As many of you have already seen Intel Core i7 reviews have hit the web, and most reviews have given the Core i7 the thumbs up. Benchmarks puts the i7 inbetween the Core 2 Quad Extreme series and the SkullTrail Gaming platform. This is an impressive feat for Intel, giving the customer a good excuse to upgrade their system just before Xmas. So what’s AMD going to do to fight the Core i7?
This is where Deneb comes in. Deneb is AMD’s 45nm quad core competitor. Deneb is the replacement for the currently underperforming Phenom. Although AMD managed a great technical feat with the Phenom managing to create a true quad core cpu Intel’s 2xdual core design still beat it on outright performance.
This month AMD will release its first “Deneb” Phenom CPU’s:
Phenom X4 20550 @ 3.0 GhzIt’s not known yet how well the new cpu’s will perform or their exact specification, but it is known that they will be compatible with current AM2+ motherboards with a bios update, so unlike the Core i7 a motherboard upgrade will not be required.
Phenom X4 20350 @ 2.8 Ghz
Its also expected that AMD will bring back its “FX” enthusiast line of CPU’s in 2009 using the AM3 socket.

So what if I bought an Athlon X2.
We feel sorry for you
no need to upgrade mobo or ram, its the credit-crunch-approved upgrade.
There's no "sane today, sane tomorrow" choice for Intel.
You can buy reasonable gear today, and throw it out tomorrow for Nehalem.
You can overpay for DDR3 today, and still have to replace a board for Nehalem.
Or you can buy affordable DDR2 and an AM2+ board today, and soon get Deneb.

Whats the rush? why not wait? first release is always buggy and problem prone. Wait till they fix them up and the price comes down.
Well, even if you wait, there's no way to get from either AM2 or LGA775 to Nehalem without tossing out RAM, with a replacement cost of at least 100.-
If you're upgrading and already have a AM2+ motherboard, Deneb is going to be a good choice. But if you need to buy everything new, well... The Core i7 seems to be the better choice performance wise.
i am waiting for upgrade.
I believe AMDs Shanghai line of CPUs (which will be in a new socket while Deneb isn't) is destined to compete against the i7s while Deneb competes against the remaining Core 2s. But then again we'll just have to wait and see the Deneb benchmarks to judge if it can compare to i7.
Can't wait to see the specs. I have a Phenom 9850 now, and I have been more then satisfied with it, huge upgrade over my old X2 S939.
1x 16x PCI-e
2x 8x + 8x PCI-e
3 or 4 x 4x + 4x +4x ...PCI-e
instead of
1x 16x
2x 16x + 16x
3 or 4x 16x + 16x + 16x ...
if im going to be paying 700+ dollars it better damn well be worth it i just worked out what it would cost me
MOBO = Asus Rampage Formula X48 $480.38
CPU = intel q9650 $985.50
RAM = OCZ Reaper HPC 2x2GB pc8500 cas5 $273.38
Grand Total = $1739.26
and thats using my 2 hd2600xts and Hdds and DVD burners and Case and PSU which will need to be upgraded to atleast a 700 watt so theres another 2~300 dollars
MOBO = Asus M3A32-MVP Deluxe / WiFi $339.00
CPU = AMD Phenom 9950 Quad-Core BLACK EDITION $349.00 (im pickin the new core will cost around this)
RAM = OCZ Reaper HPC 2x2GB pc8500 cas5 $273.38
PSU = Thermaltake 750W Toughpower Modular PSU $219.00
Grand Total = $1180.38
and thats still using my graphics cards hdd's and dvd burners
and i can add another $876.60 or so if i want to flip the HD2600xt's for a single 4870x2 i wish i lived in the US prices are so much cheaper there than here
