Windows Live Hotmail Wave 3 will be launched shortly. Whats new !?

Faster than ever. It'll be up to 70 percent faster to sign in and see your e-mail. Of course, along with more speed, you'll get powerful technology that deflects spam and helps protect you against viruses and scams.
Simpler, cleaner design. We're combining the classic and full versions of Hotmail, so you get access to everything Hotmail has to offer. The reading pane will let you check out your e-mail without having to open it up.

Put more you in your e-mail. New themes and colors will let you design the look of your inbox, so your personality can really shine through.

Closer to your contacts. Just start typing in the "To" line and you'll get a choice of e-mail contacts that most closely match what you've typed. Plus, it'll be even easier to e-mail groups of people.

Sounds like Gmail without the pop access! Honestly, who still uses hotmail?
#1.1 some_guy on 27 Aug 2008 - 23:35
exactly... give us free pop/imap and we'll talk
#1.2 JoDaddy on 28 Aug 2008 - 01:33
It does. I use WLM Desktop, and it's free. It's also free with the newest (still beta) Outlook connector.

Yes, but I'd rather use my own client that I've already configured for everything else.

Me. Since about 1997.

Well anyone who comprehends privacy. Google doesn't really need to know what's in my mail just to serve up "enhancements" (aka advertising)

Can I has Firefox compatability?
#2.1 noPCtoday on 28 Aug 2008 - 01:18
what are you talking about? I've been using Hotmail on Fx since the old hotmail days. The only time Fx wasn't supported is when Fx3 just came out, you couldn't use the full version of Hotmail with fancy ajax stuff. Now the full version also works on Fx3.

It wasn't working properly in Firefox 2 for a while there if I remember correctly.
#2.3 C_Guy on 28 Aug 2008 - 17:28
No but that's because you're using past-tense to ask for something in the present. Try re-structuring your sentence.

No it is not fully compatible. The Windows Live Messenger presence is not in WLHotmail in Firefox & you cannot resize the 'folders' column. You also cannot use the drop-down to move emails to other filders by just using the mouse on the scrollbar.

There are many issues with Windows Live Hotmail currently in both Firefox 2 & Firefox 3.

When Firefox 3.0 was released, the newer flashy version of Windows Live Hotmail where you can drag and drop messages around didnt work, and users of that browser were forced to use "Classic" mode... That issue is now fixed though.

Hotmail works just fine and I have no problem saying I still use it. It also works fine with Outlook via the Connector or via Windows Live Mail.

As for Firefox, MS has been pretty good about making Hotmail work properly in there now. I use Hotmail all day long at work in Firefox, I would expect this new version to work right away or within a few days.

Yup. This new Hotmail UI does work great in Firefox versions 2.0.0.18 and 3.0.4. However, it does not work correctly in the Firefox 3.1 alphas & betas that I've tested. Firefox 3.1 hangs after logging into my Hotmail account. Read these google forum threads about firefox 3.1 beta & hotmail:

I use hotmail as my main email address, so I look forward to the update, but, Jesus, who writes this caca?

"New themes and colors will let you design the look of your inbox, so your personality can really shine through."

What age group are they attempting to appeal to, I wonder?
#5.1 Jebadiah on 28 Aug 2008 - 04:12
Kids, college students, girls and other people who like to feel "cool".

Wave 3 or strike 3?

There was a small angled preview shot on Liveside.net and it looked really nice.

I just want POP Access! Please, Microsoft! Please! I would happily pay for the Premium at the moment but there's no way for New Zealanders to get it :|

Windows Live Hotmail Wave 3? Who comes up with these names?
Seriously, why don't they just call it Hotmail? Everybody else does.
#9.1 evok_ on 28 Aug 2008 - 14:04
Its not called Hotmail Wave 3. The "wave" has to do with an update to numerous Live services at once. The title of the article is misleading, I know. It should be "Next version of Hotmail" or whatever, or just remove "Hotmail" from the title.

what hotmail needs to do is get rid of the advertisements like gmail has and allow free pop/imap access like gmail does instead of charging you for it.they already make enough money, give those hotmail users a break.
#10.1 +acxz on 28 Aug 2008 - 07:45
Huh? The adverts are still there in Gmail. Granted, they're a lot less noticeable than they are in Hotmail but they still exist.
#11 dewaaz on 28 Aug 2008 - 06:59
Hopefully their spam filters will actually work this time FFS
#12 Cpugeni Ω on 28 Aug 2008 - 08:17
dewaaz - maybe you need to set your spam filter settings at a higher level? I use my hotmail address for website signups, forums, internet orders, etc; where I believe my address is most likely to be sold on, and the level of spam I recieve in my inbox is zero - I've had my account since 1998 as well.

I liked hotmail and even the new live messenger, but now I have so much spam that the 250 MAXIMUM black listed email adress is REALLY ****ing me off.

on top of that, hotmail has because very slow on my outlook (both 2003 & 2007) at such a point where it hangs there 3-6secs each time I want to check my new mails.

I'm thinking about swiching to Gmail, and that's bad for microsoft.

Why did I say all this? Because microsoft is once again focusing on unimportant details instead of the core, main, problem of its solution. On our email, spams and proper rules are the priority and microsoft limits both at such a point it quickly becomes unusable for any advanced user.

This was crux of the biscuit when I stopped using hotmail and switched to Gmail (keeping a resident email client handy). Now I only use Gmail for commercial email which is then routed to the resident client, and the resident client for personal mail. To make the package complete I use Mailwasher to cleanse both before downloading anything. Works for me.

Gmail gets tons of spam, but at least they have a filter which works fairly well. Hotmail on the other hand seems to have none.
