Microsoft intends to rebrand its Live Search service as Kumo next year, according to a TechCrunch report that cited a source within the company. Apparently, the software giant acquired the kumo.com domain name last week and since then has been busy snapping up all the other variants such as .net, .jp, .fr, .ru and so on.

Also being reported as a sign that Microsoft is taking measures to boost its search engine is the fact that it has recently hired Sean Suchter, currently Yahoo's vice president of search technology. Despite Microsoft's recent efforts to encourage Live.com usage, which include actually paying users, their service seems to have reached a dead end and hasn't grown in the past few months. Whether or not these latest moves will improve the company's competitiveness with the other leading search engines remains to be seen.

Live at least was a name... Kumo? Kumo'n...

Yeah indeed.

Also it would seem stupid to start splitting up their "Live" suite of services now. Can you imagine Kumo Hotmail? Or just Kumo Mail? Kumo Messenger? Xbox Kumo? Kumo Spaces? Kumo SkyDrive?

No, me neither. Don't be stupid Microsoft. Splitting Live Search away from the rest of your Live suite would be a stupid mistake.

Heh. For an absolute majority of the world Live sounds same as Kumo - it's an just a word on Latin alphabet with no meaning.

And it looks like it's Japanese.
kumo cloud (n), spider (n)

...why?

'Cause when you fail, you change your name. But it's just like that same location in your neighborhood that keeps changing. No matter what they call that restaurant or store, it keeps going out of business. In the end, it's just a bad location, or too many competitors, and you're not fooling anyone. .Net, Live!, Kumo, whatever... it's the same thing.

Link between Microsoft buying kumo.* domains and rebranding live.* with kumo * is nonexistent. Just because Microsoft are buying up domains has nothing to do with Windows Live...

The kumo domains could very easily be for one of MS's many other projects. Really don't see this has anything to do with Windows Live, which now has a strong brand image as a platform of services (Search, Messenger, Skydrive, and the Windows Live Applications...)

Windows Live has nothing to do with Lve Search. It is a different brand and a different product. The fact that it has "Live" in the name, with the 'orb' logo, adds to the confusion which you yourself have just experienced.

Kumo is linked to Live Search and is very likely going to replace Live Search. It's been proven somewhere...

Guest thats why can't get all the Live products (like Windows Live Messenger) from a subdomain of Live.com search then? No, wait.... you can. http://get.live.com

I hope to God this isn't true. That would be ridiculous.

Yeah, it would be ridiculous. Windows Live was a rebrand anyway.

yeah they broke away from their msn and hotmail roots for the most part.

Windows Live has nothing to do with Live Search. It is a different brand and a different product. This is exactly why they are changing their brand because many people, like you, see the logo and the word "Live" and reckon it is part of the Windows Live brand still (it used to be, but hasn't been since 2006).

Wow. As far as I'm concerned the word "Live" in Microsoft's ads IS THE branding (whether they want it to be or not). Please explain to me why "Live Search" isn't part of the Windows Live brand and, more importantly, why the hell it matters.

Good question and great post.

Windows Live is a great name.. Kumo? Not so great. But where is the logic here? If Microsoft buys some domains it doesn't mean that they'll be changing anything. Maybe they'll release a new product with that name?
#6.1 cJr. on 26 Nov 2008 - 02:08
Please read one of my comment replies nearer the top of the page. We are not talking about Windows Live here, we're talking about Live Search (two completely different brands and products). It is also common knowledge that Kumo is related to Live Search and may not be another product.

Reminds of the Wii name introduction. What sane person would name it's product like this?
#7.1 Vezineth on 25 Nov 2008 - 17:40
Wii was named after a reason, Wii signifies that anyone whether a grandma or a 5 year old kid can enjoy playing. Kumo on the other hand sounds like Kimono which is a like a bedsheet for warping up Japanese Geishas.

Sorry, please explain. How does 'Wii' signify Grandmas and 5 year olds?
#7.3 PureLegend on 25 Nov 2008 - 18:05
"Wii", as in "We" as in "inclusive of everyone including me"
#7.4 +Dakkaroth on 25 Nov 2008 - 19:23
No, "Wii" as in "Wheeeee!!"
#7.5 cJr. on 26 Nov 2008 - 02:09
Both of those
(1 reply) #8 Trauma on 25 Nov 2008 - 17:50
Unlikely. Will they rename Xbox Live and Games for Windows Live aswell? Just doesn't make much sense.
#8.1 cJr. on 26 Nov 2008 - 02:12
Why would they do that? No one mentioned anything about the Windows Live or Xbox Live brands. We are talking about the Live Search brand and product. Live Search has nothing to do with Windows Live or Xbox Live (or even Office Live for that matter). Many people, like you, are getting confused at this because of the word "Live" and the 'orb' logo used in Live Search.
(1 reply) #9 JamesWeb on 25 Nov 2008 - 18:41
They're not going to give up a domain as good as live.com, not gonna happen.
#9.1 cJr. on 26 Nov 2008 - 02:13
Live.com will probably be used for the new Windows Live Home instead It makes much more sense for Live Search to be taken off the live.com domain as Windows Live Home will be the central place for Windows Live services/software.

They're preparing in case Windows 7 somehow blows, and they need to call it Windows Kumo only to say,"This is actually Windows 7."

Japanese for "cloud" or "spider".
#11.1 alan on 13 Dec 2008 - 11:38
so we are going to search on a spider or a cloud?
#12 ThomMcK on 26 Nov 2008 - 09:34
Search is an integral part of the windows live services so I don't know why they would want to separate it?
As Shiranui pointed out it is more likely to do with Microsoft's favourite internet buzzword "Cloud"
