:

horrible search results, bad interface, and wtf do the little photos have to do with the returned items?
#9 seamer on 28 Jul 2008 - 23:44
If the guys worked at Google in a capacity related to Search, I wonder how their NDAs will be applicable here. If Cuil takes off, Google may have itself a free product.
#10 +abulfares on 28 Jul 2008 - 23:46
im sticking with google, thats for sure
#11 thejohnnyq on 29 Jul 2008 - 01:38
it found my site, but linked the picture to some else, (johnnyq quigley). Search results return screwed up most of the time or crashes.
#12 Shiranui on 29 Jul 2008 - 01:45
They'll have to come up with a better name if they want to be taken seriously.
#13 +GreyWolfSC on 29 Jul 2008 - 01:50
Searches are returning:

So I guess my search results are nonexistent.
#14 cork1958 on 29 Jul 2008 - 03:31
Whew!!

That's NOT so "Cuil!!"
#15 Chipshop on 29 Jul 2008 - 09:34
If it finds any results they're not exactly relevant
#16 +metal_dragen on 29 Jul 2008 - 11:56
Searched for several different things, including several of my client's trademarks and other search keywords. The results are questionable at best, with most linking to link farm sites and squatters.

Until they provide much better search results, I'll stick to a search engine that provides more meaningful results, even if they index fewer pages (which in the case of link farms and squatters, is a good thing).
#17 witalit on 29 Jul 2008 - 12:34
wow cuil give up now google has already crippled your site, its a losing battle!
#18 Ikshaar on 29 Jul 2008 - 13:38
trying "wow" gave me a dozen gold selling spammers results for wow but not World of warcraft ...

Not sure I would call that a "breakthrough" or "more insightful answers" for that matter.
#19 NXTwoThou on 29 Jul 2008 - 13:41
Good lord, that's the worst search site I've been to. What's with the images next to the links? Its like they have some bag of pics and just randomly pull stuff out. They have nothing to do with the link in question. The results are **** poor at best and seem to target crapware sites rather than real businesses.

Maybe cuil is what was culled as crap from good search engines.
#20 Quick Reply on 29 Jul 2008 - 16:27
nice idea/layout but the results stink.
they should collect some information from users if they are to improve their search results.
#21 Matt A. Tobin on 30 Jul 2008 - 05:41
