Microsoft to release Nvidia powered phone?

Following on from the recent announcement of Windows Mobile 6.5 comes fresh rumours regarding Microsoft entering the mobile phone market themselves.

For years Microsoft has provided the operating system for use on a wide range of handsets by different manufacturers. This might be about to change. If you believe recent rumours, then Microsoft is allegedly going to launch a mobile phone based on Nvidia's new Tegra CPU which would be annoucned at the forthcoming GSMA Mobile World Congress in February 2009. Microsoft has used the annual event to introduce previous versions of Windows Mobile.

With the news, in late September, of a delay in Windows Mobile 7 the company has been hurrying to make Windows Mobile 6.5 available to handset manufacturers and operators as soon as possible. News leaked early this year regarding the features of Windows Mobile 7. If Microsoft is planning its own device and Windows Mobile 7 will be powering it then the delay could make for a rather interesting coupling for next year. Roll on February.

2 words...iphone killer

Check out tegra Here & Here

finally able to put these small 800x480 screens to good use
wonder how this will affect apple/nvidia's marriage?

The title needs to be edited with a question mark, a 'supposed to release' or something marking this is based on a rumor article from the Inquirer with an absolutely ridiculous video on Youtube.

Is this in the interest of Microsoft and Windows Mobile that Microsoft make the phone and the OS coming with it?
Would the MS partners be happy about that? Would they be ready to pay Microsoft for the Windows Mobile licenses if Microsoft becomes a competitor?

Besides, it's not as if Microsoft ever tried to make a phone (and failed), anyone remember the Microsoft Cordless Phone?
#3 +Xerxes on 27 Nov 2008 - 10:44
I somehow doubt MS plans to release their own phone. Everyone was so sure MS were making a mobile Xbox to compete against the PSP/DS and nothing came of it, I feel the same about this. I could be wrong but that is the feeling I'm getting.
#4 MightyJordan on 27 Nov 2008 - 11:08
If Microsoft decide to make a phone, please don't make it an "iPhone killer"; they'll get crushed! The iPhone has a very strong foothold in the high-end mobile market now, and I highly doubt Microsoft could do anything to push them off the top spot.

I'd love if they released a more basic mobile phone. Possibly combine the Zune with a basic phone, like the iPhone, but without it being 99% touchscreen.
#5 Raa on 27 Nov 2008 - 11:16
I thought they were going to say they were putting 3D into their phones. Damn
#6 REM2000 on 27 Nov 2008 - 11:49
If they do release a phone then HTC etc.. will not be happy, as Microsoft have repeatedly said they are not going to enter the market they leave it to their third parties.

Let's just take it easy.

Nothing can be "killer" if unreleased and based on speculation.

So far, nothing MS has produced in the mobile/handheld device market has been even remotely a "killer" of any similar product by Apple. In fact, we've seen these "iPod-killer" and "iPhone" killer claims before - the former one since the first iPod. Has never proven to be even remotely true.

Let's wait until we see an actual release or at least a comprehensive list of features.

And if MS does release their own phone, there's a good chance it'll end up screwing their WinMo partners, just like they screwed their PlaysForSure partners with the Zune.

Oh really? Their phone will prob use windows mobile hence nobody gets screwed over.

Windows Mobile is a MUCH MUCH better OS than the iphone one. Sure it has a few problems looks wise, but with the huge amount of customization/skins/theme packs etc etc available (ahem xda-developers)...that problem is solved.

And oh guess what...it has COPY AND PASTE.

The Zune as a player is MUCH MUCH better than the ipod...but because apple has a better marketing team...the ipod sells more.

More spooning with Jobs later tonight?
#7.2 +Dakkaroth on 28 Nov 2008 - 00:55
All he said was to wait and see before calling it a "killer". As seen around the web, many iPod and iPhone "killers" have just been duds. That isn't to say there aren't decent phones or mp3 players out there; it's just that the Apple has very well learned how to appeal to the consumers. That doesn't make them any less of a product though.

Oh, and LTD wasn't the one to throw his personal opinion out there like you did. Don't understand what's with the unnecessary attack.

More spooning with Ballmer later tonight?

(see what I did there?)

Wait wait wait please tell me you have seen this guy bang on about how good apple products (no not their marketing, their products) are and how every other product made by another company sucks.

He did it on the Blackberry Storm post, he does it on ALL windows mobile posts etc. (Go read like 2 posts down)

He made a claim about how crap windows mobile is, I went ahead and proved him wrong.

Please...we all know whos the biased one here. I don't claim windows mobile or zune is the best, like he does for apple products, I just say that they are better than apple.

Oh please. All you said was "MUCH MUCH BETTER" and that was it. Sure, LTD is biased, and so are you. The difference is that you attacked him when he said nothing wrong in the post you replied to. Posting to attack someone is just retarded.

Alrite. Fine lets see:

- Multitasking
- Copy and paste
- Skins/Themes/Design packs
- Huge amount of apps available for it
- Huge developer base (both for hacking features etc etc)
- Custom roms
And so on.

I replied to: "So far, nothing MS has produced in the mobile/handheld device market has been even remotely a "killer" of any similar product by Apple"

Now please tell me how my post doesn't show that.

And also please tell me how am I biased when I say windows mobile is BETTER (note NOT the best) than iphone, but I never once said it was the best OS and we should all worship it. I'm not the one who always claims Apple or microsoft or RIM etc etc makes the best things now am I?

But you're free to do so. And I'll even defend your right to do it.

Whether or not MS makes a phone with Nvidia.. The fact is that Microsoft has put time and effort into co-developing the Tegra GPU with Nvidia specifically for its WinCE (the core OS of Windows Mobile) shows their commitment and forward thinking.

Based on the demos it's certainly a Windows Mobile killer! and a huge leap in the right direction.. To-date all Windows Mobile devices have lacked the ability to push out smooth graphics, be it due to lack of GPU's or bad drivers. I've owned every Windows Mobile device (PPC & Smartphone) over the last 8 years (due to my work) and todate no WinMo device has managed to offer a compelling no-lag user interface, including HTC. Whether it's due to profit initiatives or lack of expertise the WinMo platform has progressed slowly over the last few years.

iPhone Killer or not! The Tegra GPU is a huge step in the right direction by Microsoft and one that may spin out future partnerships with Nintendo, Sega, XBox and other game developers to bring over their 1,0000+ GBA titles to the WinMo platform and make a truly compelling all rounded (Phone+Organiser+Music+Movies+Gaming) experience.

Nb. Compared to the iPhone the Tegra+WinMo offers a true multi-tasking experience, watch movies, surf the web and run multiple applications at the same time! which will hopefully inspire Apple to push ahead as well. Bottom line competition is good for all..

Bah, Microsoft is a little late to this game (as per usual). Blackberry and HTC already have iPhone killers of their own. AHem... Blackbery Storm or HTC Touch HD, anyone? The other brands aren't far behind.
#9.1 Stoic33 on 27 Nov 2008 - 17:05
I have a HTC Touch HD and it’s a Joke! Try forgetting "Microsoft" and its involvement all together.. and just focus on "Nvidia" and youll quickly notice how big a game changer the “Tegra GPU” really is! Theirs absolutely nothing that compares to it today in the mobile space.

Both HTC and the Blackbery Storm are both lagy (don’t take my word for it, Google it) the Tegra is a game changer, even one upping the current iPhone (which i'm sure they'll address If it lives up to half its expectations its will certainly up the bar so that all future cell phones will come equipped with proper GPUs..

RIM screwed up the touchscreen interface . . . by making it a big button. The software really wasn't designed to work properly with the touchscreen or touchbuttonscreen, LOL. They did a better job with the Bold.

What's an HTC?

Whats HTC lol....go google.

Btw ever heard of custom roms with direct3d drivers? Go look it up on xda-developers or www.htcclassaction.org

HTC phones do have 3d video acceleration, but for some reason HTC refuses to provide drivers for it.

---

And RIM didn't screw up the touchscreen interface..its a very nice phone and the software works quite well for it. Just because you used it once and found it different to other touchscreen phones, doesn't make it a bad phone. Engadget explains the way the interface works perfectly. Go read it.

oh and btw...it has COPY AND PASTE

Better go read that review again, Razor. They do explain why it works. And why I'm right. But whatever.

http://www.engadget.com/2008/11/19/blackberry-storm-review/

And my HTC comment was sarcasm. I even put a little winky face there.

The Storm's not a bad phone in particular. It's really the iPhone's only worthy competitor currently. It's just a bit underwhelming in light of RIM's experience and light of what we already have.

Hello...
I don't usually comment on articles, but I felt that I have to say this:

The iphone is a joke, it really is. I bought one a month after it was released in the US and I just fell in love, but the more time I spent playing with it, the more I hated that piece of crap.

The battery is useless, as for the ipod, I have 2 dead ipods by the way, the battery only lasts a year then it starts to drain out, and oh, try to change it yourself, even if you have the right equipments, you're gonna scratch your iphone/ipod badly, and i really mean badly that you cannot stand looking at it, and that will make you want to buy another one.

I bet that everyone who bought an ipod/iphone is having more than one and if you just think about it, it is what makes apple products sell, it is a perfect strategy, it will always sell.

iphone app store? man, have you ever people tried that? they sell backgrounds and screen savers! they sell unfinished games which really not working on touch screen!

the iphone looks good, that's it, and not anymore, now i have a zune and nokia e71 and both really are a 10000 times than the ipod/iphone.

sorry for the bad english, it is not my mother tongue.
#12.1 elibi on 28 Nov 2008 - 02:54
oh sorry i forgot to add this,I gave away my iphone to a waiter for free, he was dreaming of having one, so i gave it to him, at least now i drink coffee for free.

1. Take care of your stuff.
2. Don't change out batteries that weren't meant to be changed out to begin with.
3. Try to USE the features of the products you CLAIM to have owned. You're way too obvious, by the way.
4. I doubt that a phone that was already obsolete when it was released can be "10,000" times better than the iPhone, or *anything* for that matter. At least try to make it quantifiable somehow.

So the quantifiable argument that you made against his argument is believable? You are calling him a liar because you didn't see him when he owned the phone? How does that make you any more credible?

THAT was the dead giveaway. Either that, or the individual in question is just TROLLING.

Done.

These are the 2 dead minis and whats left from the iphone "the earbuds"
and dude, i owned an iphone even before the appstore existed and since the installer days, before zibri's ziphone and since the days when you have to jailbreak /unlock the phone yourself.

and take it or leave it, the iphone is a joke
and i am not lying, dude, it is an iphone not a Bugatti Veyron

All these comments are pathetic, GROW UP folks.

Looking forward to Windows Mobile 6.5, I'd be interested to see what Microsoft can come up with.
