Microsoft hints at “private browsing” feature in IE

One of the most interesting feature that didn’t quite make it into the final release of Firefox 3 is “Private Browsing”, a.k.a. porn mode. The only other browser with this feature built-in today is Safari (another reason to try it in case you haven’t), however, Microsoft may also be building a similar feature into Internet Explorer 8 if two trademark filings are any indications.

Although “private browsing” can be easily associated with viewing particular genres of media content, the Mozilla foundation argues “while viewing pornography may be a popular use case due to the nature of content on the Web, assuming that this is the only reason that users need private browsing trivializes the overall feature. For instance, users may wish to begin a private browsing session to research a medical condition, or plan a surprise vacation or birthday party for a loved one.”

If indeed Microsoft is rolling out such a feature in Internet Explorer 8, I can imagine it becoming very popular with surprise birthday planners across the world. Oh those birthday people are in for a treat.

.....some marketing BS! lol

When its released a hack should be made so it can be renamed "Pr0n Mode" or something....

I was thinking that Microsoft employees could browse job offerings at Google without risking chairs being thrown.

Actually that would be a good use. Searching for a job at work can be a problem. Don't want anyone to know you've been on dice all day for the last month.

The proxy would tell all. Do you really think IT departments view each PCs surfing history at the PC itself?

Any new features for IE8 and Windows 7 are welcome from me.

#3.3 Dakkaroth on 20 Aug 2008 - 20:40
Or at least have the option to use a more customizable UI where you can arrange it the way you like it, not having to "get used" to it. That would be very nice.

No, we're not joking. The IE7 GUI is very badly designed. A lot of us hate IE7 just because the GUI is so dam clunky.

The main thing I want to see is the browser having enough brains to remember usernames at least, at sites I have to log into, so that I don't have to re-type it after every re-boot. The simple main reason I don't and won't use IE7, other than the fact that Seamonkey is WAY better!
#7.1 NPGMBR on 20 Aug 2008 - 12:50
Maybe I don't understand your comment but doesn't IE already do that? I know with absolute certainty that IE7 remembers all my user names and passwords.
#7.2 Angel Blue01 on 20 Aug 2008 - 12:57
It doesn't do it very consistently right now, they better fix this!
#7.3 Roger2 on 20 Aug 2008 - 14:58
If you use IE7Pro with IE7, one of the things IE7Pro can do is auto fill in usernames/passwords.
#7.4 NPGMBR on 21 Aug 2008 - 15:11
It works consistently on my PC. Never had a problem with it.

Great, now all those people you see on Dateline who have been Google searching "how to kill my wife and not get caught" have a better chance of not getting caught
#10.1 tsupersonic on 20 Aug 2008 - 14:15
Not really. Google has logs, so investigators would most likely goto google for that kind of info after they search the person's PC.

I hope MS seriously doesn't put this in IE8.

Why not? you can still just not use it or probably turn it off.
And even now you can browse privately, just less confident: Clear all personal data (history, secured connections, etc...)

Points for a humorous read ("porn mode" ha ha ha - so true) but no credibility for idiocy:

"The only other browser with this feature built-in today is Safari (another reason to try it in case you haven’t)". Hhmmm... So when you go into Firefox, turn off the history and set it to clear private data every time you exit, that's not the same? Hhmmm.... Fascinating.

And no, sorry Apple tool, there is nothing Safari can offer a PC user they don't already have. Except needless updates like Mobile Me

Apparently you don't realise istartedsomething is a blog that reports primarily on Microsoft news. I think Long Zheng would be quite humoured by that comment.

Believe it or not, I do use a similar feature in Firefox when gift shopping. It isn't a native feature but done using the Distrust extension.

This is different from simply deleting history, cookies, etc. because the next user can see that everything has been cleaned and may be suspicious. Using Distrust, the next person to sit at the computer sees a browser that appears to have been in normal use, i.e. there is a history trail, back buttons on open browser windows will still work, previous cookies are still there, and so on.

Like virtually any tool, this can be used for good or bad (assuming porn is bad )

You mean the very company that PUT SPYWARE into their browser software would actually remove it? Highly unlikely. Their index.dat file records and stores every website you have ever visited, and its a hidden and locked file, and can only be overwritten/deleted by 3rd party software after a reboot.
#18.1 +Anaron on 25 Aug 2008 - 21:06
/me deletes index.dat
