Even with recent news that Microsoft is planning on laying off about 17% of it's employees, the software giant launched it's Lunar New Year promotion. From now until February 15th 2009, residents of Hong Kong will have an opportunity to win some golden XBox 360's. Although these consoles are not solid gold, they are worth a lot more than what participants will have to pay to enter the competition.

To enter the competition you need to purchase a XBox 360 with a 60GB hard drive or an XBox 360 elite. The last step is sending an e-mail to Microsoft explaining why you love your XBox. There has been no word if any other regions will also have a competition like this. The winners will be announced on March 1st 2009.

They should do this in Latin America

Must be legal to require a purchase in Japan.

Shame on them. It's illegal to require a purchase to enter a sweepstakes in the US, but it's ok to do it in another country, so they do it.

Pretty sure in the UK a sweepstake always requires a purchase/paying to enter to be considered a sweepstake. Don't really see any problem with free prize draws with purchases, its just a comp they throw in, like a free game. Might even buy an Xbox over there when I go.

As far as I know, it's illegal in the UK to have to purchase a product to enter a competition (which is why almost every competition has "no purchase necessary" plastered all over it.

I've never understood them though, because on a chocolate bar for instance the code required is inside? They expecting you to steal it? Or is it because they provide a "or enter online" option?

Easy, call it a raffle. You have to buy tickets to enter into the competition.

At least in the States, the disclaimer is always "Send a letter to this address and we'll send you a code number."

Wow, so because it's not allowed in the US, it MUST be wrong?

Sorry if I don't immediately take that position.

Forgive me for being a bit crass, but why is this main-page news if you have to be a hong kong resident to participate?
#4.1 Minimoose on 17 Jan 2009 - 19:17
Because the competition is ridiculous, therefore making it quite interesting. Also the website is not 'USA only' as ozgeek said.

I thought the same thing...

Because we have readers from all over the world. We might not have a strong user base from Asia, but we like to cover as much as we can here at Neowin.

Damn right. This is an international site.

Caleo, why should Neowin only focus on USA only? Not everyone here is from the US.

Sean, you might want to edit the opening bit of this thread: there are NO layoffs happening or planned at Microsoft.

If you believe rumor and hype, the only one to blame for looking foolish is yourself.

Scott, there have been comments from people within Microsoft that started the actual rumour. We wouldn't have reported it back in December, along with many well-known journalists, if we didn't have confirmation. Although we've not heard anything yet, doesn't mean they are not going to start laying off people.

I think this is the issue: we don't have "confirmation".

I fail to see why the layoffs are even mentioned in this article. The fact that MS are doing a big promotion has no link at all, in any way, to the staff layoffs (if they even happen!

Staff layoffs are to save money. Promotions like this are a direct opposite. They are there to make money for the company. MS are not going to be paying through the nose for gold xbox 360's to make a loss. They obviously expect the markup of the consoles they will sell to cover the cost of the prizes, and then some!

+1

So let me get this straight... you've got to buy an Xbox 360 to have a chance of winning a second one?

Also the line "...they are worth a lot more than what participants will have to pay to enter the competition." makes me laugh. It wouldn't be much of a prize if it was worth less than the entry fee :-) However all you're really gaining if you win is some gold paint.
#9 Team C0re on 18 Jan 2009 - 21:48
Why not just use the money you spend on Entering instead on buying a gold CASE ? lol
