Apple updates its notebook line

During its Notebook event at Apple's Town Hall today, Apple refreshed its entire notebook line, utilizing glass and aluminum on their redesigned models. The new MacBook and MacBook Pro begin shipping today, and will utilize updated processors, GPU's, and RAM. In addition, Apple has updated the MacBook Air with a new GPU and a bigger hard drive.

Along with these updates, Apple has announced a new LED backlit cinema display, with a similar aluminum and glass design.

The new laptops have a new kind of trackpad, discarding the button and instead making the whole trackpad a clickable button. The trackpad is also multi-touch, and made completely of glass for smoother tracking.

The GPU utilized in the new notebooks - the nVidia GeForce 9400M and 9600M GT for the MacBook and MacBook Pro respectively - is one of the newest offerings from nVidia. Apple is the first to bring these cards to market, and are promising up to 5x the performance of the previous Intel chipset offered in earlier MacBooks.

Along with the new features and hardware, Apple will now manufacture the laptops in a new way which they say will reduce waste and result in a more durable laptop. The new process involves taking a block of aluminum and carving out the new case. The process is more precise, resulting in a thinner and more durable build.

The new MacBook starts at $1,299 USD, while the MacBook Pro is selling for $1,999 USD and up. Apple is still selling the white, plastic MacBook for $999, and the 17 inch MacBook Pro maintains the classic MacBook Pro design.

Stay tuned for Neowin's review of the new MacBook Pro.

Ah, I had sent this in... Oh well..

I soooo want the new MacBook!

Ridiculous pricing for the UK as usual (the white Macbook dropped to $999, but becomes £20 more expensive for UK buyers).

Apple really need to explain this one .
#2.1 DomZ on 14 Oct 2008 - 19:02
Yeh I was disappointed with the UK pricing as well
#2.2 Nestea_M@n on 14 Oct 2008 - 20:38
Yeah, I know you were discussing this in the IRC channel. Its quite strange that they did this. There will be answers sooner or later about this mishap.
#3 PsykX on 14 Oct 2008 - 19:02
Canadian prices are wrong as well.
University prices are wrong as well...

Sad thing is, I'll still have to buy one.

The MacBook features only the nVidia GeForce 9400M. It's the MacBook Pro that features both the nVidia GeForce 9400M and 9600M GT graphics cards in one machine. Also shouldn't the awesome new manufacturing process be mentioned?
#4.1 simon360 on 14 Oct 2008 - 19:25
New manufacturing process mentioned. However... I said respectively, referring to the MacBook for the frst card and the MBP for the second

its funny when u order a macbook, u can choose to buy Final Cut Express 4... but macbooks don't have Firewire

I like the new macbook design, but not including the firewire is a big minus..
#5.1 Magallanes on 14 Oct 2008 - 22:23
AFAIK :it came with a firewire800 but firewire400.

MacBook Pro has FW800, but the new MacBook doesn't have anything that says Firewire

Very nice. Once again Apple raises the bar. Time for yours truly to upgrade . . .
#6.1 C_Guy on 15 Oct 2008 - 17:09
Bar means price? Weird!

I love the aluminum case, but really, glossy screens only? Also, why displayport?
#7.1 Islander on 14 Oct 2008 - 21:10
So they can sell their adapter and make even more money. Or better, sell their 24" screen !
#7.2 thenewbf on 15 Oct 2008 - 03:17
How on earth do you make glass non-glossy?
They chose DisplayPort because of its numerous advantages over DVI and HDMI.
Here's a comprehensive comparison between DisplayPort and HDMI, if you're interested: http://www.edn.com/index.asp?layout=articl...cleid=CA6594089

The new MacBooks look like Marvin The Martian.
#9 +ArtOfTheWire on 14 Oct 2008 - 20:36
I LOVE the specs, don't like the style. I was tempted to order one while reading the hardware but then I saw it and was disappointed.
#10 GP007 on 14 Oct 2008 - 21:11
Aren't those nVidia GPU's nuked? Or I guess it's a new batch that works this time?
#11 offroadaaron on 14 Oct 2008 - 21:18
whats the deal with the 17" going up in price, no? and only having a 8800GTM still!!

No matte option = disappoint
No blu-ray possibility = disappoint

How can they say they cater to musicians/artist pros? I kinda have bigger CF cards in my cameras than 2 DVDs put together now. I'd like to archive a wedding without having to rent a dump truck to move 1000000 DVDs to a different location. One blu-ray disc would have solved that problem. I also would like to not have to look at inaccurate colors and make my calibration useless thanks to glare.

This thing had a lot of potential, but then it was like someone said they saw a man who looks like Jesus but can't walk on water. Sorry, but Jesus has to walk on water :p And Macbook Pros need matte screens!!!

Seriously, even the more expensive (for PCs) Sony Blu-Ray notebooks remain superior in price and features to these "new" models. Boo.

#14 jamesyfx on 14 Oct 2008 - 21:40
I'm a little disappointed - the extra rounded corners of the case, the glass/glossy screen, and the black keyboard with the spaced-out keys. Looks a bit cheap.

Those were the reasons I chose my MacBook Pro. Now those reasons are void! I'll just stick with this one thank you.
(1 reply) #15 jordanthegreat on 14 Oct 2008 - 21:55
I wish these had come out a few weeks ago before I bought my Thinkpad. I was considering mac at the time. Now I REALLY want one.

Am I understanding this right? The glossy screens are actually glass screens?

Yes

Good thing you never bought computers when 2000$ for a laptop was cheap.
#17 Antaris on 14 Oct 2008 - 23:11
Wow! I'm a hardcore Windows user, and I have to say those Macs look pretty darn good...maybe...just maybe...
#18 Hanif on 14 Oct 2008 - 23:12
$1399 for Canada? damn that sucks!! and no backlit keyboard on that version either
(1 reply) #19 offroadaaron on 14 Oct 2008 - 23:22
I wanna know more about the dual graphic cards.
#19.1 Islander on 15 Oct 2008 - 08:17
As Steve would say: "It's an amazing thing. So powerful, easy to use, it's made for you!". You just go into the settings, change some stuff here and there, log out, log back in, and then you can use the other graphics adapter.

Oh... no dual really. Forget about those two working together side by side. As Steve would possibly say" "Errr... uhmmm... it's an issue we are working on, because we want to give you the very best!"
#20 virtorio on 14 Oct 2008 - 23:40
Glossy screens on the Pro machines? No thanks.
#21 offroadaaron on 15 Oct 2008 - 00:19
i think the glossy screen with the LED backlit screens wont be to bad, I mean iphone and ipod touch users don't seem to have problems with glare do they?

Why are a few people in here saying, "I HAVE TO HAVE ONE!!!"?? Do you really have to go out and buy every single new updated Apple product?

Yes, because if you don't get them while they're new they'll be updated the day after you get them.

still the same product though so why does it matter, if it gets the job done then it doesn't matter, and its not a need its a want.

Apple habitat is almost lineal, if you are a apple user and want to update your machine, then you have few options, in this case the new macbook, mbp and mba are the top of the line, from now and during the next 6-12 months, those notebook will be the top of the top. One of the advantadge of such model is the warranty almost every new piece of software will runs fine in those machines.
Instead PC world is different. It's pretty impossible to own the most powerful pc of the market, mainly because newest models are evolving almost every week.

Most NIC's have Personal MAC's to identify them.

Hmm nice...maybe next year I'll grab one. For now my black Macbook is doing just fine and there's no way I can justify upgrading just yet.

Yeah the new hardware is nice but again the price is just too much for what you get. I can get a PC w/ all the apps i need for less than just a Mac w/ OSX. I understand Jobs tries to influence the market with limited ingenuity and an outrageous price tag. Yeah mac is a better quality product but the price for the hardware and the apps are just out to rape the consumer. I mean look what happened when the 1st Gen iPhone was released-600.00 USD the day it hit the street. A few months later the price was dropped by 100.00 USD. Jobs is just out to take your money and run. Like all corporations they're out to take as much money from you and give to you as little value as possible. And with the App Store it's just one more way for them to overcharge you for something that should be paid for but not for the price they charge you. Once Apple gets the hint that the average person isn't going to buy an Apple product due to price they may get more than just Mac fanboys in their moms basements to buy their gear. Oh,wait-Apple is the snobby full of itself computer company that charges twice the amount it should to make sure real people never have access to their products. An Android phone gives me all the features I need and am looking for at 1/4 the cost. Makes me hope that iPhone dominance is over.

But most of this hardware isn't out yet or the technology is not available yet, so you are paying to be the first, so you pay a premium.

I sense some jealousy in your comment, as your trying to justify why you bought/want the android phone rather than an iPhone.
#28.2 DATmafia on 15 Oct 2008 - 05:37
lol, not jealous of the iPhone at all. I wanted to show that you don't have to buy what the masses do to meet your needs. You don't always have to pay a premium to buy what meets your needs.

(2 replies) #30 Digix on 15 Oct 2008 - 07:40
lol they keep winding up the prices. 5 years we'll have mac book pros at only $6,000.

oh wait.

I take it back... next year we will.

they nearly even beat alienware pricing.

AU and NZ $ is almost the same but your paying an extra $600 for being in NZ... thats a rip! you could fly here and buy it and fly back for that price!

Very disappointed in the low resolution of the 13" MacBook, 1280x800 is too small for my taste. :-/
#31.1 +ArtOfTheWire on 15 Oct 2008 - 13:56
all 13.3in screens are 1280x800
#31.2 jamesyfx on 16 Oct 2008 - 11:13
You'd be better off with the 15" MacBook Pro then.
