The Internet Watch Foundation (IWF) has lifted its ban on Wikipedia, which slowed access to the site to a crawl in the UK.

On Saturday the IWF placed Wikipedia on its watch list, a group of web sites that are identified to internet service providers as hosting child pornography. The listing came after the site was reported to be hosting a picture a young naked girl, which was the cover The Scorpions album ‘Virgin Killer'.

The IWF listing slowed access to the site to a crawl as ISPs sought to block it and stopped edits being made by British users. However, the IWF has no rescinded its ban.

"Following representations from Wikipedia, IWF invoked its Appeals Procedure and has given careful consideration to the issues involved in this case," said the group.

Should do public petition/legislation to dissolve/ban the "internet watch foundation" ... internet isn't a place for selective censorship, management from any single company, government, foundation or otherwise group like figure.

The sad thing about all of this: I never heard of this band before I heard about Wikipedia being blocked over in the UK. I never knew this album existed. I never knew what the album cover was. Guess what? I looked it up on Wikipedia when I heard about it, because I wanted to see what the big deal was. Granted, the album cover is pretty weak, and I could see how some people might not like it, but didn't anyone think about this 30yrs ago?

Also, why does the IWF have this type of power that they can directly block websites to an entire region/country?

The IWF does nothing of the sort. They just maintain a list of sites with child pornography on them. It's up to the ISPs to use that list or not. The IWF doesn't block anything.

Ok wait... I'm confused - the article starts off with "The Internet Watch Foundation (IWF) has lifted its ban on Wikipedia" and pretty much ends with "However, the IWF has no rescinded its ban."

So is the ban lifted or not?

...has no[w] rescinded...

Typo, but I thought that for a moment too
