News Corp’s MySpace launches a new online music service on Thursday, aiming to loosen Apple’s grip on the US music industry and challenge all other online rivals. The service, MySpace Music, also aims to come to the aid of a music industry reeling from the continued slide in CD sales. MySpace Music is viewed by the music industry as an alternative to prior partnerships, most notably, its pact with Apple’s Steve Jobs. Label chiefs have long grumbled that Apple’s iTunes service is primarily designed to funnel profits back to Apple’s iPod and iPhone devices at the expense of the music industry. But so far, no contenders have managed to dent iTunes.

The big three labels – Vivendi’s Universal Music Group, Sony BMG and Warner Music Group – together own about 40 per cent of MySpace Music joint venture. “Ultimately, it gives us some skin in the game,” says Rio Caraeff, Universal Music Group’s executive vice president of digital. “It gives us a voice in the ongoing development of the business.”

EMI had been the lone holdout, but joined the group at the last minute. Sony ATV and independent music group The Orchard are also participating. Chris DeWolfe, MySpace chief executive, says he wants MySpace Music “to be the biggest music catalogue in the world”. Some 5m artists already own profile pages on MySpace.

The company believes it can better connect to its 120m global visitors, 65 per cent of whom already stream music on their profile pages, with a more integrated and flashier interface that gives members access to the catalogues of these artists rather than the handful of songs they can currently upload.

And they move away one more step from being a social networking site, and more into a business venture. You can't blame them, they will soon be over taken by facebook, until facebook's successor comes out.

Soon? Everyone jumped ship to Facebook about 6 months ago. MySpace has been rotting away ever since.

oh noes!, another online music service.

It's not exactly like other online music services though. You can stream everything for free as far as I know (supported by myspace's already obnoxious advertising). It'll be nice if you're at your computer and there's a song you want to hear but don't own.

Resistance is futile.

Competition is a GOOD thing, guys.

Not if you've had a RICO level monopoly strangling all aspects of music creation and artistic expression.

FTA "Label chiefs have long grumbled that Apple's iTunes service is primarily designed to funnel profits back to Apple's iPod and iPhone devices at the expense of the music industry."

The actual artists who create the music have long grumbled that studio accounting is primarily designed to funnel profits back to the label chiefs at the expense of the artists.

It's like a Mad Lib only not so funny.

F**K the RIAA.

I was thinking the same thing... the huge music labels are moaning because they are loosing out and so "the music industry" is affected. They don't care about the actual music (in the sense of music and artists) - they just care about how it affects their pockets. There needs to be a record label co owned by artists, and no-one else.

The record companies should be thanking Apple for convincing people to actually PAY to download music. Instead they're giving Amazon an unfair advantage (DRM-free) to try to break Apple's grip.

People still seem to prefer the superior AAC anyway, Fairplay and all.

who actually PAYS for that crap?

Interesting move, but they have to offer something that the iTunes music store doesn't have, otherwise its completely pointless. With Apples dominance of both the media player device and store markets, competition is going to be hard brushed to get anywhere without something really inovative...

According @stifler6478 , this service can give (or let them heard) music for free, so this can be a plus in comparison with itunes.

It's been proven that you lose IQ points every time you visit a MySpace page.

What ever happened to getting laid the old fashioned way? Having a nicer car than everyone else at the bar and putting your car keys on the bar waiting for some stupid prat to ask you to the bathroom?
