Windows 7 leaks to Web, pirates downloading

Leaked copies of Windows 7 hit the Internet only hours after Microsoft Corp. handed out a preview build to developers last week, according to searches at several BitTorrent-tracking sites. The notorious Pirate Bay site, for example, first noted the 32-bit version of the upcoming operating system on Oct. 29, just one day after Microsoft unveiled Windows 7 to attendees at its Professional Developers Conference in Los Angeles. A 64-bit edition was posted the following day.

As of midday Sunday, with several copies of Windows 7 available, downloading was brisk. One 32-bit torrent listed on Pirate Bay showed more than 1,400 "seeders," the term for a computer that has a complete copy of the torrent file, and close to 5,300 "leechers," or computers that have downloaded only part of the complete torrent. The 32-bit torrent installs a copy of Windows 7 Ultimate, according to users commenting on the site.

"Windows 7 Ultimate"?

Uh oh, I sense more potential version confusion here a la Vista.

How many versions of this new Windows 7 will there be?
#3.1 PureLegend on 03 Nov 2008 - 17:26
The Vista Betas were known as Longhorn Media Centre Edition. I doubt it means anything.
#3.2 Mr. Dee on 03 Nov 2008 - 18:27
I am not aware of Windows Vista having any MCE editions, it was Windows Longhorn Professional during Beta 1 post Beta 1 releases. SKU's didn't appear until build 5308.

Windows 7 uses the same editions as Vista. There is no confusion because there are just 4 retail SKUs.

Ultimate Edition - No compromise
Business - join a domain, encryption
Home Premium - Media Center, use XBOX 360 as a media extender
Home Basic - Email, surf net, manage photos

Enterprise - Volume License customers, multi-lingual support, UNIX subsystem
Starter - emerging markets, only on new PCs.

and N version and Korean version of each one

Actually I'm pretty sure N version this time around won't happen, because Windows 7 will be bare bones, no additional Microsoft features attatched.

Windows Vista N and K are not actual SKUs since they still share SKU naming conventions with same Vista SKUs they supplement e.g.:
Windows Vista Home Basic N
Windows Vista Home Premium N
Windows Vista Business N

Unless the inclusion of Windows Media Player warrants a N version.

What does the EU want anyway... make Microsoft include the 9x Sound Recorder as the default player?

How is this news? EVERY piece of software ever released has been pirated in some way, shape or form.

Runs in VirtualBox...
#9 IceBreakerG on 03 Nov 2008 - 15:35
I'm running it in VirtualBox at home lol. Actually runs really well. Better than Vista does (I have Vista installed in VirtualBox as well for my development at work). Some of the VirtualBox Additions work as well, but one or 2 failed during install. Just run the installer in Vista RTM compatibility mode to get it to work, then you can set the resolution to whatever you want. I can't get sound to work though.

Maybe MS leaked it ? That's very handy in finding bugs ... lot's of other testers

It's not just pirates downloading it. Also, enthusiasts and people who want to try out this snazzy new Microsoft OS. Not all of them are really pirates IMO.

Ummm... Illegally obtaining a copy of this copywritten software is "copyright infringement", and therefore...

(wait for it)

Piracy.
#11.2 GreyWolfSC on 03 Nov 2008 - 17:18
I want to try it out, too, so I'm doing the illogical thing: waiting for the public preview version.
(1 reply) #12 Yinchie on 03 Nov 2008 - 17:49
It isn't for sale yet, so its not really piracy?
But available for beta testers.
Now they just have more testers, more like a open beta.

I know you are just trying to make a joke. But whether or not it is a product that is "for sale" yet is quite irrelevant.

Microsoft holds the copyright. It is their software, to be distributed as they choose.

If microsoft were really bothered about this they could implement a simple solution... say they hand out 20 copies of the latest build to a select few, hide some kind of identifying ID in a file/registery/wherever... wait till it leaks to internet, download, check the ID, call the person the ID corresponds to.

don't think this is a solution man...sure it identifies the person but as soon as its in the wild they still wouldn't have a solution to stop it from spreading

well next time they would not give that person a copy...

And then the pirates would remove the freaking ID number.
And then your back to square one.

but the whole idea is its inside a random file.. impossible to find if you dont know where to look.
#14 Ambroos on 03 Nov 2008 - 20:29
Surprise surprise

Well what do they expect if they give it out in ISO's on little HD's...

More test beds for them at least.

It is hard to see how this is neccessarily a bad thing for MS. Oh wait, isn't this what kinda happened with Vista? All the people tried the Vista beta, got mad because of all the bugs, ended up hating the final product.
#16.1 kiddingguy on 03 Nov 2008 - 23:46
...and since Win 7 supposed to be better - based on comments I've read - this can only be a good thing/idea to change people's perpectives on Windows 7. At least I guess.

#19 Windows7even on 03 Nov 2008 - 23:56
If microsoft WANTED to stop pirates from leeching their beta software then i am sure they would develop some means to do so, ie. have to asctiave before even using the os/no 30-day trial..We all know that they love user feedback on betas and test software..its what keeps them making software..testing these betas gives them a chance to fix all the problems before rtm

I would ask that all Neowinians avoid illegal downloading of software products, as an example to the online world.
