Google is planning to release a beta of the popular photo editing/viewing program Picasa on the Mac today.

According to Jason Cook from Picasa the features you will be seeing in the beta will be the most of the features you currently see in the Windows version. They are going to try to implement more features like geotagging in the coming weeks.

The question is how many Mac users will use the program? Picasa think the fan base will be big with many Mac users requesting the program, "We have many Mac users, and we think they'll be excited about this. It makes the Picasa Web Albums experience better" said Cook. With the massive surge of Photo Editing on the internet people are turning away from installing programs onto their systems for the ease of use, but there are still a majority of people that like to edit using a proper program with powerful editing tools.

According to the makers, the program will be different from iPhoto but will not affect the program in any way, you could edit an image in Picasa but it will remain the same in iPhoto and if you rate something in iPhoto, Picasa will read it but don't expect iPhoto to reciprocate.

I never got too much of a chance to compare this to iPhoto, but can anyone that runs both Windows and OS X compare the two programs?

I prefer Picasa over iPhoto any day. At least on Windows, it is an amazing tool. I take lots of photos at work, and Picasa makes it easy for me to fly through 100's of photos while touching up/cropping/straightening. Its awesome. I hope this mac version delivers.

I might give Picasa a try then.

It's been available for several hours now. Been looking forward to this. It was one of the few Windows apps I missed.

I am also still deciding if its worth installing... I don't really do image editing, I just want a program to help me manage my photos.

It isn't image editing. It is photo touch-up, and organization tool much like iPhoto.

No kidding. After switching to a Mac, there were very few Windows apps that I missed... Picasa was one of the few.

Is it a port using WINE like the Linux version is?

I can't stand iphoto. It complete rearranges your folder structure to how it wants it and there's nothing you can do about it.
Picasa not only leaves it alone but is also more organized.

Agreed. On a side note, I've installed Picasa, but an error keeps popping up about movie thumbnails and I have no choice but to close it. Hope they'll fix this soon.

People who complain about iPhoto or iTunes "messing up their folder structure" simply aren't using the programs the way they were designed to be used, or are expecting them to work the same way similar programs work in Windows. The entire idea of those programs is to manage your photos or songs without having to know or care where they are in your system.

iTunes at least has some kind of logic behind its madness... iPhoto just throws things into a blender and throws them wherever it feels like.

I do want to know, and do care where my photos are. Music, not so much.

+1

iPhoto stores all photos in a SINGLE library file, usually in your Pictures folder. Pretty easy to view the contents of it, and all photos are sorted logically within it. But you're supposed to use iPhoto as the front-end and not have a massive folder full of images.

Yeah, the idea of being able to organize your files and folders in a way that makes sense to you ... on your computer ... is just MADNESS.

FYI:

iPhoto --> Preferences --> Advanced

. . . and untick "Copy files to iPhoto Library folder"

Now iPhoto organizes files like iTunes and we can all stop crying and moaning.

at least it's nice to have a choice now and Picasa looks like it will be my main photo app

For ordinary image editing and viewing, Picasa is pretty good. It's default settings for sorting are a little odd, but once you get it working the way you like, it's fine. For more serious editing, I use Paint Shop Pro which, for me at least, is a lot better than Photoshop.

"Google is planning to release a beta"
Bets on how long that will be beta for?
