iTunes 8, iPhone 2.1, 4th gen Nano expected Tuesday

The Apple world is buzzing about what is coming down the pipe this Tuesday. Expected to be launched or announced in a couple days at their Let's Rock event at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts Theater in San Francisco on September 9 at 10:00 a.m. are:
  • iTunes 8
Kevin Rose has been Twittering and blogging this week about new visualization features being added, but in addition, Apple is expected to add a "Genius" feature which automatically builds playlists from songs in your library that have similar features, like a Pandora for music you already own. Of course, Genius also includes recommends music you don't already have and lets you purchase it from the iTunes store, via a handy sidebar. Also expected to be added are HD movie downloads, and a new Grid view that is speculated to be similar to the view used by the Zune desktop software.
  • iPhone 2.1
Doesn't it seem like only a couple of months ago we were excited about 2.0? Well, Apple is already set to release a significant upgrade. The most talked about feature expected to be included is a Push API, which will allow developers of third party applications to deliver updates to the iPhone without the user actually being in the application. This is expected to be a huge boost to IM software on the platform, as well as numerous other applications. Apple is also including additional features that were not even released to developers, which as of yet no one seems to know what that will be. One can always hope for copy & paste.
  • 4th Generation iPod Nano
Are you a big fan of the fatty Nano? Well, you better hurry up and get yours quick because it's expected to be replaced with a taller, more slimmed down version (think Zune 4/8) that you'll turn on horizontal to view video content on. Engadget has a "spy" photo.
Of course, with Apple, all of this is speculation and in the end it could just be a giant ploy to have a party to take attention away from the upcoming "its not a laser" mouse product from Microsoft.

I'm definitely looking forward to this! It seems like we have been on Itunes 7 forever. I might have to upgrade my 1st gen nano to the 4th lol

They seriously better fix the performance issues on the iPhone 3G.

Hopefully they'll boost iTunes performance on Windows. Version 7 is so slow and buggy

I agree, my fear though is the added features will just make it worse.

iTunes 7 is terrible. It's incredibly buggy (crashes on exit, black-interface Vista bug) and terribly slow. Hopefully iTunes 8 will buck that trend but I very much doubt it.

iTunes is only ever "improved" when there are new products for Apple to sell (read: more useless crap gets added) - the core functionality continue to degrade, to the point where I find it too much hassle to load it up when I want to play some music.

Indeed. Hopefully someone will crack the iPod Touch v2/iPhone 3G database hash so I can finally obliterate this piece of crap from my computer.

At least they fixed the x64 burning issue.

And I thought I was the only one whoo noticed this!!

Wouldn't use Itunes myself in a million years, but I sure have blown it off a lot of systems!!

I agree. I wouldn't even care, except for the new iPod classic doesn't work well with anything but iTunes. Had I known that ahead of time I would have never purchased one.
#4.7 theyarecomingforyou on 08 Sep 2008 - 16:55
I have an iPod Classic so I accepted I was going to have to use iTunes, though I really wasn't expecting it to get progressively worse with each release - generally it's the opposite that happens. It just doesn't feel like a Windows application; resizing the window is incredibly slow, as is pretty much everything (apart from searching, ironically).

a new nano!? that annoys me a bit as i'm happy with my current 3rd gen... dont want to have to upgrade but i must have the latest! lol. wonder what the size comparison is to a full size ipod..
#5.1 C_Guy on 08 Sep 2008 - 00:03
"dont want to have to upgrade but i must have the latest"

You couldn't have demonstrated Apple's exact target market more perfectly.

Features? Who cares
Appearance? Who cares
Price? Who cares
Necessary? Who cares
Newer version from Apple? OMFG LOLZ HERE'S MY PARENT"S CREDIT CARD, STEVE!!!!! RUSH DELIVERY PLEASE! LOLZ! I AM SO FTW!!

No wonder slightly newer versions of everything Apple make Neowin's front page.
#5.2 Skyfrog on 08 Sep 2008 - 02:02
Right, because newer versions of Microsoft's or any other popular programs are never on the front page.

I thought I had read something about there being much larger hard drive based versions coming out, but then I couldn't really find anything when I was writing this. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.
#7.2 VWW on 08 Sep 2008 - 02:25
Yeah i'm interested in this as well. All the attention seems to be on the new nano and the upgraded Touch.... but i wanna know what changes are in store for the Classic. Anyone??
#7.3 Galley on 08 Sep 2008 - 14:18
Haven't you heard? The iPod classic is dead (or at the very least will see no more revisions).

Just bought a new 3G iPod Nano last week to replace my 2G Nano. I saw an article on Endgadget last week which had some 'spy' photos and didn't really like the look of it so decided to buy a 3G one before they stop selling them.

I love it and i've never had an iPod with the signature steel back so its a novelty for me
#8.1 Magallanes on 08 Sep 2008 - 11:11
The problem with ipod nano 3g is itunes, otherwise is perfect.
#8.2 bbfc_uk on 08 Sep 2008 - 19:51
I don't find iTunes that bad. Yeah its a bit buggy and the Vista Black Out bug is the most annoying, but apart from that I find the way the iPod and iTunes integrate is seemless.
(1 reply) #9 virtorio on 07 Sep 2008 - 21:34
More features to make iTunes ever slower and more unreliable on Windows. Awesome.
#9.1 Glendi on 07 Sep 2008 - 22:49
I'm not surprised, it's by Apple... ON Windows.
#10 bob_c_b on 07 Sep 2008 - 21:56
I love my iPod touch, but the upcharges for firmware, the rubbish that is iTunes for Windows and the sneaking of Bonjour and MobileMe into the installer have me thinking about alternatives. More bloat is not keeping me interested.
(2 replies) #11 needlegun on 07 Sep 2008 - 22:06
...and at long last iTunes gains a 'Watch folders' feature as Apple finally realizes that people purchase music at places other than the iTunes store.

Oh sorry... I was dreaming!
#11.1 Code.Red on 08 Sep 2008 - 05:01
Wow, you had me there. I thought I had missed something in the news post. Damn you :p
#11.2 ajua on 08 Sep 2008 - 07:09
and gains the ability to automatically delete songs that no longer exist from your library...!
and they are releasing iTunes without QuickTime, MobileMe and software updater...!

Dreaming is free, isn't it?

the thing i hate the most about iTunes is that with every new version they mess with the database formats and versioning, so windows applications that can sync iPods must update their software just to support the new database.

I think they will loose iPod Nano clients with their new design. i really love the size and form of the 3rd Gen.
#12 sin-ergy on 07 Sep 2008 - 22:18
copy and paste ftw!!!!!!!

I would also love to see MULTITASKING... why this isn't allowed on the iphone is beyond me.
#13 Lasker on 07 Sep 2008 - 23:34
Does anyone know if 10.5.5 is also expected on Tuesday?
#14 Kushan on 08 Sep 2008 - 00:29
That new nano is a couple of buttons short of being a Creative Zen in a fancy case.
#15 Cask1 on 08 Sep 2008 - 00:59
Hope they fix first the shortcoming on the iphone 2.0 firmware before adding anything new. My iPhone 3g performs reaaaaally bad.
#16 +BeLGaRaTh on 08 Sep 2008 - 01:01
So will this mean QuickTime will be updated to version 8 too? I ask as the major version numbers for both generally increase together.

I also wonder what other software they will try to sneak onto our computers this time around.
(1 reply) #17 +majortom1981 on 08 Sep 2008 - 01:35
The thing i hatre is that all apple fans bash the zune but i bet they are all going to love the new nano. The new nano is so far looking just like a zune 4 gig . on the zunes you even turn the zune horizontally to view content.
#17.1 Lare2 on 08 Sep 2008 - 08:23
I bet they'll do. But is that a surprise, of course not.
#18 instant.human on 08 Sep 2008 - 01:47
gotta love sitting in front of the life feed again. =)

i heard there will be live video streaming this time. can anyone kinda confirm that? =)

hopefully they fix the random app crashes in 2.0.2... cant use mail anymore...
#19 AndyD on 08 Sep 2008 - 02:24
Forget about performance. I just want better reception or better handling of switching of networks. My phone dropped over 5 calls today. It's irritating.

I don't understand how anyone would feasibly need to carry 40GB of music around with them, not to mention 160GB... I simply don't see the practicality. If you want to use an iPod as an external hard drive... get an external hard drive. It's a pile cheaper, and probably a lot faster.

I think the number is 40,000 songs on a 160GB iPod Classic? Even with movies... that hard drive is more than enough.

too right lol, carrying a/several weeks worth of music is a bit odd.

#20.4 plastikaa on 08 Sep 2008 - 07:29

You don't need 40GB of music (unless you didnt have access to your computer for a long time if you were traveling or something)... but it is very conveinient in every circumstance, being able to choose what you want when you want without the hassle of preselecting all the music you want to listen to before hand all the time and having to update your mp3 player... also remember it plays videos too, if you have a series of a tv program on one it can soon rack up space.

Like you also mention its nice to have the space to carry around large files too... sure you can buy an mp3 player and a hard drive.. but who wants the hassle of carrying around both? Its partyle the same reason some people don't want to carry around another phone that is far cheaper than the iPhone and an mp3 player... I hate having all sorts of stuff to carry around.
#20.5 +Smigit on 08 Sep 2008 - 09:55
a) If you have your entire collection you can listen to any of it at any time without the need to do a resync
b) You save time and effort of having to sort through literally thousands or tens of thousands of songs to build up playlist. If you later want something else you have to manually chop and change tracks.

Of course noone on any given day needs 160GB of music, but it's convinient. Also for those that make use of video on the iPod storage is also important.

Edit: Recently I lost my pc copy of my music because a hard disk failed and at the time the system was only a few weeks old and I was literally a day or two out from setting up my redundancy server to handle backups (due to other commitments I hadn't had time to do it up intil that point). Because I had my entire collection I could use a 3rd party program to re import my entire collection which was in essence backed up to the iPod. Had I only had a fraction of my music on the device I would have been forced to re-rip maybe 300+ albums.

Praying for a new iPod touch. Schematics I've seen, (whether they're real or not is a different matter), show it will have volume buttons on the side and a rounded back like the iPhone 3G.

WOW! more bloat!
Seems to me this version won't only slow down your system, but totally kill it! nice
Itunes is such a great piece of software... I would say it is very resource oriented....
