Teen racks up 14,528 texts in one month

Brad Sams   on 14 January 2009 - 14:16 · 106 comments & 13389 views

Advertisement (Why?)
In California a 13 year old girl was able to rack up an astounding 14,528 text messages in one month. For those keeping track that's 484 a day which breaks down to 20 an hour or 1 every three minutes, for the entire month!

When asked, Reina Hardesty's replied that "I just like to talk", which is ironic because she was texting and not actually talking. Her parents were at least wise enough that they did sign her up for unlimited texting but if they had not her bill would have amounted to $2,811. For more information about the cost of text messaging to the carrier you can read this article as previously reported on Neowin.

Her parents have responded to the outrageous amount of texting by limiting her use of the cell phone in which she responded, "lke omg ur so mean."

Assuming she sleeps, that actually increases the amount of texts per hour, pushing it close to one text every two minutes.
I don't see how that's even possible, unless every message was about two or three characters. And what of the people she messaged - if her messages were replies, they should also have huuuge numbers of sent texts
How did no-one notice or do anything?

Maybe if she spent more time paying attention in class and less time obsessed with her phone she would have at least Kindergarten level English.

Give her land-line only for a month. She will be horrified to learn that she can survive. Her life might even improve!

The most I text is roughly 6500 to 7000 messages a month. I thought that was a great deal of texting.
I have a HTC Fuze and I hope it can handle the abuse I give it.

I think a great many of us just cannot understand what you could type in so many messages, so any clarification would be quite enlightening

So, you guys see nothing wrong with beating children? How mature hitting someone who can't defend themselves. No wonder America is so screwed up. You do know that in the long run that sort of abuse never actually works. Only lazy parents beat their kids instead of using proper discipline. And only a disturbed mind would also see any humor at all in showing it. Places that have corporal punishment also have a higher incidence of abuse of the elderly as well. Payback.

P.S.

I'm not being "politically correct" either. Its far too easy to dismiss someone just by labeling them that. Child abuse is a real issue whether it be physical, verbal, or sexual. It is nothing to laugh at.....

It's a CARTOON. It is not intended to be real. Just like Tom and Jerry. They hit each other with hammers.

It's a stretch to suggest that's condoning such actions.

Actually, back in the days when spanking was allowed and kids knew if they messed up that they were gonna get beat they tended to show a little bit more respect. Now the appropriate punishment is...almost...nothing. "Go to your room!" Yeah great, where they have a PC, TV, and video game systems to play with. Real punishment there. What exactly IS accepted discipline anymore? I've seen the papers from my local child enforcement office about what you CAN'T do to a kid....and reading it leaves you scratching your head and wondering exactly what you CAN do.

Although it does sound extreme. It's not really all that crazy. Sure it is a lot but considering her age. How many friends do the average teen/preteen have? How many have phones now and send text's? I myself only really text a few people (usually around 3-4) in a month but not all the time and still end up with around 3000-5000. I'm not a teen and I'm not usuing it for work either. The bulk of my messages are done in the evening/night and just a lot easier to send a text than to have to sit on a phone talking. It eliminates the wasted time sitting with a phone to the ear and nothing being said sometimes and makes it so you can actually still do things while talking and not lose total focus on what you're doing. I have a lot of friends too online that I just prefer to talk to online. I could easily average 10,000+ messages a month of I wanted to bug these people while on the road or away from the computer. I don't exactly have unlimited texts too. I get 2500 with my plan plus I have My10 with unlimited to any 10 numbers in Canada. Since all the people I text are in My10, I usually only use a couple hundred from the 2500.

I think I'd rather have my child texting than using the phone. I would still like the option of regulating and as far as I know. There are options for parents to do that. Correct me if I'm wrong. If there aren't, we need to set something up.

And the bigger issue here is grammer too. I have a lot bigger issue with grammer than the actually amount of talking that's going on.
#17.1 Nas on 14 Jan 2009 - 20:39
"grammar" (in both American and British English).

Humans communicate faster by voice than hand motions (typed, texted, or sign language). Whether people know when to end conversations is an entirely different story.
#17.2 leojei on 15 Jan 2009 - 02:45
I thought neowin was meant to be unprofessional journalism... which means grammar/"grammer" isn't really that important, as long as it makes much sense.

I'm confused.
Her parents were at least wise enough that they did sign her up for unlimited texting.

So if she sent 2 texts a month of 20,000 it didnt cost them anything...
Her parents have responded to the outrageous amount of texting by limiting her use of the cell phone.

So they just limited her use of the cell phone because she sends too many texts?
Would they rather she go out taking drugs, drinking alcohol and/or getting pregnant? Seriously. Priorities?

How do you limit someones use of a cell phone anyway? "You can only have it from 3pm to 8pm, the rest of the time we lock it in a safe!". Kinda defeats the purpose.

How is she going to find out where to drink, get high, and get rogered by the football team if she can't text?

Also: do you really that's the alternative? "Well, I can't send a text message so I guess I'll just pound a shot and **** a hobo instead."

Yes, that's pretty reasonable. "no cell-phone during school hours" or maybe "If your next bill says your spending every waking minute messing with your phone then we'll stop paying for it.". You can also call your carrier and have them limit who you can receive or send calls to/from.

she doesnt need to be the one with the most texts in a month to be extreme. 3-4k per month means she could go crazy if you take away her phone for a week.

Is this really getting that much attention? Thats not much by any means where I live..
Myself (18 ) Do around 12k a month while still in highschool.. My sister who's 15 easily beats that by doing around 15-20k a month.
My friend Kylie supposedly has reachde 36k. And it's Highly believeable if youve ever seen her text.

Yeah, I text about 5k and thought that was ridiculous. This is absurd, and the dude who is saying 36k is completely crazy. Lol. Phone calls work, but you can't call your friends for every little funny thing or thought. Text on the other hand is a very nice way to keep everyone chattering I tihnk.

me personally if you got a fricking PHONE , USE IT what it's MADE for! (nowadays it seems like kids use the phone for everything but it's original purpose LOL)

cause texting can be good at times if you just want to say something quick (or even a couple replies or something along those lines) to a person and dont really need to call them, but if your going to talk THAT MUCH you would be better off just calling them and actually TALKING. lol

and me personally i think 'texting' is best on IM programs like MSN/Yahoo/AIM on a real PC and not a fricking phone. lol

I really wish there was a way to deliberately go to voice mail and not make the person's phone ring.

No one has mentioned this here... but a sms is 160 char long.... when you are writing nowdays, you can write one long sms and it gets charged based on dividing the text by 160 char.

Thus she might write long messages that seem to BLOW out the real amount of messages she sends....

Someone should just take away her phone and make her write whatever she wants to say on post-it notes.

I don't understand why this is news.... 14k txt aren't that many for a teen girl... especially if you consider how the cell phone providers count txt messages... That 14k messages probably included both incoming and outgoing... so let's say she really only sent at most 7K, one every 6 minutes. If she is like my daughter.... she probably has numerous friends texting her, some of which she responds to, some of which she doesnt.... overall, my daughters txts probably are 5:1 outgoing vs. incoming.... So if my daughter sent 14k txts msgs, she really "sent" ~2300 and received the rest.... Having said that... thank goodness for unlimited texting.... Also, for a while my daughter was averaging a phone replacement every 3 or 4 months... thank goodness for warranty replacement....
