Apple & AT&T have confirmed that 3G tethering will soon be available on your iPhone. Users will soon be allowed to connect wireless to their laptops, computers, and other mobile devices.

Tethering has already been available to users who jailbreak their iPhone, with an open SSH connection. Jailbreaking allows users to access files not available any other way on their device. This has allowed communities of customization to the iPhone be relatively available to anyone who Jailbreaks their device.

The functionality and release date have not be confirmed as of yet, but many suspect an announcement coming soon from Apple. Speculations about whether this will be free or not has not been confirmed from Apple.

Very cool - it's a must-have feature for any 3G phone I believe so this is a step in the right direction. I wonder if this will also be allowed for other territories where the iPhone is sold.

There's no way O2 would implement this. I guess we can dream though.

Expect to be charged more by AT&T to do it. I know verzion has a tethering charge

at usually charges $30 more for tethering so $60 a month total

Try $100.

Cheapest plan is $70 + ~$30 = ~$100.

Tack another $5 onto that if you get the cheapest SMS plan as well.

thats with the voice and messaging. I was just saying the data alone is $30 and it becomes $60 with the tethering. I work for at&t so i am pretty sure they will follow the tethering plans for the PDA's and BlackBerry's

I am curious to see what they charge, for a feature most people already use for free.

The point is that you are not supposed to be doing it for free. They can see it sometimes and if caught you may have to pay data charges on it. Then again I have a motorola phone I can tether anytime I have to.

I just hope its a feature for both Windows & Mac.

It is good for internet on the road when there isn't wireless available. The typical setup with the iPhone was to setup an ad-hoc network between the phone and the PC and the phone would automatically handle routing for the tethering.

To have internet wherever 3G service is available?

T-Mobile just has it as part of their normal data plan. Another +1 for T-Mobile.

yea, im glad its tmobile who offers the iphone in germany. we dont have tethering yet aswell but way cheaper plans, even with the difference in euro - US-D and a great customer service and almost 100% 3g coverage in whole germany.
ive heard alot of complains about at&t.

in canada with rogers/fido tethering is included in that popular 6gig data plan that everyone jumped onto.. hope this is true, wouldnt mind having a true tethering without having to worry about jailbreaking. i think it would be great as well if it would work with usb, to avoid killing the battery on wifi.

anyway, is this actually "confirmed" by apple? or is it just related to what the AT&T ceo was saying?

So what the hell is the big difference between surfing on your phone with the data plan and tethering an iphone to a laptop. I surf on the iphone all the time, and I pay for the data plan. Why would they need to add more to my bill to allow me to, in essence, do the same damn thing???
