Electronics maker Apple expects to sell 3.5 million iPhones in Russia in the next two years, according to market sources familiar with new deals being struck by Russian carriers. Despite no official availability, up to 600,000 of the popular mobile devices have already flooded into Russia through unauthorized sales; now, at least two carriers have signed an official framework agreement with the manufacturer and one more deal is expected next week.

Sources claim that Mobile TeleSystems (MTS), Russia's largest carrier, has already agreed with Apple to sell iPhones, probably starting in October, and rivals Vimpelcom and MegaFon are in talks with Apple. "Total sales by the Big Three carriers will amount to 3.5 million iPhones within the next two years," said Eldar Murtazin, an analyst with Moscow-based Mobile Research Group, citing sources familiar with the negotiations.

How is this newsworthy?

I guess you've missed the memo: "Everything iPhone/Apple related is newsworthy".
#1.2 jonnytabpni on 23 Aug 2008 - 11:06
Quit your moaning. I was interested to hear it! Just coz your not interested in it doesn't make it not newsworthy. Think about all the junk in the main newspapers these days that we just skim over... :-)
#1.3 Magallanes on 23 Aug 2008 - 12:06
Its newsworthy because :

a ) wooow, Apple can sell millions in Russia, iphone is truly a success, yay for Apple.

or

b ) only to expect 3.5 million of iphone in Russia, is just a tiny percent of the global cellphone market if was Nokia then you can call it a failure.

I think American & Western corporations should not be permitted to do business with Russia, until Rutin Tootin Putin and his commy puppet president are no longer in charge of Russia.

This country is clearly on a path of being a major threat.

100% agree with you. Hippies like the ones in Cupertino have no problem with what Russia is doing now. To them Joseph Stalin was a great guy. Now these morons are saying that Georgia provoked Russia to attack because they moved troops within their own country. Putin is a thug pure and simple.

You do realized that Stalin gave South Ossetia to Georgia, right? So the US supporting Georgia keeping South Ossetia is hypocritical and laughable at best. Not to mention that North Ossetia (part of Russia) and South Ossetia comprise of 90%+ ethnic Ossetians, which are different from Georgians. I agree though, a country has the right to move troops within its borders, just as Serbia did in the province of Kosovo...oh wait, the US was hypocritical there as well.
So to sum it all up, US foreign policy = hypocritical joke.

Don't tar us all with the same brush, please. There's a lot of liberal-minded people in the US & Canada that are opposed to Russian territorial aggression.

Frankly, there's a lot of propaganda flying around and sometimes it's hard to know who to believe, but facts are facts: If you want to blame someone, blame Bush! He tied up so many US forces in Iraq and Afghanistan that even if the US wanted to intervene militarily they couldn't do it because they simply don't have the manpower available.
The Russians knew this, and they knew also that the Europeans wouldn't intervene, so they said to themselves: "Hey, who's going to stop us? Nobody but the Georgians, and we can beat them easy."

Putin put Russia on the track to recovery and growth. Let's lay the talk of unilateral imperialism aside for a moment:

In terms of "territorial aggression", most American conservatives (not to mention neo-cons", have no rights to the argument.

You can have your opinion about Russia, but for now I tend to side with Russia in the face of American hypocrisy.

I'm American and I agree with you 100% there. The US government supports the rights of people in other countries to their independence, but if a large group of people inside the US were to want their own independence (such as the Southern states), they would quickly be treated as criminals.

That's not going to happen.
The thing is Apple's infamous Reality Distortion Field has strucked major Russian carriers. They signed contract to sell those million iPhones, but they have no means to do that. In Russia phones aren't normaly sold by carriers. Of course carriers asked retail stores to help sell the iPhones, but the stores aren't going to sign any contracts. They'll sell according to the demand which is not so high.
My guess is that russian carriers will fail dramatically.

I believe some "experts" (you're likely not one) said in the beginning that the iPhone would flop.

Welcome to what happens when you underestimate Apple. Hence, the news being what it is these days.

My question is: when are YOU getting yours?? I have one and it's pretty sweet, I must say.

I'm not going to get iPhone. For me the $1000+ phone without copy&paste is just ridiculous proof of the RDF.
But the article is not about the flop. It's about iPhone in Russia. I don't underestimate Apple. They managed to fool the major russian carriers.

$1000???

I paid $300 for mine (3G 16gb) with Rogers (Canadian carrier), including the same plan I have now plus a tad more for the 3G data plan, which, for what I get, I really don't mind. And Rogers is known as one of the more expensive carriers. They're the high-end around here. But I get great service with them so I don't really mind the extra outlay.

Perhaps the pricing is the only issue where you are. That might change.

We're talking about Russia and Apple *ding-ding*. Did you read the article?
Carriers are expected to buy the iPhone from Apple for $399 and sell for 24,000 roubles ($990), Murtazin said, well below the price at which the gadget is currently offered by unauthorized dealers

Also we have 3G only in a pair of cities (not even in Moscow).

You continue to comment for the sake of provoking "the other side."

Just as there is no accounting for taste, there's no accounting for opinions.

The iPhone is considered a game-changer. It's the next iPod-like phenomenon. Despite the naysayers' doubts, it has yet again put Apple at the forefront of design and usability. In fact, they never really left the forefront since the advent of the iPod.

You made mention of Vista, there was really no need to do so. But the door is open, right?

Vista, in comparison to the iPhone as a desirable, interesting, inspiring, exciting, well-designed product, is wholly anticlimactic. It has done nothing for Microsoft's image, and at best, has been another OS that sells well (XP, coincidentally(?) isn't exactly being shelved), because years of licensing has resulted in, well, more years of licensing. Welcome to the biggest technology cash-cow of our time. Too bad it's resulted in galactic laziness and mismanagement. But the money is there, right? Except not for the reasons you'd assume.

The iPhone represents something different and desirable. Thus newsworthy. If you can't acknowledge this, I'm glad you're not running my business. Maybe you're not easily impressed, and no product really gets you interested or excited anyway. They just exist, and just "are." Does that mean you have no imagination?

Cheers.

But a flop in Poland and India

3G was out in June 2008, IIRC. Are we already in June 2009?

But I guess you're simply stating a fact that is valid as of 2 months later and aren't crystal-ball gazing.

Apart from LTD making sense the rest of the comments made in this thread surmount to nothing more than the immature garbage spewed by pathetic tossers who have nothing better to do with their time than troll forums.

Can't you naysayers get it through to your thick skulls that Apple have not only changed the mobile telecommunications market forever with their iPhone but are also doing very well in terms of their projected market share.

Peace and craic.
