Gmail offers new Inbox themes

Advertisement (Why?)
Gmail owners, Google, wanted "to go beyond simple color customization" and have announced 30 new themes.

There's many new themes to fit your style, a shiny theme with chrome styling, another one that turns your inbox into a retro notepad, nature themes that change scenery over time and even a weather theme that can rain on your mailbox. There's even an old school ascii theme (Terminal) to geek up your mailbox.

Google have also done some work to Gmail's default look to make it "crisper and cleaner".

To customise your inbox, go to the Themes tab under Settings. Google say they will be rolling out themes to everyone over the next couple of days, so you may not see the themes just yet.

Gmail users have been building up custom themes using third-party tools like Greasemonkey or custom user stylesheets for quite some time. Officially, Gmail previously offered the mobile, classic HTML or their normal views only. Google also uses themes in products like their personalised homepage iGoogle or Google Reader's shared items page. The new Gmail themes will certainly be a welcomed addition for many.

Here's an overview of some of the themes to give you an idea of just how far you can customise your Gmail look.

There's supposedly a Themes tab under Settings, but I can't find it

But.. but.. I've been with them since they were in beta!

*Looks at logo* Oh, right...

My mom got it before I did. It's a little annoying, actually. She hardly uses her gmail.

That MAY be the point; Target smaller, less used accounts first to see how much it strains the systems. Only a thought, I could be wrong.

Peace,
James

login to gmail goto http://mail.google.com/mail/?shva=1#settings/themes should make it 'kick in'
#4 Navan on 20 Nov 2008 - 08:57

#5 reed1 on 20 Nov 2008 - 09:04

#7 Awesomeness on 20 Nov 2008 - 09:17

#8 macster on 20 Nov 2008 - 09:23
Wow very nice
#9 Zilos on 20 Nov 2008 - 09:44
very nice, finally, was sick of the old theme, just too plain
#10 PROGAME on 20 Nov 2008 - 10:04
the cool part is that after you fill in your location (county+city) some of the themes will get darker when it's dark or rain when it's rainy in your location!
#11 xpgeek on 20 Nov 2008 - 11:03
My girlfriend freakin loves the pink one. I'm more of a standard white background kinda guy.
#12 YouAgain87 on 20 Nov 2008 - 11:24
Finally, something to liven my inbox a bit more.

The first one looks like what would have happened if Gmail had been designed by Microsoft:

we will change the browser URL from http://gmail.microsoft.com to the more professional looking http://by114w.bay114.gmail.live.com/mail/mail.aspx?rru=home.

#14 darkpuma on 20 Nov 2008 - 11:53
awesome! might stick with the standard, but some of those are real tempting

****ing gay if you ask me, that can only be fun for a 5 year old,i closed my gmail account today, theres no future with gmail, hotmail is the best
#15.1 smooth_criminal1990 on 20 Nov 2008 - 12:00
usually I'd agree with that, if it weren't for the horrible new colours live has now got!!
#15.2 vetbangbang023 on 20 Nov 2008 - 14:17
You closed it because of the added feature?
#15.3 seebaran on 20 Nov 2008 - 14:35
Birdie, don't use 'gay' as an insult. It's, well, insulting to those of us who are.
#15.4 +chorpeac on 20 Nov 2008 - 14:50
Dude, hotmail has went from 4/5 in my book to a 1/5 with their recent changes. I wish there was an easy way to move all my mail from hotmail, because I would setup a forwarding gmail account just so I don't have to use it....
#15.5 Glendi on 20 Nov 2008 - 16:18
Did you just say Hotmail is better than GMail?... rofl
#15.6 +Dakkaroth on 20 Nov 2008 - 19:05
Seems like we have a child on the board. Seriously, "gay"? New features made you close your account?
#15.7 birdie-87 on 20 Nov 2008 - 22:19
most people use hotmail, because its the best... for most people lol

yahoo mail is the worst, than comes gmail which is ok, just that, nothing special, its to simple and has this child look to me. those themes are awful. i always thought about closing my gmail account, but thought maybe google will make it better one day and add something useful, playing with those themes around for a while leaved a bad taste in my mouth, i was discusted by gmail, hotmail is the best - the new version that is, previous one with that classic and full mode sucked, and took ages to load, but the new one is just beatifull and quick. iam a mac user btw. thats why i got gmail in the first place
#15.8 supernova_00 on 20 Nov 2008 - 22:38
birdie-87 said,

Stope using IE then. Gmail is lightnig fast with Firefox, especially 3.1 betas
#15.9 LordJTC on 20 Nov 2008 - 23:12
I like Yahoo Mail, don't know why you are calling it the worst... I have had a GMail account since the first day and a Yahoo account for much time (through my ISP). Both are great in my opinion. I have never had or opened a Hotmail account - I refused to use Windows Messenger until they opened up the Passport system.

Why would you close an account because of a new feature though... THAT is "gay". You could always just use the classic theme...
#15.10 birdie-87 on 21 Nov 2008 - 00:15
umm i was talking about the previous hotmail version being slow as hell and the new one is very quick... so i dont need to change a thing

so you never used hotmail?, thats why you like yahoo mail and gmail coz you dont know what good email is. when you will experience hotmail you will think different about the other emails out there

the new feature was the point were i had enough of gmail, you all dont get it. I see more in this feature than you all do. I see the big picture haha

u sir r a fool
u dont know anythin about gmail
its got web based message filtering, the best junk filter out there...very little advertising(i dont notice it)..
i honestly dont even see a comparison..hotmail has like no new features..they just keep reskinning it lol

sounds like ur just ranting because something didnt go ur way with gmail..or gmail was too hard 4 u to use? (if thats even possible)
but really..gmail has 100x more features than hotmail..hotmail hasnt added anything in years
#15.12 birdie-87 on 21 Nov 2008 - 05:52
what a ****in clown, i complained that its to simple, its like an email client for 5 year olds, and you say i found it to hard to use

i have been with gmail since it came out you fool, saying hotmail only is reskinned shows how much you know about hotmail. Its got so many new things and will get even more things once wave 3 comes out.

#15.13 McDave on 21 Nov 2008 - 07:04
I have just switched form GMail to Live Hotmail because of the intergration with Messenger. But I still think GMail is better. Adverts are handled better, they have free pop3 + imap, can forward to any email account not just GM (live can only forward to live for free), https login + sessions, sent email ain't tagged with adverts like in LH.

Found LH unrealiable and unable to login a few times the last few weeks.

#16 +NeoFlux on 20 Nov 2008 - 12:07
My account hasn't been upgraded yet.
#17 Michael1406 on 20 Nov 2008 - 12:18
Some of these look similar to the "Better Gmail" themes in the Firefox extension of the same name.
#18 The Patri0t on 20 Nov 2008 - 12:24
This is good and good timing after the bad hotmail look move :|
#19 Windows7even on 20 Nov 2008 - 12:28

Themes are not static

Yesterday i installed the TeaHouse theme where a fox was taking the tea inside the building.
But now the fox is playing around the garden. :-D

Great .... totally love the Gmail tem in Google . I think its one of the best in Google. They are very innovative and Creative.
#26 +0sm3l on 20 Nov 2008 - 18:01
I like the notebook one
#27 plastikaa on 20 Nov 2008 - 18:32
The Ninja one is fantastic... however they clearly missed an opportunity for Ninjas fighting pirates.

Hopefully this will soon be added to gmail accounts with custom domains

I can't stand any of them. I switched mine back to the default as soon as I could.

I've got my new theme installed. I've had a thought, new video chat, new themes, could Gmail be close to coming out of Beta?
#30 Mr Spoon on 20 Nov 2008 - 19:01
Yeah, look at the themes. It is almost like they got Iben from the wallpapers forum to design them!
No offence but they all look a little on the rubbish side to me - I can't stand people having pictures as a background that are too much as they take away from what you are actually looking at the page for :/

If Hotmail/WLM had a Gmail style notifier, I would think about switching.
If Hotmail stopped adding a signature about messages to ourgoing messages, I would switch instantly!
#31 Ambroos on 20 Nov 2008 - 19:10
This one made me switch back to GMail from Windows Live Hotmail. No more obtrusive adds!
#32 nuuance on 20 Nov 2008 - 21:00
I'm liking these so far, I had been using Gmail Redesigned but it no longer works correctly, so I've moved back to the boring default look.

Slightly annoyed that I don't have that very nice mountains theme though or is it not yet available?
#33 j2006 on 20 Nov 2008 - 21:57
This is nice and all.. but some of them are a bit weird.. like the ones where the logo is different.. but oh well lol

As for those who are complaining about ads in Hotmail.. they are making more changes by the end of this year.. such as removing the ads from the top, more themes, integration of web messenger and skydrive, slight alterations to the layout, etc, and FREE POP3 support (no more requiring a connector).... they announced this last week after some complaints with the new wave 3 version.... I look forward to that. :-)

Good job both of them. lol
#34 Michael1406 on 20 Nov 2008 - 22:26
I've got the themes now...not sure which one I like best. I like themes where they actually use black font instead of grey ones.
#35 Mohan Ram on 20 Nov 2008 - 22:33
Love the steel, that one goes well with the theme I am using in Ubuntu 8.10. The others aren't bad either.

dam.... that means custom domain accounts doesn't have it (yet) ... or at least the following doesnt work

https://mail.google.com/a/domainhere.com/?s...settings/themes

#37 Stormeh on 21 Nov 2008 - 01:01
Love the navy blue/orange one
#38 avoidz on 21 Nov 2008 - 01:04
Nothing wrong with Yahoo! Mail. Been using it for years (classic) and no problems whatsoever.
#39 birdie-87 on 21 Nov 2008 - 01:36
i got a ridicoulous amount of spam into every yahoo email i had. None with other email accounts. Yahoo must be selling email addresses to spammers. Makes sence since their in a shithole and going down soon
#40 birdie-87 on 21 Nov 2008 - 01:54
my name is birdie and iam an email addict lol
#41 LoquaciousOne on 22 Nov 2008 - 05:42
Summer Ocean! Pretty pretty...

Actually several so far I've recognized from themes offered for iGoogle's Pages. Anyhow, it's much nicer than the old gmail and a welcome reprieve.
