Though we receive many rumours about Apple products, this rumour comes from iDeals China that previously gave us an accurate description of the iPhone 3G almost two months before its announcement. Using tip-offs given by Chinese manufacturers, iDeals China believes that from December 20 of this year, manufacturing of approximately 60 000 'Nano iPhones' per day will begin.

Apparently the new phone will be the same height as the nano iPod but wider and thicker. Surpringly, they do not believe it will have a 3G chipset but will include three sensors, a mirror screen and a camera. The lack of 3G could be explained by the reduced size of the phone not allowing for a high capacity battery. As previously benchmarked by iPhone Hacks, the 3G chipset reduces battery life considerably.

It is believed an announcement of this phone will come from Steve Jobs in January to coincide with MacWorld. Shortly afterwards it would be available in retailers such as Walmart and sold at a competitive price.

The site claims that images will be available within the next week. For now, there is a mockup:

A nano iPhone? Now coming in flavours of 256MB and 512MB? No thanks

another physically challenged apple product ??
#2.1 +Chicane-UK on 14 Dec 2008 - 19:09
Another? Tell me one that is currently physically challenged, based on your experiences of trying them out..

Seems like a silly idea imo. They should just start reproducing iphone 1G's instead of this.

Either way, I'm sure people would rather a thicker iphone minus 3G with increased disk space then a smaller one.

But I guess if they aim this at non or lower contract groups may have a purpose but still not keeping hopes up for anything in terms of cheap price.

I would hazard a guess that this is purely a rumour. The iPhone screen size can't change, people are developing apps for that screen size and if Apple suddenly throw in a new size it could be a major headache for app developers.

What about keeping the same screen resolution, but changing the number of pixels per cm? ...

Thing is, I don't believe this thing. It's already the limit when it comes to typing something on the iPhone and the iPod Touch, why would they continue to shrink it? We don't have fairy fingers or something.

I've heard this objection before and I don't think it holds. Nor do I think that there will be the same amount of pixels in a smaller product.

If you ask me, developers will have a "new" platform to develop for iPhone nano. It's not that confusing, there's already the Mac and the iPhone.

Argh, another phone to target developing apps.

EDIT: Cream beat me to it

This is bull**** ! There are many small and thin phones with 3g capability and great battery life.

Your mock up is wrong. There should be no screen on the shuffle. Press the button and it randomly calls one of your contacts

I look forward to seeing images of this. I cant imagine how a smaller screen would be of any use for the iphone.
#9 LTD on 14 Dec 2008 - 18:18
Rumour so far.

We have no firm details or specs.

Would be interesting if they actually do make a smaller version. It might just be an iPod Nano with phone capabilities and touch. No apps.
#10 zalman on 14 Dec 2008 - 18:26
i hope this is not true Ive been holding out hoping for an iphone refresh during macworld ugh
(1 reply) #11 iAwesomeness on 14 Dec 2008 - 19:03
Hmm if it is true, its pretty pointless if you ask me.
#11.1 PsykX on 14 Dec 2008 - 20:40
Same thought here.
#12 qdave on 14 Dec 2008 - 19:58
i doubt that its true
#13 J400uk on 14 Dec 2008 - 20:09
Probably not true, can't see them making the screen smaller and I don't see where it would fit in in the line-up. The current iPhone 3G is already cheap enough, not going to be much room to slot somethin else below it.

I like the big screen though.. Who would want an iPhone Nano?

It's smaller... iPhone now is just a tad too big.

How would you type on the thing? People complain about the current iPhone's keyboard size. That factor alone kills this rumour.

Exactly my thoughts. People with small fingers and good eye coordination isn't a very large target market.

The only way I can see this working is with superior voice recognition technology. One of the coolest features that my pocket pc had back in 2003 was the ability for me to say "Play (artist, album, song, playlist, genera)" and it would que up a playlist and start playing. I wish my Zune had that feature. If iphone/itouch did, i may consider it.
#16 emzino on 14 Dec 2008 - 23:25
Ok I got it! It has a slide out QWERTY keyboard underneath. Remember I said that first
(1 reply) #17 Windows7even on 15 Dec 2008 - 02:58
ever tried 1920x1200 on a 15" screen...if you have then you know the pain your eyes feel..welcome to the iphone nano
#17.1 Sacha on 15 Dec 2008 - 16:24
Not sure what you mean. The iPhone currently has a very low resolution. If you kept the same resolution (so as not to break compatibility with apps) and reduces screen size, it would be optimal DPI. Similar DPI to other phones.

I'm gonna have to call "shenanigans" on this story. Why on Earth would you want an iPhone with a smaller screen?

#19 mulligan2k on 15 Dec 2008 - 13:25
im not sure these 'small on screen keyboards are impossible to use' arguments hold water. remember there are plenty of other touch screen phones with a smaller screen than the iphone that are just as usable, im thinking specifically of the htc diamond which i currently use, but im sure there are other examples. however, saying that, i use my thumb-nail to click on my phone, which as we all know doesn't work on the current iphone screen....
