Microsoft have re-launched the UK arm of their programme that gives massive discounts to university students and staff. Discounts are available on Office Ultimate 2007, Windows Vista Ultimate, Office Visio Professional 2007, and Office Language Packs.

Under the programme, Office Ultimate is priced at £38.95, and Vista Ultimate can be obtained for £40.95. That's a saving of over 90% from the average retail pricing!

This is just one of a series of deals that Microsoft run for students around the world. Server 2003, Visual Studio 2008, Microsoft Expression Studio and XNA Game Studio can all be obtained for FREE through the 'Dreamspark' programme, which is available to millions of college/university students around the world.

UK students can purchase Office by visiting the link below, clicking 'Buy Now' and entering their university or college email address (only .ac.uk domains will work). This programme is also available (or coming soon) to 14 other countries around the world.

Good deal for those students needing the "Ultimate" editions of Vista or Office!

It's a good deal for anyone needing Office or Vista period, not just those needing the "Ultimate editions". You won't find either of those in any form for even close to that in retail form. I've taken them up on it for office (get Vista Business for free).

It is weird though, paying £39 for a 3 minute download.

The article just said "Ultimate". Seemed it applied only to that version, not for someone on a low-end computer that needs Home Basic or such.

i think he means that the price from the ultimate steal is cheaper than basic versions, so even if you dont need the features that the ultimate version has, it's still a better deal

As long as your hardware meets the requirements.

Yeah that's what I meant, in retrospect, it's a pretty garbled sentence.

Is there a System Requirements difference between the different versions of office? I haven't checked

It's a good deal. Luckily, I've got an MSDNAA licence at my Uni, so that saves me almost £80.

I'm quite aware of the "It's not cheating" program as thats how I got my copy of Office 2007.

I was talking about this year's Visio and Vista deal thats been announced for the US (and now UK). Although, now that I've checked the UK site, they are still listing only Office as part of the deal. Hope this is the case with Aus as well, and that more of them are coming!

They're listed under 'Additional products' on the left.

I'll see if my contact at Microsoft can shed any light on whether the additional software will be added to the Australian programme this year (they do work in the UK though, so I can't promise that they can answer this for you)

...
Is the option to have Jerry and Bill deliver it to your house, and play pingpong with you an option to purchase?

I have to admit, I'm not sure, I haven't taken the purchase all the way through (I have office anyway, and I don't have my @worc.ox.ac.uk address yet)

Pretty cool.
I don't actually know if any of the apps in the dreamspark thing will be of use to me in my CS degree, but it'll be pretty good to have them anyway, and to have a mess around in them once I get started.

Yes indeed.

My fiance is coming to the end this month of her masters, I got Vista Ultimate retail for £47.50 which includes DvD
delivered to our home, today, delivery will come soon.

Next month Vista ultimate upgrade is available, will be getting that I guess.

First cheap offer to hit Finland without the need for Visa/Master etc. credit card I hope.

Last student offer was missed by me because I as a student didn't of course qualify for such a card back then ...

Let's hope MS shows more flexibility in the payment methods this time.
#8 Harreh on 16 Sep 2008 - 19:22
Yeah, I got this a week or so ago in my mail from my Uni which I'll be going to later this month. I don't have my .ac.uk email yet though (I know it.. I think.. but I don't think I can access it.). Plus I might end up being able to get it anyway.

Plus I have 2003 anway, 07 would be nice. OneNote 07 is way better than 03 so it might be worth the upgrade just for OneNote.

Gah, I both love and despite these Ultimate Steal promotions:

(1) Getting Office/Vista for a significantly cheaper price is a wonderful way to get students to use such software legally.

(2) Since these promotions make Microsoft software more palatable, it becomes more difficult to suggest something like Linux/OpenOffice. Sure they're free, but hey, the promo offers such a lower cost version of existing software, might as well just pay the lower amount and continue using industry-standard tools. Or something like that. Point is, it removes the desire to bother with the alternatives, which I think is part of the point.

And yet we lap it up. I know I did - got Office in the last promotion. I feel dirty.

Just downloaded an awesome version of office 2003 portable with visio earlier. Finally, a working one whereby at college I don't have to use that disguting mess so called office 2007. I remain with the original thought; with office 2007 I wanted an upgrade, not a dodgy pile of complete crud that is harder to insert text in the way you want than getting a GUI working on a special version of DOS, running on 2MB flash at 400MHz embedded board is. Pathetic.
#10.1 C_Guy on 17 Sep 2008 - 14:40
Ha ha ha, yeah when you can't learn a new piece of software it's the software's fault.

Office 2007 is really not that difficult. Most children in our school system have picked it up pretty easily. When Office 2003 is retired maybe you will be ready to try it again.

Office 2007 is a worthy upgrade but only for those open to improvements and new ideas.

would be nice if we get to choose if the copy of vista we get was 32bit or 64bit...
