ABOUT 10,000 Victorian children aged 10 to 14 have been cautioned by police, arrested or ordered to appear in court in the past year, as a surge in youth crime continues.Victoria Police say the escalation in juvenile crimes — ranging from break and enters to drug offences and assaults — is being fuelled by children's growing exposure to sexual and violent images on the internet. While exact figures for the past year are not available yet, police dealt with 9860 criminals in the 10-14 age group in 2006-07 — a rise of 18% on the previous year — and say the situation is getting worse.
The head of the police youth affairs office, Inspector Steve Soden, said too many children were viewing inappropriate content on the internet and this, coupled with boredom due to a lack of community services on Melbourne's fringes, was behind the alarming rise in youth crime.

Nice to know there are alive people out there.
While Australia will stay as part of the Commonwealth and UK will be a US follower then yes, you can blame Bush in a worldwide scale.
Now, what was Australia used for at first????
The USA was NEVER a penal colony, just Australia (sorry my Aussie friends)
The USA was NEVER a penal colony, just Australia (sorry my Aussie friends)
Sorry, but all the colonys in the 3 Americas were in some time linked to penal extradiction to the colonys, every country with colonys in the modern age used this.

hence the nick name pome (pronounced pomy) it stands for Prisoner Of Mother England
Pretend its the Australian version of Fox News.

It's just that I lack information on how that theory is at all founded, or if they just made up the correlation theory out of thin air.
Obviously exposure to violent images and other material can trigger such behavior in mentally unstable people, but those were always very dangerous. Take away the images and maybe video games from them, and they'll instead be triggered by movies or watching a lightly clothed girl in a dark alley. They were always around us, and were always dangerous.
1. they are mental.
2. their parents are crap.
those are usually why these kids are messed up today. not because of movies and games...etc
It seems that they blame kids doing bad things on anything but the parents nowadays.
Am I the only one who read this and thought I was in some sort of freakish time warp to the 19th century?

HAHAHA! You crack me up!
Ban straight marriage!
There was never any crime and violence before the internet, television and video games came along. Why can't you people see that?
That statement kind of needs to be written mate. There has always been crime way before the internet, television and video games came in.
If there was no violence before these, how come the British used Australia as a penal colony?
the way kids are looked at here in the states are disgusting, as if they are going to kill everyone.
I suppose it was society standing behind these kids, like the mob seen on the cellphone commercials, that beat the crap out of another kid at a bus stop, or beat a peer for writing something bad on a blog. Funny, I didn't see the society mob on film.
Just how is "society" to blame when these kids are on their own, unsupervised and yet perform criminal acts?
I believe it is society watching CNN Morning News shaking their heads saying "what the f*ck is wrong with these kids".
more ppl more 'crimes'. Freedom is just an ilusion now. Everything after 2001 seems like is an act of terrorism. Thats exactly what the "highest" power wants. Meanwhile they are installing cameras everywhere, just to control (even more) the human nature.
All in the name of the kids and peace.
Frankly, playing sports and (violent) video games kept me out of trouble when I was a teen. I've never been in a fist fight ever and I've played violent video games for a long time.
The games aren't more violent than they were before. Movies and few TV shows you could question. It won't cause someone to turn violent or to suicide. Heavy metal music was blamed for the same things, same with rap. Didn't happen. Hendrix never inspired people to do drugs since everyone was high back then anyways.
LOL, you don't seriously believe that do you? You and I both know just as well that music definitely influences people. Don't get me wrong, I'm in the exact same boat as you with the whole sports/video games thing, but seriously to say that Hendrix didn't inspire people to try drugs is rediculous. That's like saying Bob Marley never inspired anyone to try marijuana? Ha, yeah. All those frat boys who picked up one of his CD's and just had to get stoned to it. Look at how many white people listened to rap music and started wearing baggy hockey jerseys and jeans with the waist around their knees? There's been studies recently done in Australia that looks at the connection of music and teenagers, and it concluded what most sane intelligent people already knew -- it's the violent kids who are attracted to "violent" music/games/movies/etc. Not the other way around. How someone interprets art is their own choice, based on their own morals and background.
+1 i dont allow my son to access the net without me knowing where what when and who and why i wouldn't blame the net but the stupid parent for giving their child unfeted access to it responsability lies with the adult in the house who pays the bills
