According to a report by NewTeeVee a court has ordered RealNetworks to temporarily suspend distribution of its RealDVD product until Tuesday.

The Judge will review papers filed in the case by Hollywood movie studios until Tuesday when a decision will be made whether to keep the ban for longer.

The software, only available for a week, is a DVD ripping and archiving product allowing for personal copies to be made. As soon as the software was made available last Tuesday Real and the Hollywood studios both launched lawsuits almost simultaneously, with Real pre-emptively asking for a declatory judgment and the studios wanting sale of the product blocked, saying it violates copyrights.

Currently the RealDVD site has the following message for customers "Due to recent legal action taken by the Hollywood movie studios against us, RealDVD is temporarily unavailable. Rest assured, we will continue to work diligently to provide you with software that allows you to make a legal copy of your DVDs for your own use."

If this gets allowed I see no reason why DVD Decryptor shouldn't be legalised along with it. From where I'm coming, this does what DVD decryptor does and then converts the VOB files into another file format (presumably .rm).

Indeed, it's almost pointless them going after them when it's been available for years.
#1.2 ThaCrip on 06 Oct 2008 - 11:18
i also would like for 'DVD Decryptor' to make a comeback but i dont think it will happen cause if i recall the guy who makes it is called 'LightningUK' which if i where to guess he's from the UK... so laws might be a little different there.

so in other words if this goes through and it's determined legal ... it still might be questionable over in the UK.

p.s. it's a damn shame thought that DVD Decryptor was shut down due to the "higher up's" applying pressure on him... cause that program was BY FAR the best for decrypting dvd's AND it was FREE to

AFAIK, It's perfectly legal to make backup copies for personal use in the UK. We have no direct equivalent to your DMCA as over here, companies don't get to dictate to government officials.

1st: He now makes ImgBurn
2nd: DVD Decrypter is still out there and works

DvdFab puts that out. Sometimes works better than AnyDVD.

I thought they (DVDJohn) successfully challenged this law. Why are we repeating it again? Or am I thinking something else

Why do people insist on using anything made by Real?? Their software and format has always been garbage and always will be.

Do you remember Real Player circa 1995? If you did you would know that is was the best player for about 3-4 years. Heck, it was the first internet streaming music player. You might want to be careful with words like "always."
#3.2 Angry_Badger on 06 Oct 2008 - 11:25
Even if you dont like Real, this could be a landmark case. If Real take on the industry it would set a great precedent for the smaller guys if they won.

For once I wish Real the best of luck.

Realplayer has always been horrible, it doesn't matter if they were the first for anything, but I do hope they can get past this ban, I wouldn't mind trying this dvd ripper.

Realplayer 10 works very well in Linux. It has none of the bloat or system-wide integration crap that the Windows versions traditionally had. But then again, no-one uses Linux so no-one but me would have known to mention it, right?

This is true, I almost forgot about my linux/realplayer experiences, never had any issues with real at all under linux, in fact it seemed to be the only media player that would work correctly.

2 day old news just reported on the front page paints Neowin in a less than flattering way.

So? Two days is just 48 hours. It's still new news to other people.

Then look elsewhere for news, no one is making you come to Neowin. As a free service, they certainly have no obligation to you.

Then you're 2 days behind the times.

With news sites, staying current is paramount. Just because you didn't know, doesn't mean the rest of the world didn't.

Does anyone really give a damn if the rest of the world knows? Or do you actually sit impatiently at new articles thinking that knowing what happened the same day actually affects your life as opposed to reading it a day late.

I couldn't give a crap if the rest of the world knows, I just have an interest on whats going on, and when I find out, I find out.

Course, you could give me crap about reading news on world war 2 when i was in grade school. OH NOES!!!!!! I WAZ 59 YEARS BEHIND THE TIMES zOMGZZ!!!!!!!!111oneone

What's much more interesting is the extreme likelihood that these people read an article on Neowin, then intentionally google it to see if it was posted anywhere else significantly earlier just so they can have the opportunity to come back here and complain that it's old news.

It's kind of like the people who'll click your username to see what your past posts are like just so they can make ad hominem attacks.

Or that I've read it on three other sites 2 days ago and then see it here now.

God forbid that Neowin could be improved in some areas.

Perhaps you fail to comprehend what the purpose of a news site is. Hint: it's not to report on old news and to be scooped by other sites.

The zomg business is not the way to argue your point. It just makes you appear more idiotic.

Only one site can ever possibly have the "scoop" on something, and obviously it can't always be Neowin.

I stand by my comment: 48 hours. And those were mostly weekend hours.

Heh. I've been using SlySoft AnyDVD/CloneDVD2 for years. They have never been hit with a lawsuit.
(1 reply) #6 C_Guy on 06 Oct 2008 - 15:57
The FACT is, you are permitted to back up any media you legally own as long as it's for your OWN use and not shared or distributed. There's simply nothing that can take that right away from a paying customer.
#6.1 Danielx714 on 06 Oct 2008 - 19:20
unless of course the media you purchased has DRM and their servers are going off line

I never liked Real, but I dislike people telling us what software we can and can't use even more.
#8 ir0nw0lf on 06 Oct 2008 - 16:54
No offense, but how many of you who have posted above comparing this to AnyDVD/CloneDVD/DVD Decrypter have actually read how this software supposedly works? This supposedly makes a CSS protection intact copy of the DVD onto a drive. It does not circumvent the copy protection like most/all of the programs mentioned above. They supposedly add a 2nd layer of protection (DRM as some would call it). I see no reason why the goons would file suit against them, esp. with the Kaleidoscope court case precedent already out there that allows them to do pretty much the exact same thing.

So please stop comparing this to those other programs, as this does not supposedly circumvent any copy protections at all!

(And for the record, I personally hate Real and all their products, but this case could set a good or bad precedent for the future)
#9 waldenasta on 06 Oct 2008 - 17:05
I agree. If I buy something then I should be able to back it up without the government or any "company" telling me other wise. Personally I don't see what the big deal is!! I have been using DVD shrink + Nero for years now and it works beautifully.
#10 clotz2000 on 06 Oct 2008 - 20:53
I'm not telling anyone what software they can and cannot use, in my personal experience with anything Real has ever made it was much worse than other software that either does it for free or other pay for software with the same features that works well. Plus who really wants .RM video files?? Also back in the day when everyone was excited about RealPlayer (And yes I do remember when it first came out) it seemed that every company wanted to include this in every installer executable whether you needed it or not. I think Google & Yahoo Toolbars are the new RealPlayer...

And who cares where or when it was posted first, if it's the first time it's on Neowin than everyone should be able to share their opinions and thoughts without everyone saying "This is sooo old, I've been commenting about this for weeks!" get over it and continue posting where you found the story weeks or days earlier...
#11 Atlonite on 07 Oct 2008 - 10:04
yeah im in the i pay i use group as far as im concerned once i pay for a dvd it's mine to do with what i want i payed for the right to do so so long as it is for my own personal use and not going on a p2p sharing site then i don't see what the problem is as far as im concerned the Mpaa and Riaa are just like Hitlers SS but without the gas chambers and prison camps but i bet they wouldn't mind them tho so i hope Real wins its case and sticks it to the man
