And you thought $197 was a deal for an iPhone?

Yesterday Wal-Mart kicked off it's latest deal of the season, offering customers iPhones for $197. But who would have ever thought that a company would compete with Wal-Mart's "Always low prices"?

AT&T has launched a campaign to make those last minute sales of the physical year by offering customers refurbished 8GB iPhones for $99 with a two-year contract, and $199 for the 16GB model. That's $100 savings compared to purchasing the phone brand new. AT&T and Apple have the highest customer ratings when it comes to refurbished merchandise, so these phones are sold at brand new quality standards. These refurbished phones come with a 90 day warranty. AT&T has stated that the phones were returned during the initial 30 day trial period, and some of the phones have been unused.

If you're one of the thousands of customers who have already ordered these refurbished phones, check out Neowin's top 10 iPhone apps, so you're up-to-date with the latest software for your incoming phone!

O2 are offering the 8GB one free in the UK as a refurb if you call their upgrade centre

The bad thing about the refurb AT&T phones is that its only for new customers. Although if you went into the store and complained enough you may be able to get one.

Yeah, I'm considering upgrading to the new one and I'm sure ATT wouldn't mind if I'm paying 10 more bucks a month... whats it called... the "3G fee" AND renew my contract.

Where is the link to this?
AT&T has them listed for $199/$299 (new?). I don't see any link to get the refurbished ones for $99.

EDIT:
Nevermind, I found it:

http://www.wireless.att.com/cell-phone-ser...furb-phones.jsp

So, $99 for the phone... It seems like the CHEAPEST monthly plan then is $70 ($30 Data + $40 Talk), or $150 for unlimited (Data/Talk/Messaging). $150 A MONTH. Every month. That is $3600 for the life of the contract. Of course the phone wont work after the 2 years unless you sign up for another contract, which will probably cost more.

Yeah, I guess I could afford that, but I don't feel it's worth it. $70 a month is too much. My current cell phone costs me $30 a month ($25 talk + $5 messaging) and has no contracts (Virgin Mobile). My home phone is another $20 a month (Vonage). I have a DS Lite for games, and my work provides me with a Windows Mobile phone for mobile Exchange access.

I may contact my higher up at work to see if they will consider iPhones for us during our next product upgrade cycle.

Actually once your contract expires it just means that you are not bound by any terms anymore. Your phone and service will continue to work as if the contract still existed. They just can't hold an ETF above your head in the meantime. Obviously if you make a major plan change or get a new phone then they will likely force you to signup for a new one or two year contract.

Actually you can have 900 nationwide minutes, unlimited data transfer, and unlimited texting for $109/month. Which isn't a bad deal at all IMHO.

I didn't think you could use that plan with an iPhone. The iPhone has their own special plans with AT&T.

90 Days Warranty... and if the phone broke at the 91st day. Do you have to buy a new phone from them because you have a 2 years contract? Anyone knows what rules applies for this situation?

Well if the phone were defective, I'm almost certain that it would break before the first 90 days. I highly doubt there is a "timebomb" waiting to expire on the 91st day. Back to the question at hand, AT&T offers insurance on their phones (Although I am NOT certain what limitations there is for these refurbished phones) that replace and cover 100% of the phones value.

You cannot add insurance to the iphone. It's not allowed.

i always buy refurbished. Save lots of money, and have never had any problems. The one time i did, i got it warrantied, and replaced with a new one. Savings are good. Some people like you dont realize that, and thats cool, more for me lol (not that i would EVER buy an iphone... )

but in this case is pointless to save a few bucks and, at the same time, spend a lot more in a expensive plan.

Why would anyone want to buy anything refurbished? Its like you know ahead that this phone has a known problem and yet you still buy it. I know from my past experience from working at gamestop that buying refurbished anything is bad as they always come back. They always break again.

Sounds like most of them are from people who tried the iPhone or got one for Christmas, didn't like it, and returned it.

Oh yeah right! We all know that ANYONE who picks up an iPhone and tries it falls in love! People not liking the iPhone... ha!

Do you even understand what Refurbished means? They take a broken item, fix it, restore it to AS-NEW condition, and re-sell it, at a much lower price... dummies, its not like they take a broken item and try to resell it. It basically is a brand new item, just it didn't come from the manufacturing floor directly like a new item would.

Actually the *vast* majority of refurbished phones were never broken or malfunctioning. They're often that 'first' phone the customer gets with their contract when they're given 30 days to decide if they want to keep it or not. Whenever somebody decides they don't like it (sometimes this happens after only 2 minutes of use), or it doesn't work with their favorite accessory, or they realize the camera doesn't have a flash, etc, they bring it back to the provider, who now can't sell it as new.

You pretty much have two kinds of phones: new-in-box, and refurbished. But please, everyone, continue to reject refurb products. The resellers love you for doing so, and being so willing to pay the full premium of retail value for something you otherwise wouldn't have to.

While you're at it, buy that 2009 car now! Right now! The winter sale is almost over! Buy it now, before the price plummets when the 2010 models start rolling out! Hurry!

I have 4 LG Shines on my plan all refurbished at $18 a piece that is not a bad savings. A friend of mine opted for a new Shine with his plan quit working in 4 days! There are a lot of things I would never buy refurbished but cell phones are not one of them. Of course I would never buy a IPhone anyway.

I also have a refurbished LG shine, and when I received it from AT&T it didn't have any problems once to ever. No scratches, no dents, no defectiveness. I've had it for about 6 months now, and still have no problems with it (Besides the fact that I neglected to get a screen cover and I've scratched it quite a bit).

I'm thinking that i'm going to let my contract run out w/ Verizon Wireless and switch to AT&T for the iphone. I'm sorry, but the blackberry touch and the HTC Diamond Pro (or whatever) doesn't even compare IMHO.

AT&T...no thanks.
#10 Dane2003 on 30 Dec 2008 - 03:58
Best Buy has it for $189 and $289 for the brand new ones :p. $149 and $249 for Refurbs at BBY.

This make a nonsense, how AT&T and Apple have a highest customer ratings, also they sell refurbished products?. A refurbished cellphone must came from a disgruntling customer, hence its hard to have a high customer rating and so many dissatisfy clients.
#11.1 Joshie on 31 Dec 2008 - 00:55
Yeeeeeeeah, scroll up, read all the other posts defining refurbished, come back and edit your post. Seriously, the bad rap refurb gets has to be coming from somewhere, but I don't see where. Was there some anti-refurb marketing campaign? For all the research people do before buying a cell phone, it just seems so downright unintelligent the way so many people have never bothered to look into the meaning of refurbished. Knee-jerk reactions AGAINST savings, based entirely on word-of-mouth with nothing to back it up?

...and it's NOT the Apple users this time?
