Microsoft signs major deal with Dell for Live Search

Microsoft has been seeking to land new OEM search deals with various PC makers (like Lenovo) as a way to grow more quickly its lagging search market share. Not to forget their web search deal with Linspire too.

Mary Jo Foley reports that Microsoft and Dell have signed a deal via which Dell will be shipping new PCs with the Live Search toolbar preinstalled, according to sources familiar with the arrangement between the two companies. Microsoft officials declined to comment on the alleged deal, as did Dell officials. Officials with both companies said they would not comment on "rumors and speculation."

Foley also added that her sources say Microsoft has offered Dell sweet enough terms to entice the PC maker to replace its search-preload deal with Google with a comparable offering from Microsoft. OEM deals are just one way Microsoft is looking to grow its search share.

To PC makers:
Stop pre-installing crapware.

To crapware makers (MS, Yahoo, Google, Mcafee, etc):
Stop offering crapware. It does nothing but annoy us and provides an incentive NOT to use your product.

Exactly. This is part of the reason I refuse to buy brand name machines.

OEMs won't listen to this argument because in their eyes the numbers just aren't there. People complain about bloatware added to OEM PCs, but the fact is the majority of users aren't skilled enough to build their own PC or remove that bloatware.

So you end up with a situation where customers complain to the OEM, but since they all do it the customer continues to buy from them (no OEM incentive to stop as they still get Advertiser dollars and the same user dollars). The advertiser ends up with a nice deal because the majority of those users won't know how to remove the software from the system completely (most people either don't have access to a clean Windows/OS disk or know how to go about formatting in the first place).

Of course I realize I'm in the minority and I'm not expecting OEMs to change their tune any time soon. Just saying that there's even less of an incentive for me now to buy a Dell (among others).

OMG Google got the boot! Someone's going to get shot now...
#2.1 excalpius on 07 Dec 2008 - 06:38
It just means MS paid a whole lotta cash to Dell to make this happen.

I'd rather have MS stuff across the board, than the HP, Yahoo, Google and AOL hybrid mess of crap that came installed on my new machine. This is good news from my point of view.

+1

I agree fully. And the new Wave 3 Live stuff is looking very good.
#3.2 vetmarkjensen on 07 Dec 2008 - 14:30
And I would rather not have Google, Yahoo, AOL or Microsoft "crap" installed in the first place.

It's like trying to decide which turd smells better. I don't want to smell any poo.
#3.3 Boifido on 07 Dec 2008 - 22:33
I agree, but if there has to be "poo" I would rather it blend in then be some random yahoo pos, plus the wave 3 live is pretty tolerable.
#3.4 GP007 on 08 Dec 2008 - 00:26
If all you don't like is the toolbar that's one thing, the newer apps are very nice, and the services look good also. If you use those and at the level they interconnect then the toolbar just helps use them faster and easier.

I know OEM's get paid money to install crapware on new pc's but it would be nice to have the option of opting out.

Give it up. Nobody is interested in Live Search. You'd think they would have taken the hint by now. I guess this is the downside of having so much money, always throwing more money at a problem in the belief that it makes a solution.

You'd prefer to have a Google monopoly, or just two players in the market?

I prefer Live search most of the time...there results are pretty good...
#5.3 GP007 on 08 Dec 2008 - 00:28
I use it as my main search provider for quite some time now. And I've found stuff fine. Granted there's that one oddball search that doesn't work right. But that's been a very very rare case for me.

You also have to remember that googles got a bigger lead in their DB over MS, so they get more sites indexed. Just give it more time.
#6 lylesback2 on 07 Dec 2008 - 09:08
I agree with the no crap ware on new PC's. Just another thing to uninstall / disable once I get a new PC.

Toolbars are so 2003.

So MS had to actually do a deal (read: pay) Dell (the computer industry's D student) to have MS' failing Live Search features pre-installed. After which users will find a way to use Google anyway. Good job.

Firstly, they would be sued to oblivion if they built in this stuff to Windows these days. Apple gets away with it because it's not the big player - MS cannot.

Of course users will find a way to use Google, however the aim is to expose more users to Live Search, as it may take their fancy. That doesn't stop users being able to quickly and easily uninstall the software.
#8.2 C_Guy on 08 Dec 2008 - 16:43
Yes, LTD, it's completely different than Google signing a deal (read: pay) to have their garbage spy-ware pre-installed.

OH NO WAIT! It's exactly the same. Good job on that comment.

Don't assume that "everyone" is a slave to Google. Some people actually care about their privacy. They choose better than Google.

aww man, I hate stupid search toolbars in modern browsers. Most include stuff like popup blocking AND a search box.

Looks like Live search being the IE 7/8 default isn't working

It's only the default on new PCs, not upgrades. Upgrades keep whatever the old setting was.

(And that is nothing new)

Actually, I prefer to have a Google monopoly.

Any monopoly is generally bad.

Agreed. Google is considered this cool hip lil kid by everyone so it seems fashionable to jump on their side and be willing to let Google deflower your new wife, but the reality is a Google monopoly would be very bad for society.

Imagine if Google lost any major competition (MS and Yahoo have the cash resources to keep Google on their toes)... What would stop Google from removing content they didn't care to show (for example a YouTube competitor). They would be able to effectively decide what is online and what isn't since a lot of people take search engines as the gospel of what is online.

When you turn on the PC 1st time and see all of this, just put in the OS DVD and reinstall the OS in like 15 minutes (plain vanilla). Problem solved - even easier than hunt-n-pick with the Uninstallers
If you have a problem of "well I shouldn't have to do this in the first place", there isnt much more to discuss. Its not like it is embedded in the BIOS.

#11.1 +shinji257 on 08 Dec 2008 - 04:30
Unfortunately this isn't an option for most people and last I checked Dell still isn't providing the OS disc up front with the computers. I would also expect some missing drivers until you run that "other" disc.
#11.2 portauthority on 08 Dec 2008 - 06:21
Check again, every Dell comes with restore disks. I've been buying Dells from their site since 2005 and everytime it comes with restore disks.
#12 Intelman on 07 Dec 2008 - 20:57
The Live Suite doesn't bother me.

Google Sidebar does.
(1 reply) #13 J400uk on 07 Dec 2008 - 22:03
Not going to work. Dells are allready loaded with a **** load of google stuff (desktop, toolbar etc) which arent compatible with live search. I hope my new XPS dosent have too much **** installed.
#13.1 GP007 on 08 Dec 2008 - 00:30
The live stuff will replace the google stuff, they're not going to have both on there, that'd be pointless and silly.
(2 replies) #14 +techbeck on 08 Dec 2008 - 04:05
This is really no big deal. I know for a fact you can order a Dell PC with a blank hard drive. Everyone who knows this would choose this option and those who dont know any better really wont care.
#14.1 +shinji257 on 08 Dec 2008 - 04:31
You can? I would of liked to of seen that back when I got my laptop.
#14.2 portauthority on 08 Dec 2008 - 06:21
that option is not available for home users, for the most part. maybe the "N" series or the ubuntu ones.
#15 morphen on 08 Dec 2008 - 04:28
i love Fujitsu Siemens computers, their version of restore is one Windows CD/DVD, and one with drivers and applications.
Just install windows, then pop in the drivers and applications cd/dvd, and mark all drivers, no applications.

Then you have windows without crapware:p
