T-Mobile will be the first carrier to offer a mobile phone powered by Google’s Android software, according to people briefed on the company’s plans. The phone will be made by HTC, one of the largest makers of mobile phones in the world, and is expected to go on sale in the United States before Christmas, perhaps as early as October.

The high-end phone is expected to match many of the capabilities of Apple’s iPhone and other so-called smartphones that run software from Palm, Research in Motion, Microsoft and Nokia to access the Internet and perform computerlike functions.

The HTC phone, which many gadget sites are calling the “dream,” will have a touch screen, like the iPhone. But the screen also slides out to expose a full five-row keyboard. A video of the phone has been posted recently on YouTube. A person who has seen the HTC device said it matched the one in the video.

*drool* I cant wait to see this thing truly in action, I hope its not as big a blunder as the tilt (which I own) given all the driver issues. The phones HTC makes are great, but sometimes they cut the important corners.. I cant wait to see more on this!

p.s. love my tilt

I love HTC, they make some truly great devices. I just hope they start to make some really fully featured ones in future (i.e. better cameras, radios, etc.).

Doesn't look that great to be honest. Windows Mobile 7 looks better to be honest

Never trust anybody who has to repeat how honest they are being

Windoes Mobile 7 should be great. However, i want to see how well the Android software with a great device performs because the early videos i saw showed that the interface won't be so great. Hopefully, all that will change when it is released.

That sounds like the Touch Pro (Raphael) :errm:

I've seen video of both Android and the "Dream" ... I'll keep my iPhone.

Because low-quality videos of pre-release versions of software are just as good to judge a product by as trying the final out for yourself when it debuts.

Hmm it seems sluggish, thats what I love about the iPhone and touch, the interface sticks to your finger, and follows it everywhere, not a stupid slow delay.

I have always seen google pull out products that are hits, number 1, but this isn't going to work I don't think. iPhone has dominated the phone market for the time being

So, it's not a Google phone, it's an HTC phone. And it's not coming via Google, it's coming via HTC and T-Mobile.

Way to write headlines, guys.

Viewing that video that OS is not yet ready to be released, it seems to be laggy and the interface from the little you can see seems its going to have to be a lot more polished

Apparently battery life is going to be an issue too. It has a huge screen and 3G.
#13.1 QuarterSwede on 16 Aug 2008 - 23:26
As long as it lasts a full day that shouldn't be an issue. If you're going to be away from power for a while then turn 3G, wifi, etc. off.

Exactly, and the brightness of the screen too. A few smart tips can really improve the battery life immensely. I like a lot of the ideas, can't wait to see the final product. I wonder if you'll be able to flash the HTC Niki with it?

Looks like it's interface will be similar to that of the iPhone, hope they pack it with lots of stuff like YouTube and Google Maps, etc.

Is it me or does this phone seem dumb? its like they tried to make a desktop on a phone... I just want my phone to be a phone not an entire computer.... Yes smartphones are good, but this seems like google took the OS a little to far trying to compete with Apple
