The end of the road for Yugo

The Yugo, a car my family had as I grew up in Sarajevo has ceased production. This technologically "innovative" and cheap car from the early 1980's has not changed much in design, but consumer customization and the technology being implemented by its drivers launched the modern "pimping" [customization] of cars.

Production of the car has officially ended after almost 30 years. Just like the Lada and the Skoda, the Yugo was often ridiculed. Apparently Yugos came complete with heated rear windows to keep your hands warm when the car needed a push - just one of many jokes inspired by its questionable quality.

There are cars with spoilers and television screens. In a shiny white Yugo the entire boot is full of speakers for the sound system

My housemate had a red Yugo in the late 90's early 2000's - was a battered up old rustbucket and a laughing stock, but we still pushed 90mph out of it.

Yugo ftw.

My dad owned one (it's something almost any family in former Yugoslavia went through: owning a Yugo. And hoping you'll get something better in the future ).

Ah, Yugo, Yugo . I never did own a domestic vehicle (Yugo is a Serbian car), but my driver training was conducted on it . It was pretty interesting in it, esspecialy becouse I'm 2 meters high, and it is not pleasant being caught in a Yugo.

It was about time that our manufacturer stoped making it, becouse that vehicle is being produced as is for about 30 years. Fiat bought Zastava, and we will only have Fiat's vehicles. Zastava is already manufacturing Fiat Punto Classic (the one before Grande Punto), and they are planing to start with Topolino. Some even say that Linea will start producing in 2010.

The interesting thing is that I own a Lada and a Fiat . And, to be honest, a 15 year old Lada is way better than a 5 year old Yugo.

You do realise that the Lada is basically a FIAT 124 and the Yugo is based on the FIAT 128?

We still take driving lessons with Yugo cars here in Macedonia. And my dad has one.

Yugo ftw.

I remember when these first hit the states. At one time, a lot of car dealers had deals where you got free his and her Yugos when you bought more expensive cars.

Reminds me of a Mk1 Golf.
#11.1 WebWolf on 22 Nov 2008 - 16:28
Not really. Golf Mk1 is a lot bigger, and pretty different. They do not have much in common.

there is a little company in Serbia that will produce Yugos with small electric engines. They can be useful, but the engine will be pretty week.
