Band Leaks Track to BitTorrent, Blames Pirates

When we reported about the leak of a BuckCherry track last week, and specifically the band’s response to it, we hinted that this could be a covert form of self-promotion. Indeed, after a few days of research we found out that the track wasn’t leaked by pirates, but by Josh Klemme, the manager of the band.

When BuckCherry found out that their latest single had leaked on BitTorrent, they didn’t try to cover this up, or take the file down. No, instead, they issued a press release, where they stated: “Honestly, we hate it when this s*** happens, because we want our FANS to have any new songs first.”

This is strange to say the least. Not only because their label, Atlantic Records, is known to release (and spam) tracks for free on BitTorrent sites, but also because the press release was more about promoting the band than the actual leak. Without any hard evidence, we suggested that this leak may have been set up to get some free promotion and publicity, which BuckCherry seems to need.

Not sure about the PR quote I would imagine that it is the FANS that would download any leaked content first anyway...

I found that comment about the FANS getting it first kind of odd as well.
Who else buy Buck Cherry fans (if any) would download it first anyways?

Indeed. And if non-fans downloaded it, and liked what they heard, then this POS band's fanbase has increased.

If they want cash, go on tour...

I think he was deliberately doing it in a style similar to Slashdot tags, and personally I didn't find his post all that hard to read. Unlike yours.

I demand Josh Klemme's ISP close his account! Where is the f%^$ing RIAA when you need them!!

But seriously... how are we supposed to take RIAA or anti-torrent measures seriously when the bands and labels themselves are releasing their own music there?

..unfortunately the lawyer didnt do anything illegal sharing the file on the web. It is illegal when the material is copyrighted and the copyright holder does not allow it to be shared, it is legal otherwise. Since it looks like this is a 'smart' move of both the lawyer and band together..

Their PR stunt failed. Who are Buckcherry?
#6.1 HalcyonX12 on 01 Aug 2008 - 16:48
They've been around for a long time, like 13 years at least. If they haven't gotten in the public eye by now, they're pretty desperate, so I guess they succeeded more than they did in the past 13 years.

Buchcherry is a rather run-of-the-mill rock band that sings about sex, drugs, and partying. They've had a couple hits like Lit Up and Crazy Bitch, and that's about it.

Did the band's manager not tell the band members he was doing this? Or did he think they'd get away with it? Why else would one of the band blame the leak on pirates? Either way, glad to see they're being called out for their silly PR stunt.

terrible band. awful music.

Again, the industry wants to have it both ways.

I've also never heard of Buckcherry, but they seem like corporate muppets to me! Don't get me wrong, nothing against corporate driven music, per se. But can't stand suits when they pretend to be "Down with the kids!"
#10 TRC on 01 Aug 2008 - 19:06
Never heard of them but they sound like jerks.

An MP3 on the torrents! I am shocked. Shocked, I say.

They are actually OK, once you get past the profanity.
The new track is called "Too Drunk To F&ck"
Hilarious lyrics

And by posting it here, they actually got some merit from their actions. Because now people are reading about this band here on Neowin.
