Amazon has taken initiative in taking the necessary steps in producing a cleaner environment, starting with its packaging. Amazon promises to help remove the annoyances that customers have with their over packaging, by cutting down the molded foam, wire ties, and clamshell plastics. The company spoke about the frustrated feedback from consumers about the clamshell packaging. The company said they would focus on reducing the amount of plastic-coated hard wire ties, and "clamshell" packaging that the company produces

The online giant wants to cut costs in areas of shipping this holiday season to help push market shares, and improve overall customer satisfaction. This greener move by Amazon, is surely to help increase profit during the holiday season where more consumers turn to the Internet for Christmas shopping needs.

This greener campaign of Amazon couldn't come at a better time, during the weaken US economy. Amazon reported $4.06 Billion, up 41% in the second quarter of 2008, with 31% of sales in Media, and 58% in Electronics and other merchandise. The true test will come at the end of this month when consumers do most of their shopping online.

I get stuff in a cardboard fold down box when I order stuff but I always thought that was pretty recyclable.

I think it's the overly obsessive packaging they want to dispose of. For example, I ordered a hard drive (from Pixmania) and it came as follows:

Hard drive -> Antistatic Bag -> Padded Envelope -> Foam Padding -> Cardboard to stop the foam padding -> air filled "bubble" padding on top -> cardboard box -> "documents enclosed" walled on ourside.

That could easily be reduced to hard drive -> AS bag, foam, cardboard box.

I got a package recently from amazon. It was a box in a box... Kind of pointless

I just opened a package (literally 5 minutes ago) from Amazon and it was simply a box with my 3 books and a large strip of big plastic air bubbles for the left over space to stop the books from bouncing around. Seemed a lot better than a bunch of Styrofoam peanuts.

Most places don't even use styrofoam peanuts anymore, the new ones are cornstartch based and you can melt them in water, they are kinda neat

Packaging less would be great as I do get rather large boxes for small items.

I am also pleased amazon.co.uk do super saver delivery for £5 and more rather than £15
