Rumor: New iPod nano to feature a Zune-like screen

According to various sources, the upcoming fourth generation iPod nanos will be returning to the rectangular style of the first and second-gen models with a screen not too different from the Zune's. The iconic click wheel will still be present in the new model, but the screen will have a 1.5:1 aspect ratio, as seen on the iPod touch, as opposed to the 1.33:1 ratio found on the current iPod nanos and the iPod classic.

For those unfamiliar with the Zune, the screen will be vertically oriented, meaning lists will be longer and thinner, and videos will be rotated 90 degrees, so in order to watch a video the device has to be turned on its side. All of this means that the new iPod nano will, in fact, be larger than the previous model in exchange for a bigger screen. There's no denying that an iPod refresh is definitely on the way, but when remains to be seen. Rumors suggest that the new iPods will be revealed later this year.

Yea, and Apple fans bitch about MS stealing ideas from them...

To the arrogant Apple Fanbois: READ THAT.

OMG Apple taking something from MS !!!
ok, I can die happy now I have seen them all

Never like the latest Nano, too small and wide.

It will be interesting to see what the Zune team does, touch screen or more of the same. Smaller and slimmer.
#5 bluewind_89 on 31 Jul 2008 - 15:43
I agree, I like the original nano design and absolutely hate the current design. This will be interesting to see.

Hate to break it to you guys, but, the original iPod Nano came first, then MS copied THAT, then Apple changed to the current "Fatboy" version and has now decided to revert back to the original iPod Nano configuration. The Zune took cues from the first iPod Nano.....not the other way around.

Umm.. dude.. look at the pics of the old nano.. it doesn't look like the Zune at all.. yes it's tall and narrow, but the screen is tiny.. the Zune had the long rectangular screen before the Nano.

I love the current Nano design and hate the old Nano design!

Yeah, because there are just infinite ways a manufacturer can put a screen on something that fits in your hand.

Seriously, grow up.

You could say the same thing about operating systems, GUIs or pretty much anything related to a computer.

Neither of them used circular screens yet. I should patent that right away before it's too late!

The only reason i bought an iPod was the size and screen quality (even while i only view a video or two every now and then) of the Nano 3rd Gen.

I don't think that increasing the size of the player in exchange for a larger screen will help them sell more. For that, there is the iPod Touch, the Zune and other companies products.

Lets keep music players small...

Current nanos are cuuuute.

Ha ha ha, let's look up cool in the dictionary

That's a 'cool' video you have selected right there.

Ah yea, so rectangular screen = Zune like, right. What a load of sensational steaming elephant ****.

Since when is Zune the only player to have a wide aspect vertical screen ?
#16 Chrono951 on 01 Aug 2008 - 00:06
Doesn't "nano" mean small? As far as I can tell, the "nano" keeps getting bigger and bigger and bigger. Maybe they should replace the current iPod classic with the new upcoming nano and make a new "nano" thats actually, well, nano.

One has nothing to do with the other.

Plus, I don't really see Apple taking cues from a failed device.

Next.
#17.1 RAID 0 on 01 Aug 2008 - 01:58
Well, it is second as far as sales go... right? That's not a failure.
#17.2 C_Guy on 01 Aug 2008 - 15:10
Finally, LTD puts 'Apple' and 'failure' in the same sentence.

Apple only takes existing technology, re-brands it, then accuses the original as a "copycat".

NEXT!

He sort of has a point, since only until a month or so ago did Zunes finally start appearing in the Canadian marketplace, which is where us three except RAID 0 (I think) all reside in.

Have they taken off yet? Not quite sure. I have yet to see a random person carry a Zune while commuting; it's either an iPod family product, a MP3 phone, or a small rectangular shaped music player. Even CD players are now a rarity on buses these days.

You're right, I'm in California. A few of my friends have Zunes, granted more people I know have iPods.

Who's the moron who wrote this article? Since when is Apple being "Zune-like" for having a similar screen aspect ratio? If anything, Microsoft copied Apple when they first came out with the zune!

And btw zune is by no means a popular enough device to be considered a standard by which other devices are compared.

A very ignorant statement.

The Zune is second in MP3 player sales! It's sold over 2 million units! It's only main competitor is the iPod, which unfortunately, it isn't winning.
#19 techbeck on 01 Aug 2008 - 14:36
Wow...love all these people who say Zunes are failed devices. Dont you read anything? Damn, think before you post. I dont have a Zune atm and I have a iPod. But I may switch to the Zune later on.

Zunes have different features than the iPod as well. I like the FM tuner...something iPods has always been lacking. Yea, you can get an addon device for the iPod...but it makes them look bulky and like crap. Zune also makes it easy to share/swap files with others.
#20 C_Guy on 01 Aug 2008 - 15:15
I didn't think Microsoft has the exclusive right to the design of a "vertically oriented" screen.

Next week: As with Leopard, Apple will accuse Microsoft of stealing "their" vertical-oriented "Zune-like" screen to stir up their cult-like followers. As usual, Microsoft lets the facts speak for themselves.
