Bill Gates and Steve Ballmer must be tired of seeing the “I’m a Mac, I’m a PC” ads from Apple that portray PC as a fat, middle aged, balding person. They’ve brought out a big gun to combat this pop culture phenomenon of an ad though: his name is Jerry Seinfeld.

Microsoft really are serious about finally burying the cool Mac guy and the dopey PC guy ads. Hiring Jerry Seinfeld to do their latest commercial is said to have set the Redmond, Washington, based company back a hefty US$300 million the Wall Street Journal reports. Seinfeld will be one of the key personalities involved and will appear next to Bill Gates in the ads.

$300 million for Seinfeld??? They should lay off the crack.
#3.1 Marshalus on 21 Aug 2008 - 13:29
$300 million is the total of their "Vista really doesn't suck" budget... the article is a bit confused I think.
#3.2 IceBreakerG on 21 Aug 2008 - 14:16
Man no kidding. That's alotta cheese for 1 guy. I gotta get famous to the point where like everyone loves me, so I can get crazy contract deals like that too.

According to this source, they are "only" paying Seinfeld $10 million.

And their advertising concept?
The concept behind the Seinfeld ads will be "Windows, Not Walls," which involves "break[ing] down barriers that prevent people and ideas from connecting," according to Microsoft.

Word is, they are looking at another Seinfeld alum to portray Apple.
#5.1 monkey13 on 21 Aug 2008 - 15:48
I thought that as well. Newman was always trying to get one up on Jerry and put him down. I can just see Jerry saying "Mac" instead of "Newman" through gritted teeth.
#6 gunnerhkjp on 21 Aug 2008 - 14:38
Considering how entrenched microsoft is in the world of PC software, they could achieve the same effect by burning $300million in a huge bonfire.

They really must be running out of ways to spend money.

300M is nothing for MS and we all know that. Besides, like someone else said, this is how the famous make a living. Endorsing products and giving speeches.
#7.1 ir0nw0lf on 21 Aug 2008 - 15:28
No one here has said that it wasn't for Microsoft. The point or question is: How much green are they actually paying Seinfeld? Because anything near 300 mil for Seinfeld is pretty ludicrous, he isn't *that* funny.

They should have Elaine go on there talking to Jerry and her playing a game and the Mac guy comes in and asks what's up? And Jerry says we're just playing the latest game and Elaine says get out and shoves mac guy out of the screen. Now that would be gold!

#8.1 lunarworks on 21 Aug 2008 - 19:00
The problem is that for the majority of Windows users, especially adults, "the latest game" would likely be a tepid flash-based casual game, so that argument doesn't hold water.

"Hello... PC, hello... Mac"
#10 winrez on 21 Aug 2008 - 18:31
I am all for the bash the Mac vs PC ads (They make me sick) but didn't Jerry have a Mac sitting on his desk in Seinfeld?

They should have a ad parody of Mac Vs PC where the Server 2008 robot knocks Macs head off
#11 plan-9 on 21 Aug 2008 - 18:44
Pretty odd. Im pretty sure Jerry had a Mac in his apartment on the show. Ahh I see winrez also noticed this.

They should have hired Kramer....oh wait maybe not. Who knows what he'd start calling Mac users.

It's about friggin time MS did SOMETHING to bring their corporate image out of the 1980's...ahem. Good for them.
#13.1 Skyfrog on 21 Aug 2008 - 20:35
True, with Seinfeld they'll be firmly in the early 90's now.
#14 techbeck on 21 Aug 2008 - 20:43
Apple brought this on themselves with their crap tactics in their ads. They pretty much insulted Windows and Microsoft in those ads when Microsoft never had to do it. I am glad Microsoft is fighting back, but hope their ads are tasteful and not low blows like the Apple ads. But hey, in an campaign ad war, Microsoft will win. 300mil is chump change for Microsoft...plenty more where that came from.

#16 plan-9 on 21 Aug 2008 - 22:23

Waste of money. Seinfeld is overated as a comedian.

Do they see mac as a threat or is gates just trying to save face because of the utter failure of his latest os?

The mac vs. pc commercials told many truths but spending 300 million just to get back at them or because they feel mac is now a threat is money wasted and should be put into the development of windows 7.

Mac will never be a threat to the desktop (just like linux ) and Gates and co. do a fine enough of a job embarrassing themselves.

Yea, I guess that 150+ million copies of Vista SOLD is a real failure (input sarcasm here). All the Mac vs PC commercials told was how childish Apple has to get and how low they had to stoop to increase sales. Not to mention they portrayed PC users BADLY not just Microsoft but every one who uses Windows. Look how cool and laid back the Mac guy was while the PC guy looked like a dumbass. Microsoft doesnt have to stoop to Apples levels to do well.

Time to trade my iPod for a Zune....

http://tech.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=08...28&from=rss

"More than one in every three new PCs is downgraded from Windows Vista to Windows XP, either at the factory or by the buyer, said performance and metrics researcher Devil Mountain Software, which operates a community-based testing network. 'The 35% is only an estimate, but it shows a trend within our own user base,' Craig Barth, the company's CTO, said. 'People are taking advantage of Vista's downgrade rights.' Last year, Devil Mountain benchmarked Vista and XP performance using other performance-testing tools and concluded that XP was much faster. Barth said things haven't changed since then. 'Everything I've seen clearly shows me that Vista is an OS that should never have left the barn.'

If you feel my claims are in error then certainly you have had all the opportunity you would ever need to refute them, so why didn't/couldn't you?
#22 Joshie on 22 Aug 2008 - 01:22
This could prove interesting. Obviously Microsoft needs to take a completely different direction than Apple took. Apple's ads have a childish, smug feeling to them with a bunch of back-and-forth talk building up to a punch line. MS ads always struck me as more abstract. It'll be neat to see what their marketing team does with Jerry.

So they're going to have whining, whinging non-funny person to be the representative?

Then who is going to portray Steve Jobs/Mac - the soup Nazi?

A rotten tomato or some other offensive inanimate object would work...
#24 +Ghost96 on 22 Aug 2008 - 02:51
It'll be interesting to see what ideas they come up with. I personally loved the Seinfeld series and thought it was absolutely brilliant. George was my favorite with Jerry coming in at a close second to him. I'm not an MS stockholder so I could care less what they spend for media coverage on a Seinfeld contract.

But yeah, it'll be nice to see some creative comedy that targets those damn mac fanboys............................................"not that there's anything wrong with that!" (Lol, I had to say it)
(3 replies) #25 Airlink on 22 Aug 2008 - 06:15
They should have just hired the Mac Guy and the PC Guy and contacted them to not do anymore ads for Apple. I'm fairly sure 300 million dollars can buy that kind of silence.
