Apple chief executive Steve Jobs has been suffering from a "hormone imbalance" throughout 2008 but plans to stay on as the company CEO.

In a letter posted by Jobs and addressed to the Apple Community, Jobs confirms he has been suffering from weight loss and ill health for a number of months. Apple fans are desperately hoping Jobs will make a surprise appearance at this weeks MacWorld expo. Jobs was due to keynote at the expo but Apple announced this year is their last MacWorld and no Steve Jobs this time around.

Last week popular gadget blog Gizmodo, posted an article stating Steve Jobs' health was declining rapidly. Moments after the article was posted there were huge volumes (6 million trades) of Apple stock moving around on NASDAQ stock exchange as worried investors sold stock. Digg owner Kevin Rose twittered "just sold all of my AAPL, worried about Job's health :(".

Below is the letter in full from Apple:

Dear Apple Community,

For the first time in a decade, I'm getting to spend the holiday season with my family, rather than intensely preparing for a Macworld keynote.

Unfortunately, my decision to have Phil deliver the Macworld keynote set off another flurry of rumors about my health, with some even publishing stories of me on my deathbed.

I've decided to share something very personal with the Apple community so that we can all relax and enjoy the show tomorrow.

As many of you know, I have been losing weight throughout 2008. The reason has been a mystery to me and my doctors. A few weeks ago, I decided that getting to the root cause of this and reversing it needed to become my #1 priority.

Fortunately, after further testing, my doctors think they have found the cause—a hormone imbalance that has been "robbing" me of the proteins my body needs to be healthy. Sophisticated blood tests have confirmed this diagnosis.

The remedy for this nutritional problem is relatively simple and straightforward, and I've already begun treatment. But, just like I didn't lose this much weight and body mass in a week or a month, my doctors expect it will take me until late this Spring to regain it. I will continue as Apple's CEO during my recovery.

I have given more than my all to Apple for the past 11 years now. I will be the first one to step up and tell our Board of Directors if I can no longer continue to fulfill my duties as Apple's CEO. I hope the Apple community will support me in my recovery and know that I will always put what is best for Apple first.

So now I've said more than I wanted to say, and all that I am going to say, about this.

Steve

Good on God for coming clean about his health. At least it was not cancer and hopefully he makes a full recovery to do Stevenotes again. All hail Steve Jobs!

Wonder if this will cause a firesale of stock.
#4.1 creamhackered on 05 Jan 2009 - 14:53
So far its up 4%
#4.2 PsykX on 05 Jan 2009 - 15:42
Pfff, there's nothing to understand with Apple's stocks IMO.

But I find this is good news. He didn't say he was in "poor" condition. It's not this bad, and there's a straightforward cure. Ahhh, these journalists, they never fail to exagerate the facts.

I'm just glad to hear this.
#4.3 tiddlie on 05 Jan 2009 - 16:19
I can't see a firesale of stock due to this. The news isn't bad. Jobs is still at the helm and is simply taking a 3 month 'break' from working 20 hours a day. If anything the news is good for shareholders, as it means Jobs will be around for some time to come, and it isn' t the cancer that's back and slowly eating at him.
#5 Typhon on 05 Jan 2009 - 14:46
I think he will be fine.
#6 iamwhoiam on 05 Jan 2009 - 14:48
Hope he's doing better and gets better.

Now, everyone that was whining in the forums and bashing those that were saying this was true, you owe them an apology.
#7 AminoSC on 05 Jan 2009 - 14:52
hmmm...sounds fishy.
#8 LTD on 05 Jan 2009 - 14:52
Seems like it might be a thyroid-related issue . . .

Anyway, get well soon, Steve, you HAVE gone above and beyond for Apple all these years. It's indeed time to take it a bit easier.
(3 replies) #9 .Kompressor on 05 Jan 2009 - 14:53
this hormone imbalance is usually along the lines of an over active Thyroid which is treatable..and not a problem..

good to hear he is ok and it's nothing serious....though it would be good for him to start planning a succession/protege.

More likely it relates to his pancreatic cancer, as the pancreas is responsible for the production of several key hormones.

i have the said Thyroind hormonal imbalance, and even a blind (false) doctor can diagnose that with simple blood tests. Do you think he would have just come out saying, 'hi all, im back, and so is my cancer. now lets go back to see the share price plummet to zero.. kthxbay' ?

Whoa there, cowboy. I wasn't suggesting that his pancreatic cancer was back but that it is responsible for the hormone imbalance. The pancreas IS responsible for a lot of important hormones and he DID have pancreatic cancer. It's not rocket science to connect the two together.

Get well soon, Steve!

Lots and lots of whey powder is a great way to get protein. Wonder if he's been told to take something similar to help recover what he's lost.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Whey_protein#Uses
#13.1 tiddlie on 05 Jan 2009 - 16:22
I can imagine it's a slightly more complex treatment than a protein shake every few hours! It is likely that his body is actively destroying its protein due to the hormonal imbalance, rather than him not taking enough in to start with. Its more likely to be a hormone therapy.
#13.2 +CrimsonRedMk on 05 Jan 2009 - 22:16
Here come countless stories about rumors of what the meds are, as stock tumbles at Pfizer and competitors as to the exact brand. I love Apple!
#14 bdsams on 05 Jan 2009 - 15:30
while i wish him a speedy recovery it still seems odd to be hormone imbalance...if it truly is, figure out the hormones and give them to all the over weight people of the world
#15 Neoauld on 05 Jan 2009 - 16:03
if apple cures overweightness..ill buy their products to help the millions of overweight people
(1 reply) #16 C_Guy on 05 Jan 2009 - 16:15
It's disappointing to see Steve share so much personal information because people will over-react to it. If the guy is healthy enough to be CEO then that's all people need to know. If he's not then they deserve to know that, but they don't need any details about it.

Besides, it's not like Apple will collapse and die if Steve does have to step down. That sure is a slap in the face to everyone else who has "given their all" to Apple.
#16.1 tiddlie on 05 Jan 2009 - 16:24
The problem is, in the Apple world, and their investors opinion. Steve is an invaluable asset to the company, and after the turn around he more or less single handedly engineered into place, it's hard for these people to get that out of their head.

I think, if anything, Steve coming out with this message should only stabilise the press and markets, rather than causing anything bad.
#17 Sevan on 05 Jan 2009 - 16:17
Poor guy, I knew something was up. I just knew it.

Best of wishes to good ol' Steve.
#18 macrosslover on 05 Jan 2009 - 16:20
Yeah I'm glad he could be open, finally, about what was affecting him. RDF aside hope he gets better.

Very nice to see kind sentiments from everyone here on Neowin, regardless of opinions.

It speaks volumes about our strength as an online community.
#19.1 Scirwode on 06 Jan 2009 - 03:54
I don't think anyone wants anything bad to happen to Steve Jobs. As much as people disagree with some of his ideas, he is a very good CEO and in my opinion, a very good presenter. If I can present as well as him, I'll be pleased as punch.

I may disagree with Apple's direction but I only have the utmost respect for Steve and the company itself.

If this would have come months ago... I'd believe it.

But it comes just before macworld and is really only half truths... hormonal imbalance is often a symptom for a much worse case.

Personally dont care for such news, the health of a CEO is none of my business and neither is it anyone elses. Looking forward to the keynotes though.

Actually, it is relevant to investors..

I'm glad he cleared this up as the rumors were starting to damage Apple, compounded by his silence! And more importantly, I'm glad that he's on the road to recovery.. I always enjoy watching 'Steve-notes' so look forward to many more of them with exciting new products. Apple is doing so well at the moment with some killer products and there is no doubt that it ultimately comes down to the steering that Steve gives the company.

Onwards and upwards! Boom!

well I hope he gets better soon, having a chronic disease must be hell
#28 xendrome on 05 Jan 2009 - 20:28
Honestly there is a huge difference between "poor health" and a "condition".... he has a condition, not poor health. A lot of people have conditions and are in perfectly good health... sure he's lost some weight, but not they have a proper diag. and I'm sure he'll be fine. I just find it funny how the media always has to try to make something sound much more serious then it is.. to try to gain readers.
#29 EchoNoise on 05 Jan 2009 - 21:56
Sounds like what killed Bruce Lee.
#30 KeR on 05 Jan 2009 - 22:02
Glad to hear this was the issue, meaning he will be back hosting other Apple Events.

#31 +CrimsonRedMk on 05 Jan 2009 - 22:17
Kevin Rose is stupid. Macworld's keynote and tons of new products are out tomorrow - sell right afterwards!
#32 pavas59 on 05 Jan 2009 - 22:46
I am glad to hear that Steve Jobs is finally telling the world what is ailing him. He has been the force behind new technology ideas for the last decade and it will be a terrible loss for the world if something was to happen to him. I am optimist that he will recover soon. I just recently saw (again) the "Pirates of the Silicon Valley" movie and got very excited about technology and the computer industry in general. Jobs is a visionary and I know he still has many ideas in him that can change the world.

I guess this will evaporate rumors that tomorrow's Keynote won't bring anything special as Schiller is doing it; but maybe there will be some exciting announcements after all, as it was Steve's decision not to present the Keynote.
#35 +Chrono951 on 06 Jan 2009 - 02:37
Why does this matter? People are acting like teenage girls drooling over their favorite idol and their every move. Let the man alone. Personal issues like this should not influence a company's performance and should not be such a huge deal.
#36 mclaren05 on 06 Jan 2009 - 02:46
Im sorry Steve but I do not believe this.

Publicity stunt FTW.
#37 boho on 06 Jan 2009 - 08:10
Hope he's got good health cover for this "hormone imbalance". I thought that's what women got!
#38 trenzterra on 06 Jan 2009 - 09:00
heh, seems like Steve Jobs is not spared from apple's trend of slimming down its products =\
#39 Juski814 on 06 Jan 2009 - 10:20
Well I hope everything works out for him. Glad, that despite worries and rumors, he hasn't gotten anything more serious to worry about health wise.

could he be any more cryptic?

Most doctors have said, what jobs just announced tells us NOTHING!.
