So what had our members posting the most in 2008? We've searched through the archives to find the stories and topics that sparked our member's interest and made them voice their views and opinions. 2008 was an interesting year for Neowin News, as we've rolled our a new design and migrated from cut & paste news to original articles. We hope that your continued activity and readership in 2009 will double this list next year.

By far, the most popular topic was the upcoming Microsoft operating system Windows 7. It dominated the news nearly every month, with a few of them in the top five stories of the year. Followed closely by topics related to Windows Vista or XP (both their "failures" and continued "successes") and then of course discussion of Apple and Mac related products. One story was even so popular that it was able to sneek into the mix on the last day. Sprinkle in a few random stories about the Pope, Scientology and a few rumors that never came to pass... and you have the most popular stories of 2008.

What shocked me the most in coming up with this list, was the lack of discussion about the failed Microsoft-Yahoo merger. Those topics just never got enough traction with our readers to be included.

I think people got really bored with Microsoft-Yahoo merger
#2 lylesback2 on 02 Jan 2009 - 06:13
Very nice list! A lot of memorable stores up there, that deserve to be up. And I completely forgot about the Microsoft-yahoo merger, even though I had written a few of them. Maybe it was for the best it never followed through.

Windows XP living longer! , Firefox 3 and alot of apple discussion threads made my year, I enjoyed yet a hassle-free year on neowin. Keep on rolling boys

Enjoy your new years to all the staff and fellow members and subscribers for making neowin happen i suppose (y)

Thank you for the article! It was a very nice read and a brilliant idea. I hope it happens every year.

There are two mistakes, though: on the second line, "members" should have an apostrophe as it is possessive and on the second-to-last line, Scientology has a typo

I'm not trying to troll or insult, I just thought I'd point it out Michael Everyone makes mistakes and typos occur so I hope you appreciate my input as Neowin succeeds in becoming a more popular (and more professional?) news website.

Brilliant article, though, it bought back many memories of the past year

Thanks No problem.

The wrong "members" was changed, though. It's supposed to be the "members" on the second line of the first paragraph which has the apostrophe. The "members" on the first line doesn't need one

Amateur "grammar nazi"

Since "members" is plural, you make it plural possessive by adding an apostrophe at the end.

member - singular
members - plural
member's - singular possessive
members' - plural possessive

So the correct change would be: "our members' interest"

Which all gets complicated by variations by region. Such as corporations are considered plural in UK English, but a singular entity in US English. "Microsoft is releasing" versus "Microsoft are releasing"

And, even more complicating, is some words like "jury" can be either singular or plural based on whether the rest of the context indicates unity or division. "The jury is decided" versus "The jury are debating the merits"

All of this is a long-winded explanation of the off-topic discussion that the correction ought to have been members'. (and that it can get complex, but as long as we all understand, and it is reasonably close, it doesn't matter much, but can be fun to discuss and analyze)

Ahhh, how could I have missed that!? I already know that when a word is plural you add the apostrophe at the end. I think I was just so caught up, in realising there was no apostprophe there, to not remember that grammar rule

Thank you for correcting my mistake markjensen and for your long explanation I had no idea about corporations being plural in UK English, but singular in US English

I think if a news website aims to be more popular and professional, it is best for all articles to be polished and grammar and punctuation to be the best it possibly can be

The news that made my year was the Jack Thompson Disbarment. I still have a copy of the 4,500-word "Thompson's Formal Objection to June 4 Sanctions hearing" lying around on my hard drive, I like to read it occasionally for a good laugh.

Other than that, I agree with most of the others on the list, save for maybe the launch of the 'windowsandme' website, never heard about that one.
