Citing a source at Microsoft, Techarp has revealed that Microsoft is targeting a release candidate (RC) version of Windows Vista SP2 for February 2009.

Microsoft sent invites to testers in mid October asking them to take part in the SP2 beta. Build 16489 was released to special group of testers in late October but Microsoft has been quiet since then.

TechArp also believes the RTM of Vista SP2 will be in April 2009. Microsoft is readying SP2 so there are additional incentives for customers to upgrade to Window Vista now, instead of waiting for Windows 7.

Microsoft will include Windows Search 4 in Vista SP2 along with Bluetooth wireless support (including latest BT 2.1 fixes), support for the new VIA 64-bit CPU and additional application compatibility updates.

Sounds good. Those using the beta haven't ran into any problems from the looks of things. I dunno if there is much if any sorta performance gains as yet though. Stability and compatibility improvements are there though.

I've found that coming in and out of sleep mode is faster but bootup is slower. anyone else finding the same results?
#2 leesmithg on 24 Nov 2008 - 13:36
The problem I found was, that after install system seemed to speed up.

However, it seemed to go back to how it seemed before install of SP2 beta.

So I hope that the RC is working properly.

Excellent, and not soon enough. As long as some of the networking kinks are worked out, I can see this being nothing but a winner.
If it improves my 7 minute boot up time, I'll be well chuffed.

Excuse me? 7 minutes?? You're joking, right?

I wish. About 4 to get to the logon screen and another 3 to make the PC usable. I'm not taking into account the 3-5 mins it takes the network card to spring to life, cos that happens 3-5 mins after getting to the logon screen.

There must be something seriously wrong with your installation. But is Vista typically that slow to boot up in general once you've been using it for a while? :s
#3.4 Sacha on 24 Nov 2008 - 14:48
Yeah something seriously wrong there. I'm using a laptop that is on minimum spec.
512MB RAM
AMD64 Athlon 3200+ processor.

Boots up vista in about 30 seconds, another 10 seconds for desktop to become usable. Hibernate boots up in 20 seconds and desktop takes only about 2 seconds then. Sleep, well.. that's instant.

Edit: And what's with your network card issue? My laptop connects instantly to the university across the road as soon as the desktop is visible.
I have a feeling your computer is below minimum spec badblood. Should have stuck with XP or try Linux.

Not in my experience.
#3.6 Typhon on 24 Nov 2008 - 14:53
Mine boots up in about 13 seconds. I have raid0 but even with my old laptop it took about 28 seconds.
#3.7 badblood on 24 Nov 2008 - 14:53
I'm on a Core 2 with 4GB RAM and shed loads of hard disk space. So under spec'd I'm not. I am due a yearly reformat soon though, so that will probably clear the issues I'm having up. I hope.

Yea, u have issues dude if it takes 7min to load Vista. Check your startup and see what you have loading when Vista loads.

No. Vista gets faster the longer you use it as it becomes familiar with your habits. Vista is at its slowest when you first install it.

Let me guess... you possibly have an external USB hard drives plugged in - and its probably a Western Digital like me. When plugged it at boot it causes my system to hang for about a minute... Unplug it and from power on to desktop is less than half a minute for me.

Ive heard other USB devices causing similar problems - if ur network connector is USB it may be causing a similar issue - try unplugging that.

Let me know if it works!

*This is to do with the USB devices supporting boot from USB - however this doesnt work in Vista. However if your motherboard supports booting from USB also it will list your USB devices as bootable devices in BIOS. It will therefore scan them making ur system hang for a while. Sometimes running them through "non motherboard" USB slots will resolve the issue, or turning off booting from USB in the BIOS (if you can) will also solve the problem. Simply unplugging them will also obviously work if u can't do either of the above.

It would certainly surprise me. Vista defrags automatically.
#3.14 nunjabusiness on 25 Nov 2008 - 04:06
Vista's native defragging doesn't work worth a damn. Even Defraggler is better. Get Ultimate Defrag or JKDefrag and do what NEEDS to be done.

In my experience, the faster your hard drive the better vista boot speed is, i have a fairly crappy system (E4500, 2 GB RAM) and it boots in around 20 seconds, constantly for last 1 month with no degradion in speed what so ever. but i tend to look after my start up a lot, so i have only sidebar and kaspersky loaded at start up, network card is also initialized instantly... u might wanna update your network card driver ....

And to the guy who is running vista on 512 MB of ram ... "plz don;t do this, it hurts like hell"
#3.16 badblood on 25 Nov 2008 - 09:05
Timed it last night, 5 mins to boot. I'm going to defrag the disk when I get home tonight, even if it's not 100% needed. I think a reformat will help though.

Thats if you use the ready boost feature....at least that is how ready boost is supposed to work.

All my systems boot up right after the Vista install in 30 seconds or less. This is from the time I turn on my PC to the time I can see the desktop.

You'd prefer to install hundreds of patches on new machines?

No, MS has always been the fastest company to release patches/updates. Its called supporting your customers.
#5.2 thealexweb on 24 Nov 2008 - 17:33
Not always, with some updates they get years to be patched. For example at the moment IE7 has seven security holes, unlikely that they will all be fixed soon.

I am sure they will be fixed soon. It has been proven that MS is the fastest to release patches.
#5.4 GP007 on 24 Nov 2008 - 23:22
Are they in IE8 beta 2? I think that's something you could check out and see.

To be honest, i can't wait for this seen as how XP became nice and smooth and 'perfect' with SP2, i really cannot wait to use this, i think it will really make vista what vista is ment to be, expecially with Windows 7 in development i guess Microsoft are also taking alot of careful work on SP2 for vista.

Actually I think SP1 was like "the SP2 of XP" for Vista. Since they swapped kernals with Server 2K8.
#6.2 GP007 on 24 Nov 2008 - 23:23
He's right though, XP had loads of problems until SP2 which was a major update.

SP3 hasn't done anything on my old system though. I can't even tell I've got it installed.
#6.3 usman767 on 25 Nov 2008 - 08:48
Vista is absolutely smooth and perfect in SP1 state, infact so great that i tested windows 7 with new shiny taskbar, and came back to vista in 1 day as it was quite ruff on the edges (abviously as its pre beta stage) ... but vista is awesome at its current stage...

v113 is better than v105
Only issue for me is windows explorer will freeze from time to time.
#9.1 GP007 on 24 Nov 2008 - 23:24
Is v113 the newest still?
#9.2 +kpo6969 on 25 Nov 2008 - 00:02
As far as I know yes.

@ anyone; I have this one question, with SP2, are we looking at MS tying in vista and Windows7? so MS doesn't alienate Vista users....in a way so they are similar?

any help?
#10.1 vetSHoTTa35 on 25 Nov 2008 - 00:15
Windows 7 is it's own OS and if you want to upgrade to that then do so. If you don't Vista will continue to work just fine. If you feel alienated that's your problem.

If i buy a 2009 Acura i don't expect to get upgrade to the 2010/11 model via adding in NAV and other stuff mine didn't come with which is now standard with the 2011 model.

Having a bad day? was i complaining? no- I sure think alot of people around here have some bad attitudes.

Got the latest version of SP2 installed and haven't come across any 'major' problems with it, seems solid so far.
