With online gaming being as competitive as it is these days, you will no doubt want to take advantage of every opportunity available (short of cheating) to gain an edge over your online foes. Today we are taking a look at five gaming mice that aim to do just that.

Considering it would be nearly impossible to cover all options we have gone with the usual suspects which usually carry the best ergonomics and sensor technology available at any given time.

Meet the cream of the crop: from Logitech, the G5 and G9 mice. Microsoft is represented by the Sidewinder and Habu mice, while Razer rounds out the group with the Lachesis gaming mouse.

+1. Got one recently and it's great.

Edit: Not sure how they can say it is small... it's huge compared to my previous Microsoft PS/2 Wheelmouse

Yeah I got the G5 (gen 1), and love it.

I may get the gen 2 because of the rubberize grip to it..

Razer Lachesis ftw. :p

They're all so ugly. Well the Microsoft one looks ok, but I like Logitech myself though. My MX500 is still working great.

You're supposed to get a headshot with it, not make love to it.

Ach... So that's where I've been going wrong!

Also, my vote goes for the £10 Logitech RX1000 laser mouse...

Logitech MX518 - not reviewed but cheaper and as good as the G5 IMO.

+1. Got one about a year and a half ago, and I love it.
#4.2 virtorio on 03 Sep 2008 - 11:17
I love my MX518.

The MX518 is awesome! I have been using that (or the MX510) for probably the last 4-ish years and have yet to be disappointed. Pair that (or just about any other Logitech device that uses SetPoint drivers) up with uberOptions, and you can't go wrong!

I prefer the MX Revolution, have had it for a while now and think its probably the best mouse I ever used.

Agreed, I've owned a Razer and a G5 in the past - I'd NEVER consider a cable mouse ever again since upgrading to the VX and MX mouse from logitech.

I'm using the logitech VX (smaller version of the MX), I can't find a mouse better for my work & gaming needs.

I owned a revolution but really didnt get on with the scroll wheel. I liked the smart scroll at first but middle clicking is super clunky and the software is rubbish.
#5.3 IamZed on 03 Sep 2008 - 23:11
MX is great. The middle click is unusable for anything but wheel mode change, but other than that it's perfect. With the Uberoptions software it can do anything I can think of.
#6 zape on 03 Sep 2008 - 11:10
The G5 destroys any other (wired) mouse out there. Period.

I just bought Razer DeathAdder a couple of week ago
#7.1 PsyOpWarlord on 03 Sep 2008 - 17:23
Same here. I'd had the Habu before but I had to return it to a button defect. When I got the DeathAdder it reminded me of nice fit and feel of that design.

Ive always bought Logitech mice and loved them. MX518, MX revolution, MX1000. But I recently bought a Razer DeathAdder and absolutely love it. Theres no silly buttons all over the place that you'll never use, just the basics in the right place (as long as your right handed.) The software is not bloated and unreliable (Logitech looking at you!)The Infrared sensor is in a league of its own as well. And they release fireware updates to resolve any known issues. My next mouse will definitely be another Razer.

The mouse that's shaped most like a regular mouse wins. This is news?
#10 este on 03 Sep 2008 - 12:36

#13 +Sethos on 03 Sep 2008 - 13:28
I prefer my DeathAdder over my G5 Gen1 AND 2
#14 m4ttx on 03 Sep 2008 - 14:32
i was a huge logitech fan until i tried the new deathadder out. i loved it. but logitech is still one of the best.
#15 eXtermia on 03 Sep 2008 - 14:44
I have the G-5 I had the MS 6000, tried Razors and decided to pick the Habu (razor designed mouse anyway) because it felt the most comfortable in my hand...

I got the razor metal mouse pad ,dual sided control and speed .. love it
#16 C_Guy on 03 Sep 2008 - 14:59
As mentioned, how about Microsoft Habu which was designed in partnership with Razer? Glad to see Logitech is trying but they haven't done anything revolutionary since their force feedback mouse which is now long dead.

(Microsoft + Razer keyboard and mouse) + Razer mousepad = Gamer's paradise.

Been using a razer copperhead for a few years now, works nice
#18 2Cold Scorpio on 03 Sep 2008 - 16:31
I love my Logitech G5 (2007 Black/Blue version). Best mouse I ever had.
(1 reply) #19 Sinster on 03 Sep 2008 - 18:57
Best mouse for me is the MX1000 (10 buttons)... the button layout is superior to the G5 or the G7. Even the MX518 button layout is better than the G5. The G5 second edition is close to what I would call a good button layout.
#19.1 Airlink on 03 Sep 2008 - 22:59
MX Revolution has 11 buttons + the "Hyper-Fast" scroll wheel. Count 'em: Five on the thumb, standard left-click & right-click, tilt-wheel, and "middle button" under the wheel (you depress the wheel to click the middle button) and a little extra button in front of the wheel.

The thumb buttons are arranged with a rocker/push switch (2-way togle that also depresses) cleverly disguised as a wheel, below a pair of "forward" and "back" buttons. All buttons are programmable, naturally.

What really sets the MX Revolution the stand-out, though, is that you can set profiles for each app, game, folder, or document you want. So, you can set the thumb wheel to peek left/crouch/peek right in GRAW2 while in Supreme Commander it's set to Spin Map Left/Reset Map/Spin Map Right. You launch a game or app or whatever, and once you're in it your buttons are programmed as you set them in the profile. Plus, you can set the wheel to free-spin or ratchet-spin, or to smart-switch between those to spin modes depending on how much force you spin the wheel with!!

Best of all, the whole thing is a sealed-unit wireless mouse with a lazer for a sensor and a litium-ion battery pack for power. No more buying batteries or messing with cords.

The concludes me "glowing review mode" here on Neowin.net. Stay tuned for the next person, when you will hear the next person say:
