In a bid to challenge Apple's dominant iTunes music service, electronics retalier Best Buy plans to buy digital music service Napster for $121 million in cash. Best Buy announced on Monday it would pay $2.65 per Napster share, nearly double its closing price on Friday; the proposed acquisition includes Napster's approximately 700,000 subscribers, its Web-based customer service and mobile capabilities. However, don't expect too many changes: Napster will retain its name, along with all of its upper management, 140 employees, and headquarters based in Los Angeles.

Both companies offer digital subscription services, but neither have made much of a dent in Apple, which holds more than 70% of the U.S. digital music market. "This is a very natural and appropriate time for Napster to lever up our position in the industry with a strategic bear hug from such a powerful partner," Napster Chief Executive Chris Gorog told Reuters in an interview.

Wasting money, hrmmmm... Geek Squad anyone?

I should clarify that. Geek Squad is a waste of the consumer's money. I'm sure it's more than worth it for Best Buy to charge clueless users a huge premium and then pay some high school kid to do the work.

Yea, and isn't this the 2nd time that "Napster" has been sold for some huge amount of cash...

Wow, someone actually bought Napster again? You'd think Best Buy would have learned their lesson from that whole Divx thing but I guess not.

Could you elaborate more on the DivX and Best Buy? I must have slept through something...
I could not believe Napster is still on the market. I think it's just the name that is being bought and sold. Or was it the users that is being bought?

DIVX (digital video express) was a short lived competitor to DVD where instead of buying movies you rented disposable discs and paid to unlock each time you wanted to view, and threw them away when you were finished. They required DIVX players which were connected to a phone line; needless to say it was a huge flop and I think they lost a fortune. It was actually Circuit City that backed it however so I was mistaken about that part. Also this was before the DivX codec came out and isn't related to it in any way.

$121 million for not even a million subscribers really doesn't seem worth it...

Napster? What is this, 2000?

<sarcasm>...Napster is still around? Wow...</sarcasm> Seriously, this seems a waste of money, considering how small their user base is compared to other brands like Amazon or iTunes... ^_^

IDK. This sort of makes sense. Best Buy has a partner with Rhapsody ATM for their Best Buy Digital Music Store. Purchasing napster puts them in control of their own service allowing more options for their customers. I don't think this is really meant to be a threat against Amazon or iTunes, but more to give them more personal growth options. With Music CD's becoming more and more obsolete, this will put them in a better light for future endeavors.

Might as well buy the Pirate Bay next.

It could happen. The Pirate Bay should be sued out of existence(with the war on software piracy). A few years later it could return as a online digital locker source to buy the latest software. Best Buy could than purchase it. It would be the Pirate Bay in name only, but that is exactly what the "new" Napster has been for the last few years.
