According to a report by NewTeeVee a court has ordered RealNetworks to temporarily suspend distribution of its RealDVD product until Tuesday. The Judge will review papers filed in the case by Hollywood movie studios until Tuesday when a decision will be made whether to keep the ban for longer.
The software, only available for a week, is a DVD ripping and archiving product allowing for personal copies to be made. As soon as the software was made available last Tuesday Real and the Hollywood studios both launched lawsuits almost simultaneously, with Real pre-emptively asking for a declatory judgment and the studios wanting sale of the product blocked, saying it violates copyrights.
Currently the RealDVD site has the following message for customers "Due to recent legal action taken by the Hollywood movie studios against us, RealDVD is temporarily unavailable. Rest assured, we will continue to work diligently to provide you with software that allows you to make a legal copy of your DVDs for your own use."

so in other words if this goes through and it's determined legal ... it still might be questionable over in the UK.
p.s. it's a damn shame thought that DVD Decryptor was shut down due to the "higher up's" applying pressure on him... cause that program was BY FAR the best for decrypting dvd's AND it was FREE to
AFAIK, It's perfectly legal to make backup copies for personal use in the UK. We have no direct equivalent to your DMCA as over here, companies don't get to dictate to government officials.

1st: He now makes ImgBurn
2nd: DVD Decrypter is still out there and works

DvdFab puts that out. Sometimes works better than AnyDVD.
For once I wish Real the best of luck.
Realplayer has always been horrible, it doesn't matter if they were the first for anything, but I do hope they can get past this ban, I wouldn't mind trying this dvd ripper.

Realplayer 10 works very well in Linux. It has none of the bloat or system-wide integration crap that the Windows versions traditionally had. But then again, no-one uses Linux so no-one but me would have known to mention it, right?

This is true, I almost forgot about my linux/realplayer experiences, never had any issues with real at all under linux, in fact it seemed to be the only media player that would work correctly.
So? Two days is just 48 hours. It's still new news to other people.
SO? This is the first I've heard about this ruling.

Then you're 2 days behind the times.
With news sites, staying current is paramount. Just because you didn't know, doesn't mean the rest of the world didn't.

Does anyone really give a damn if the rest of the world knows? Or do you actually sit impatiently at new articles thinking that knowing what happened the same day actually affects your life as opposed to reading it a day late.
I couldn't give a crap if the rest of the world knows, I just have an interest on whats going on, and when I find out, I find out.
Course, you could give me crap about reading news on world war 2 when i was in grade school. OH NOES!!!!!! I WAZ 59 YEARS BEHIND THE TIMES zOMGZZ!!!!!!!!111oneone

What's much more interesting is the extreme likelihood that these people read an article on Neowin, then intentionally google it to see if it was posted anywhere else significantly earlier just so they can have the opportunity to come back here and complain that it's old news.
It's kind of like the people who'll click your username to see what your past posts are like just so they can make ad hominem attacks.

Or that I've read it on three other sites 2 days ago and then see it here now.
God forbid that Neowin could be improved in some areas.

Perhaps you fail to comprehend what the purpose of a news site is. Hint: it's not to report on old news and to be scooped by other sites.
The zomg business is not the way to argue your point. It just makes you appear more idiotic.
then my job is done... or am i suppose to raise my approval rating of other people online who I do not know or will never know in my real life?

Only one site can ever possibly have the "scoop" on something, and obviously it can't always be Neowin.
I stand by my comment: 48 hours. And those were mostly weekend hours.
So please stop comparing this to those other programs, as this does not supposedly circumvent any copy protections at all!
(And for the record, I personally hate Real and all their products, but this case could set a good or bad precedent for the future)
And who cares where or when it was posted first, if it's the first time it's on Neowin than everyone should be able to share their opinions and thoughts without everyone saying "This is sooo old, I've been commenting about this for weeks!" get over it and continue posting where you found the story weeks or days earlier...
