Mozilla steps up Firefox 3 push

Mozilla is stepping up its efforts to drive users to Firefox 3. The company has begun a campaign which offers Firefox 2 users the option of an upgrade to the new browser upon launching. The pop-up window provides a short list of the improvements in the latest version of the browser and offers users the option of updating immediately, sending another reminder later, or never asking the user to update again.

Because Firefox lacks the type of automatic standalone update utility employed by Apple and Microsoft for updating Safari and Internet Explorer, Mozilla relies on alert messages within the browser to update users when a new version of Firefox is available. The new components of the browser, most notably the built-in antimalware tools, require the company to issue a new end-user license agreement, unlike most Firefox updates.

the way i see it is Firefox 2 is just plain worse than FF3 it's almost stupid to not use FF3 over FF2 as there's basically nothing about FF2 that's better than FF3.

Although I personally love it some people really don't seem to like the awesome bar. Also my colleague refuses to upgrade since as of v3 middle clicking on a folder of bookmarks on the bookmark toolbar will append the tabs to existing open tabs rather then clear the existing tabs. As far as Im aware there's no way to fix either of these things. Current extensions that supposedly remove the awesome bar actually just change its appearance and the middle clicking issue just doesn't seem to be a problem that anyone else views as a problem.

For me, the differences between 2 and three are cosmetic. Both hog memory like it's going out of style.

Does Ad Block work with FF popups?

How times change! I remember waiting for FF1.5 to receive an automatic upgrade to 2.0 ... and waiting ... and waiting. I gave up in the end and installed it manually, but I understand the upgrade didn't get pushed out until more than a year after 2.0's initial release.

1.5-->2.0 update path was turned on ~8 months after 2.0's initial release. Fx 1.5 didn't have a major-update ability when it was first released, so all that had to be engineered and put in. But now it's proven to work, the 2.0-->3.0 path could be turned on sooner rather than later.

I would update to FF 3 myself, but the last time I did, all I had were crashes. I'm not updating until they stop supporting FF 2.

Check your extensions and try a clean install? ...duh

I did that. Twice. 2nd time was a complete removal of anything Mozilla or Firefox related. Still crashed.

You probably have some piece of malware that's narfing up your system. Check it with SpyBot S&D and then try again.

You should try again. All Spybot found was tracking cookies. I make sure nothing gets on my system without my permission. And don't say it's my computer that's causing the issue.

Well, something's wrong, and the vast majority of users have had no such issues when they go to install FF3.
So, yeah: I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say that it's an issue on your end.
Have a nice day.
