Jobs Introduces New Nano, Renewed NBC Deal

Despite reports earlier this month which suggested otherwise, Apple Chief Executive Steve Jobs appeared during the highly anticipated "Let's Rock" presentation today, thin but jaunty, where he introduced new iPod nano and Touch music players. The thinner 8GB iPod nano, hailed as the thinnest iPod ever made, will go for $149, and includes a new "shake to shuffle" feature to change song play. The company also announced that that television broadcaster NBC had rejoined online video and music store iTunes.

"I would call it a series of both expected and unexpected announcements. Clearly the new iPod nano in the flesh is certainly more appealing than it's been. It was expected but I think it will sell well in the holiday season," said Michael Abramsky, analyst with RBC Capital Markets. "NBC is important content for Apple to have on iTunes, especially with the direction it's taking, which is for iPods to handle more video. Having robust iTunes video is key to their success," said Shannon Cross, analyst with Cross Research.

Yeah love how they ripped off Zune went back to the old style.

Shake to shuffle? What if you go running an clip it to an armband?
It's pointless, the interface is just about as close to perfection as you can get. (However, building a playlist on the fly would be good.)
Anything else is added bloat.

You not the only one to think so, Apple stock crashing 4.5% down (yes almost everything going down but MS going up slightly)
#3.2 eAi on 10 Sep 2008 - 02:47
You've been able to make playlists on the fly for years. Maybe since the first iPods? At least since the 2G nano anyway...

Shake to shuffle only works when the iPod isn't on hold and the screen is active. I imagine you can disable it entirely somewhere in the settings.

I tried the shake to shuffle with other gadget and it's annoying and you looks like a idiot doing it. So this feature can be amusing for a couple of days only. Other things is to use the accelerometer to adjust the landscape orientation.

I'm not too keen on the new nano. Bought a new 3G Nano last week to replace my 2G one and I love it. The screen on the new one is roughly the same size as the last one when on its side its just not as fat, though the new UI is very sleek, only wish they would update the firmware on the 3G one to include some of the new features, like Genius and the new Middle Button menu.
#4.1 Swordnyx on 10 Sep 2008 - 14:48
Why? Those are possibly some of the most useless features.

I'm not liking these nanos at all. I love my 3G nano and see no reason to buy another one. I do like how it shows fullscreen album art, but other than that, meh. Maybe they'll update the firmware on the 3Gs.

I think your 3rd gen is probably the worst design. I like the new one and the 2nd gen (which I own) the best. Good luck on firmware updates... They haven't released one for 2nd gen in 2+ years...

I'd have to agree with you on that one. There will be another ipod nano model if a few months. Apple's target market is clearly the "oh, you're still stuck on last years [fashion, sports car, nano]?" snobs.

Well, theres normally one a year...

iTunes 8 is sweet!

A few things I noticed:
Browsing in the grid view by Artist is actually using the Album Artist field. No more separate entries for tracks with guest artists!
Browsing by Album by Title now separates similarly-titled albums such as “Greatest Hits”. WooHoo!
#8.1 excalpius on 09 Sep 2008 - 22:29
What's with the seemingly retahded "Genius" feature? All I get is a list of songs to buy in the sidebar (songs I already own btw! and it seems to take control of your playlist/current song playing in a way that appears to be impossible to break out of/reset?!
#8.2 McoreD on 09 Sep 2008 - 23:29
Well...

They got rid of the Detailed View which was using Album Artist field already...

The Browser (Ctrl+B) still has the same frigging "Genre | Artist | Album" view... are they frigging deaf? It should be "Genre | AlbumArtist | Album" so you won't get this problem where the Track Artists are scattered all over, for the same album:

#8.3 excalpius on 10 Sep 2008 - 00:39
Yeah, I had to re-add the Album Artist column too, and reset my preferences. It killed my library entirely under Vista 64 but under Vista 32 it didn't. Weird stuff with iTunes 8 to be sure...

4:

iPod Shuffle - for cheap people
iPod Nano - for most people
iPod Classic - for people who need to have everything with them
iPod Touch - for rich people

Plus the iPhone
#11.2 Magallanes on 10 Sep 2008 - 14:36
Ipod shuffle ... just get a cheap mp3 pendrive, even the most lousy models came with a led.
Ipod nano ... i love the nano 3g mainly because the size. Currently for the nano 3g there are not alternative.
Ipod classic.... im not sure why people will buy it.
Ipod touch... fine but it is not pocket friendly.

I didn't think it could happen. iTunes 7 was using roughly 400 MB of ram for my music library 40,000+ mp3s. iTunes 8 is now using over 800 MB.
#12.1 JamesWeb on 10 Sep 2008 - 01:06
You could stop using it, just a suggestion.
#12.2 knightracer on 10 Sep 2008 - 06:01
I only use to download album art (iTunes has the highest quality scans available).

They have essentially halved the price...

I'm very disappointed they didn't update the iPod classics to be exactly the same as the nano (only bigger & just silver & black). Especially with the new UI but also with the hardware design... they've kept them almost EXACTLY the same as before. VERY inconsistent!

I also think they could have added lyrics to the iPod touch - a feature that's been missing since it came out but is on the nanos & classics!

Other than that a 64GB touch would have been nice, but I may be able to live with a 32GB one.

iTunes could have done with an updated UI, it is ugly on Windows Vista.

I have not been able to test the performance of the new iTunes on my machine yet as I have only just really installed it, but I really hope it isn't even HALF as bloaty as iTunes 7.7 was & works faster!
#14.1 excalpius on 10 Sep 2008 - 00:41
For some reason iTunes 8 is MUCH slower interface wise on all my machines...still testing it, but I can barely control it effectively. This is performing like iTunes 4 or 5.

Ahh, I haven't had that yet on my Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit laptop with 1GB RAM. So far it's been very good & it doesn't seem to have that black interface bug when starting up

Don't both the iPod touch and iPhone support displaying lyrics? When you play a song you tap the screen it displays the time of the song and under that the lyrics if you played them in the song in iTunes.

Ooooo thank you for that info, I didn't know that & I've never found it out. I don't own one, we just sell them at M&S where I work, on the technology department. I put all my music from home on it so I know some songs have lyrics, so I will try what you suggested Thanks.

+1.

Only the hardware inside will melt. So it's no big deal. When it gets destroyed, you have the material safe in a cool aluminum case.

The iPod Classic firmware is still at version 1.1.2. I thought the genius feature was supposed to be added on plus some other small tweaks for iTunes 8 support.

Yes. I got caught out first time and installed by mistake (promptly uninstalled afterwards). Since then each update requires me to untick Safari when a new iTunes version is released.

I want to install iTunes just for the radio stations, but it really seems like it's not worth the head aches.
