Steve Jobs takes medical leave of absence

Apple CEO Steve Jobs today sent the following email to all Apple employees:

Team,

I am sure all of you saw my letter last week sharing something very personal with the Apple community. Unfortunately, the curiosity over my personal health continues to be a distraction not only for me and my family, but everyone else at Apple as well. In addition, during the past week I have learned that my health-related issues are more complex than I originally thought.

In order to take myself out of the limelight and focus on my health, and to allow everyone at Apple to focus on delivering extraordinary products, I have decided to take a medical leave of absence until the end of June.

I have asked Tim Cook to be responsible for Apple's day to day operations, and I know he and the rest of the executive management team will do a great job. As CEO, I plan to remain involved in major strategic decisions while I am out. Our board of directors fully supports this plan.

I look forward to seeing all of you this summer.

Steve

Apple originally broke the news in December that it would no longer attend MacWorld and that Steve Jobs would not appear. Rumours of Jobs' health spiralled out of control and affected the companies stock price. Jobs later admitted to poor health the day before this years MacWorld. Unfortunately this years MacWorld wasn't as impressive as many had hoped and rumours regarding Jobs' health were still making the rounds. Jobs has now addressed these rumours in the email above.

According to Reuters Apple shares were temporarily halted. After hours trading AAPL stock is currently down 7.85% at the time of writing. Twitter is currently buzzing with 1000s of tweets regarding the news.

what? o.o I don't need him....

while I agree he is a marketing genius, Apple doesn't need him to survive, except all those apple fanboys who are going cry when he leaves as CEO.

oh... and get well soon Steve.

thats sad how the health of one person can impact a company so much. Not to mention make the stocks volatile.
but for the sake of Apple, lets hope this isn't a long term thing and he gets better

From Wikipedia. Journal citations are available.

Depending on the extent of the tumor at the time of diagnosis, the prognosis is generally regarded as poor, with less than 5 percent of those diagnosed still alive five years after diagnosis, and complete remission still extremely rare.[1] About 95 percent[citation needed] of pancreatic tumors are adenocarcinomas (M8140/3). The remaining 5 percent include other tumors of the exocrine pancreas (e.g., serous cystadenomas), acinar cell cancers, and pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors (such as insulinomas, M8150/1, M8150/3). These tumors have a completely different diagnostic and therapeutic profile, and generally a more favorable prognosis.[1]

"Patients diagnosed with pancreatic cancer typically have a poor prognosis partly because the cancer usually causes no symptoms early on, leading to locally advanced or metastatic disease at time of diagnosis. Median survival from diagnosis is around 3 to 6 months; 5-year survival is less than 5%.[19] With 37,170 cases diagnosed in the United States in 2007, and 33,700 deaths, pancreatic cancer has one of the highest fatality rates of all cancers and is the fourth highest cancer killer in the United States among both men and women. Although it accounts for only 2.5% of new cases, pancreatic cancer is responsible for 6% of cancer deaths each year.[20]
Pancreatic cancer may occasionally result in diabetes. Insulin production is hampered and it has been suggested that the cancer can also prompt the onset of diabetes and vice versa.[21] Thus diabetes is both a risk factor for the development of pancreatic cancer and diabetes can be an early sign of the disease in the elderly."

Let's hope it's nothing too closely related to that.

I honestly can't believe that a whole company is so focused on a single guy. As SignalPirate said - the reliance, in particular on stocks on a single man is just insane! Hope he gets well etc. (as I would any human who is ill) but it shows that Apple really needs to shake up a bit cause he ain't going to last forever....

Cook is capable at the helm. We know Schiller is can do a keynote. The former NeXT crew at Apple are all visionary in their own right.

The most important thing, however, is that one strong personality emerges from the pack and keeps Apple on course with a firm hand. Jobs is an excellent example of this.

By all accounts he'll be back in June. But only time will tell.

Oh man, I hope this doesn't get even more serious or anything - this might be part of the grand iTest of what would happen to Apple if he wasn't around, which might lead to him quitting entirely in June. He could very well make the WWDC keynote his last, launching a slew of new products and "one more thing", I'm leaving. That would be a bad.

Ive's work is among the best in industrial design, and his team's products have repeatedly won awards such as the Industrial Designers Society of America's Industrial Design Excellence Award.

Ive was the winner of the Design Museum's inaugural Designer of the Year award in 2002, and won again in 2003. In 2004, he was a juror for the award.

The Sunday Times named Ive as one of Britain's most influential expatriates on 27 November 2005: "Ive may not be the richest or the most senior figure on the list, but he has certainly been one of the most influential... The man who designed the iPod and many more of Apple's most iconic products has shaken up both the music and the electronics industry." Ive was number three on a list of 25.

Ive was also listed in the 2006 New Years Honours list, receiving a CBE, for services to the design industry.

A recent Macworld poll listed Ive joining Apple in 1992 as the sixth most significant event in Apple history, while MacUser writer Dan Moren suggested recently that, when the time comes for Steve Jobs to step down as CEO of Apple, Ive would be an excellent candidate for the position, justifying the statement by saying that he "embodies what Apple is perhaps most famous for: design."

On July 18, 2007, Ive received the 2007 National Design Award in the product design category for his work on the iPhone.

The Daily Telegraph rated him the most influential Briton in America on 11 January 2008, 16 places ahead of his fellow Waltham Forest native David Beckham despite the massive publicity received in 2007 by his move to Los Angeles Galaxy.

In July 2008, Ive was awarded the MDA Personal Achievement award for the design of the iPhone.

Done.
#20.3 Axon on 15 Jan 2009 - 02:34
While I wholly agree that the design of Apple products is vitally important, the usability is what is responsible for the proliferation of the iPod. Yes it looked cool, but what was important was that anyone could use them. The simplistic elegance of the interface employed by Apple really made the difference.

It must be incredibly frustrating for the rest of Apple to see their stock price plunge and to hear so many people say that Apple will decline, fail, or disappear with the departure of one person. I'm sure Stevie himself wouldn't want his loyal followers to give up on Apple just because he is leaving.

Look at Microsoft. They are still loyal to Bill's vision, they still accept his input. And they are doing just fine. Some would argue they are doing better now than in recent years with all the anticipation over Windows 7.

Apple's loyal follower need to grow up, move out of mom's basement, and get a clue. Do you really think Steve would set up Apple to collapse and die without his leadership? Or do you think he set people in place to resume his strategic vision after his departure? Hhmmmm... that's a toughie.

I do indeed hope he gets better.
#27.2 LTD on 15 Jan 2009 - 11:47
That's alright. It's comforting to know, though, that all the talent is at Apple. It's not Apple or their success that I'm worried about - that's a train that can't be stopped.

Rather, I feel sad for a man who has achieved so much, and with such a fierce vision for the industry, who is now (not at a very old age) quite ill.

We still aren't sure whether it's actually cancer or whether it's a malabsorption issue brought on by the treatment (whipple procedure) he received in 2004.
