Three of four underseas Internet sub-cables broken

Advertisement (Why?)
According to telecom provider Interoute, three of the four underseas sub-cables connecting Asia to North America have been severed for unknown reasons. These cables carry more than 75% of the internet traffic between the America, Europe, and the Middle East. The cut occurred today somewhere in the Mediterranean, between Sicily and Tunisia, though, at present, the reasons for the cut are unknown; nevertheless, France Telecom has stated that it thinks an attack is "unlikely."

At present, 65% of internet traffic with India is offline, 59% with Singapore, 44% with Malaysia, 55% with Saudi Arabia, 52% with Egypt, 39% with Taiwan, and 51% with Pakistan. Yemen and Sudan have also reported phone and Internet difficulties Friday, though it is unclear whether this is tied to the outage. The breakage will probably take several days for the cables to be repaired, so business traffic is currently being routed through lines going to the US. More updates as they come.

In January this year a breakdown in an international undersea cable network disrupted Internet links to Egypt, India and Gulf Arab countries.

There were a lot of cuts last year....

These things seem so vulnerable.

I don't know.. maybe I'm just paranoid, but my first thoughts included a terrorist plot to sever instantaneous communication b/w countries involved in a terrorist strike - something planned either for Christmas (capitalism at it's best) or the dawn of the new year.

I'm actually pretty worried :/

edit: On the lighter side of things, I'm reminded of the Robot Chicken episode where terrorists somehow managed to eradicate the porn collections in households across America. This cable disruption would be the first step in demoralizing porn-stream-enthusiasts and other porn-enthusiasts.

You're paranoid. 8P

In all previous cases, it turns out ships running aground or dragging anchors in the wrong places cut the cables.

Wasn't it caused by a ship dragging an anchor last year? I don't think it is possible for anyone to know where these cables are exactly

I'm sure whoever put them there and maintains them knows where they are.

Cameras that monitored that area showed that no ships were in that area when the cables were cut. Not long after that was found out, it slipped out of the media and all went back to normal and nobody ever heard about it again.

It's also not really a secret where the cables are located. The last time it happened it was shown that someone with an underwater cutting torch could easily do it. They're not buried very deep at all.

Yeah but the oceans are pretty deep...you can't just go snorkling to get to the bottom of the ocean to cut a cable.

bull****. It slipped out of the media when the ships that screwed up admitted it and proof was established beyond a reasonable doubt what happened.

Has anyone heard the conspiracy theories about this yet?

Really what has happened is the USA attacked the cables and are pointing their finger at terrorists. Bush has proclaimed they will continue their war of terror and are going to bring in new procedures preventing this happening again. Anyone wanting to use a boat or submarine will now have to arrive 4 hours before departure to pass seaport security. You will no longer be allowed to take nail files onto boats as these could be used to cut though the 69mm thick cables. These are just two new incentives to protect possible terrorists from causing such damage again and cripple American freedoms.

Just look at what areas are affected by it the most in each case and compare it to things that were going on at the time. I don't think it's a coincidence that India is the hardest hit right now.

Again. bull****. The areas hardest hit are the ones that...um...actually USE the Internet. There is no conspiracy here...just incompetence and human error.

So are these the cables between North America and Europe, or between Sicily and North Africa?

This article makes no sense.
#15.1 vetSagittarius on 20 Dec 2008 - 03:35
The cables span from North America to Europe and beyond, but they were cut somewhere in the Mediterranean.

duneworld, thats what i want to know.
3 out 4 cables? is that really all we have? do they not have any better way to lay these lines? might be easier to just sent maybe 2 lines into space and have some hanging lines from the sky... i dunno, whole thing sounds sort of silly to me in the way it was put. I guess its just seeing 3 out of 4 lines... maybe thats why the internet is so slow, we only have 4 tubes to share with, and the politicians said it the best. We are just all cramming up our 4 tubes with too much LOL, well, now 1 tube right? lol
#34.1 aarste on 20 Dec 2008 - 17:19
Cables going out to space? I'm no expert in physics but a cable as long as that puts a lot of weight at the bottom, and not to mention all the gravitational stuff going on in space, the cable wouldn't hold.
