Twitter falls silent in the UK

Twitter has stopped sending SMS updates to UK customers, thus leaving them unaware of the latest important updates on what their friends had for breakfast. Twitter is a service for bloggers who can't string a sentence together and who want to appeal to readers who can't focus beyond a headline. Updates can be sent in over SMS message, limited to 140 characters, and are bounced out to interested parties.

The problem, for Twitter, is that sending SMS messages is an expensive business in Europe, even when they are purchased in bulk, and if an incoming message is bounced out to 10 "friends" then Twitter has to pay to send those ten messages. But while in Europe the sender has to pay the full cost of message delivery, as getting messages is free, in the USA received messages are deducted from the tariff bundle, so Twitter can continue to offer the service there. Back in Blighty, however, it's just too expensive.

Wow, Dan! Has someone got personal issues with Twitter ?

This is fair enough until they can bulk up their advertisment service, and actually generate some income!

That's what the source said, Daniel quoted it.

Surely this will result in the death of twitter in the uk? I don't use it myself but i can imagine that without the texting features it is less appealing....

Is this all over Europe or just UK? If it's all of Europe then it is a much bigger issue... The article doesn't seem to make it clear.

Well I don't use twiter, don't know anybody who does, but I feel sorry for your loss anyway, you people who need text updates on what your friends are doing/not doing.

Gems like those quotes are why I still occasionally read El Reg. They take news items, and add humor/sarcasm and show it in a different light.

Some thin-skinned are offended, but if they can't take a joke...

I'll never use Twitter, unless I become a lazy self-important idiot with no attention span who has lazy bored friends with no attention span.

I find the way text messages are payed for in the US interesting. In the US, whats stopping your phone from being spammed by text messages and you having to pay the bill for it?

Indeed, you have to pay for incoming calls too, iirc.

I don't understand how you are expected to pay for things you didn't expressly accept (SMS), or know the location of the caller.

Yeah I don't get that.

Makes no sense to me how such a system works.

Here in Australia you pay for what you send out.

yeah ive never really understood twitter... facebook allows you to have a 'status' but thats just a tiny part of facebooks functionality whereas its twitters sole function... pointless much?
