Myspace 2.0

That's right, Myspace has made another leap into the Web 2.0 community now releasing its own 2.0 style launched at midnight.

In laymen terms Myspace 2.0 is faster, more customizable and more secure. According to the Myspace administration the new Myspace allows you to "create your own website" using your own styles.

The new system allows you to choose who can view any module on your space. You can set whether you want a module to be public, private or even use your friend categories.

Also, speed is increased because you no longer need custom hacks or themes as everything you need is built into the Myspace system itself. For example, you can set a custom number of displayable comments instead of using the default 50.

You can move all your modules around so you can switch up where you want everything. You want comments on the left hand side and interests on the right? Move them.

And if you don't like the new system you can revert your profile back to the original style.

Check out Tom's Blog for more detailed information.

Myspace = Fail.

Exactly.

It's really quite amazing how they went from being the number one social networking site to being irrelevant. Facebook is more popular because it has better functionality - releasing a new skin isn't going to make MySpace popular again.

Yes, it's a huge lesson for web sites out there. If your site is buggy and annoying to use, you are not going to last long at all

Learn the lesson!

Buggy and annoying as it may be, MySpace is still immensely popular and used daily by millions. To discount that would be ignorant and farcical.

Myspace is the 7th most visited website in the world, and it's been around for quite a while.

Myspace needs to die already

MySpace has the worst looking pages of all social sites by far...

Hopefully for them, with this refresh they can make user pages more readable or functional.

However, i don't like it and don't use it.

I prefer Facebook myself but can understand the draw of MySpace for those in their teens.

Heh, I choose Facebook over MySpace and I'm a Junior. I hate how much MySpace has altered relationships while young. Now it's considered "weird" if I don't have a MySpace profile. Teenage relationships seem over run now by MySpace. While it use to be, in the good ol' days, you would call your girlfriend/boyfriend, now it more of just sitting and commenting on each others profile back and forth. I feel sickened that MySpace is what is considered "fun".

Atleast in my city this is how people behave. I feel sad that MySpace has put that big of an affect on my city. Whatever, I'll be weird and use a phone

This is a much needed update & has some fantastic features! It's a shame it wasn't like this to start with so people didn't ruin their pages with ridiculous styles - I assume many would have chosen the default themes (from the choices), like I have temporarily.

It's a shame it means none of my CSS works now, as they have changed the underlying code for the profile layout & I really haven't got the time to code it all again to work, ahhhh well, now my MySpace is rubbish, at least I mostly use Facebook now

Myspace is for kids and sexual predators.
#7 gigapixels on 11 Nov 2008 - 01:16
I've always had a MySpace, and for the longest time I preferred it over Facebook because Facebook felt so impersonal. Now I'm starting to warm up to Facebook and I use both just as frequently.

I think this is an excellent step for MySpace. The only problem is that they had a sweet ninja theme when they launched it last night and they took it away

Quick question to Kyle Korth:

How did you get that music player on the screenshot? The one with all the different songs? I can only get the one with one song on it

Thanks in advance.

http://music.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=music.mymusic if I remember correctly. You make a playlist and it should give you the option to add it as your default music player.

And I think if you add a new song to your profile it should automatically update. =]

The feature is disabled at the moment, it says (probably due to the 2.0 upgrade), but I will check it out when it is available again.

Thanks for the great article & the heads-up on this by the way!

More secure, everyone that has there profile set to private after they upgrade to 2.0 is no longer private....perhaps a bug, but it only shows the profile and comments.

You have to set your stuff to private by clicking the little pencil above the modules in customization mode.

Has anyone else noticed Neowin looks very similar to Myspace? (aside from the comment boxes, user pictures, games)

No.

Great. The level of customization they allow is much better. Never thought I'd see MySpace and W3C Standards in the same sentence. I really like what I've done with my profile now: http://myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=us...iendID=46869941
#13 Ayepecks on 11 Nov 2008 - 03:28
I actually love the new look. I think it's a step in the right direction. The customization is very neat. Looks as good as Facebook now, IMO, just needs better functionality.
#14 WhoTheF on 11 Nov 2008 - 03:56
I didn't know people still care about MySpace. Would anyone care if it died out?

Facebook won

I cant understand why so many of you are so quick to dismiss MySpace as 'cr4p'.

MySpace is serving a different audience to Facebook, mostly unsigned musicians and wannabe glamour models. Many of you would probably feel the sameway about Bebo, but again, it's a different audience, it's social network for teenagers.

I think that the only reason Bebo and MySpace survive is because they allow their members to fully customise their profiles, where on Facebook, the majority don't want in your face flash slideshows of half naked ladies (although its nice, just not at work!... Just an opinion anyway
#17 jafoman on 11 Nov 2008 - 10:41
Still can't compete with Facebook... Not sure why I still even have a Myspace page.

You mean MyWASTEOFspace.com?

Site should be banned from the internet as should facebook and all those "social" gathering sites.

God I still hate the term "web 2.0".

The three things that bugged me about myspace:

1: Custom layouts, mostly girls abusing it by putting pink with white text making it impossible to read
2: Music that started playing automatically. I don't care if its there, but if I'm listening to iTunes or don't want music, I don't want to be bombarded
3. Random strippers adding me as 'friends'

I hate myspace. I log on to check for messages and stuff, but other than that I don't feel the need to be on there. It's only cool when your 16 years old.

Oh and I tried their new 2.0 thing. It sucks.

Facebook is equally as annoying. Sick of getting these stupid bumper stickers and drinks and all this BS I don't want.
#21 C_Guy on 12 Nov 2008 - 16:41
I would say let MySpace die already but then where will all the children go on the Internet? They might have to seek a life in the real world (oh "noes"!
#22 pete mcb on 22 Dec 2008 - 16:20
OK, just one thing - Facebook is CRAP! Myspace is far better than Facebook by far, at least you can do what you like to your profile unlike Facebook! You cant add music to Facebook, You can only unpload a maximum of 60 photo's to Facebook per folder (When the uploader works) The chat on Facebook keeps crashing, Facebook looks like a BORING CV! the old Facebook took ages to load the page because of everyone's pathetic obsession with apps, now they have upgraded Facebook it's harder to navigate around. Also when Facebook came onto the scene they said you could never get hacked or phished on there, HA you were all fools, I've had loads of friends who HAVE been hacked. And lastly, Most people on Facebook are stupid enough to put their real names, addresses, phone numbers, have heard of Identity Fraud? It happens especially on Facebook. I really hate the site, I have always been for Myspace since I joined, it's my home and thats where I will be staying. Has for the security on Myspace - yes it had it's faults but I think if you came back to Myspace and set your setting CORRECTLY in the first place - you wouldn't have lost your profile or got sucked in by your local spammer.Try doing your homework ladies, you might just learn something.
