Toshiba release gaming laptop with 3 GPUs

Toshiba isn't the first company most people think of when you're imagining an ideal gaming laptop, but this latest news might just change your mind. The Qosmio X305-Q708 is Toshiba's brand new laptop, featuring not two, but three Nvidia GPUs, in addition to an already powerful setup. Two Nvidia GeForce 9800M GTS graphics cards accompany the 9400M GPU. This, in addition to an Intel Core 2 Extreme QX9300 processor (at the stock speed of 2.56 GHz) and 4GB of PC3-8500 DDR3 1066MHz SDRAM make it insanely fast.

The 7,200rpm hard drive offering 320GB of space, whilst fast, may be a little restrictive for those who store masses of games and videos, but otherwise should be more than adequate. The primary hard drive is 128GB and Solid State too, which saves power and keeps it quiet.

Whilst this powerhouse might offer quite possibly the most performance for a personal laptop, the price tag is a little less appealing, currently available from ToshibaDirect at $4199.99. Also, despite the power saving abilities, don't start getting ideas about playing Crysis for hours on end without a power cable plugged in somewhere - battery life will still be devoured if you use it to its max with no external power. However, for those who want ultimate mobile performance, and a plethora of features with it, the Qosmio X305-Q708 is the solution. Check out the laptop through the link below:

Those are not painted-on flames on the lid. Those are actual flames shooting out the back. The reason it looks 2D is that this laptop comes from another dimension, a dimension of sound, a dimension of sight, a dimension of mind. It's from a land of both shadow and substance, and also money. If you buy one, you have entered... the insanely overbuilt laptop zone.

Batter life is all of 15 minutes? These things are not much more than desktop replacements with integrated uninterrupted power supplies.

That is too generous for a Toshiba Laptop, I'm thinking probably 30 seconds at the most

This is kind of stupid.

My first reaction was "ugh, what a waste." Laptops should continue to be for mobility. If you want a mobile gaming PC, just build yourself a small form-factor system. I know it doesn't have the built-in monitor that a laptop would have, but at the same time, that laptop would have all sorts of heating issues, wouldn't be nearly as powerful as a similarly built desktop, and you can forget about ever using it on battery power. Cost-performance ratio is pathetic, but I suppose if you're looking to buy a tri-gpu system in the first place, money is probably not an issue.

What I find funny are the number of users who will say that iMac is too restrictive and expensive, and yet, are quite happy to purchase an over priced laptop which they will only ever use as a desktop replacement.

Its a desktop replacement with portability being second priority (well, in terms of battery life). I guess the general assumption is that you're going to have it plugged in most of the time anyway.

I think it's kind of cool. You can just use the integrated graphics on the go and should get ~3 hours or so battery. When you have a power source, switch it to run full power. One system to take the place of a desktop/laptop combo.

Nevermind, just read it's a 9400M as the third GPU. I'd rather have a x1300 and then the 2 GPUs.

Yeah, we're supposed to cheer because they are giving us THREE gimped mobile chips instead of 1 or 2 good desktop grade chips. Puh-lease.

So...uh, how many hard drives does it have?

"two 7,200rpm hard drives..."

One of them is solid state? How can they both be 7,200rpm if one of them is SS? lol

I was wondering just how that SSD is going to have ANY RPM, let alone 7200.
After spending $4k for a laptop, my head would certainly be spinning!
Dunno about the SSD.

BTW, OP - there is no "U" in Qosmio.

Thanks for your feedback

I looked into your queries about having Dual Hard Drives yet SSD, and I actually based this article on the source. Interestingly enough, Toshiba's specification page contradicts itself, which would explain how I got it wrong:

At the top of the product page:
Dual 7200rpm hard drives offering up to 400GB of storage mean you can hold all your favorite games

Yet in the specification, it states:
Hard Drive Size
128GB Solid State Hard Drive (SSD)
Secondary Hard Drive Size
320GB 2nd HDD
Secondary Hard Drive Speed
7200rpm

If anyone else can understand the specification, please correct me, but I'm pretty sure that there's not three hard drives in that thing despite what the source says.

Regarding the spelling, we'll soon be able to edit our submissions after posting, so that won't be a problem again.

Well there is two hard drives but only one is 7200rpm (Dual 7200rpm is a mistake) and the other is 0rpm

Cheers, I'll change that

The only thing that makes this beast a laptop is the actual form factor. None of the advantages of having a laptop exist here.

A desktop PC can easily outperform that laptop at half the price. It's a waste of money if you ask me.

I have a Gateway P-6831fx, T5420, 8800 GTS $1,100. It absolutely owns any new game I play at full settings. The point here is overkill.

Btw, if you have a Gateway P-6831 FX, and it's crashing. Just blow out the vents w/ a can compressed air to clear the internal dust. Avoid spray can leakage, by not being so close to the vents. You can also prop up the back on a book. Enjoy. For more, google Gateway P-6831fx crash, my post should be the 1st or second link.
