Following the announced delay of Windows Mobile 7, an intermediary upgrade step has been confirmed. While visiting Australia for Liberation Day, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer spoke of the Windows Mobile 6.5 upgrade for next year in his roadmap. In talking about Windows Mobile 6.5, Steve Ballmer did not go in to specifics but did hint at an improvement in the interface and flow of the software. It is believed, however, that this will be the first release to contain the reported Zune software integration instead of the much delayed Windows Mobile 7 release.
Though there was no specific date given for Windows Mobile 7, it was believed to be scheduled for as late as the third quarter of 2010, two years away.
Sources close to Microsoft have indicated to Neowin that Windows Mobile 6.5 is currently being readied for device partners who should receive copies within the next month. It's possible that 6.5 could be ready in 2009 Q1.

A little confused on the last sentence though ... if OEMs will receive copies by next month, how come 6.5 will be ready by 2009 q1?
Yup. I am pretty much waiting for the same thing. If HTC uses Windows Mobile 6.5 with Touch HD, I'll get it. If not, I'll stick with my K800i for several more months.
Most definitely will make it even better then already is :p
HTC/Tilt and it runs like a champ..... using it until the HTC/Raphel/Fuze has
been around a little while before making the jump.

coming out with WinMo 7 during 2009 was not an option IMHO.
Prepare to see 50% of the WinMo market being split between iPhone and Android.
Bad move MS, very bad move.
From where did you pull this BS out?
Don't tell me you just copied that anonymous comment from pocketnow's forum! pleaseee

A number of sites mention further delays (in addition to that first one reported from cnet). Of course it is all speculation. Microsoft aren't sharing and perhaps have not even planned their roadmap for WinMo 7. This is why I mention no specific date given.
In the speech from Steve Ballmer, if you were to listen to it, he does rather vaguely go over the future 24 months.

My guess is that they will get it out in time at the same time a Windows 7 for marketing reasons :

and this :
Here's some interesting news I just found in nVidia Q3 report:
http://seekingalpha.com/article/104608-nvi...nscript?page=-1
"Marv Burkett
Tegra is doing really well. And I’ve said that Tegra was not ready for production this year because the design win process tends to be longer. And I also have said that Tegra is coming out party is really spring of next year. So, I look forward to talking to you much more about that, spring of next year."
So here's one of the reason why WM7 is being delayed again. If you remember Tegra was supposed to come out in Q4 08 just like WM7...
