Even with recent news that Microsoft is planning on laying off about 17% of it's employees, the software giant launched it's Lunar New Year promotion. From now until February 15th 2009, residents of Hong Kong will have an opportunity to win some golden XBox 360's. Although these consoles are not solid gold, they are worth a lot more than what participants will have to pay to enter the competition. To enter the competition you need to purchase a XBox 360 with a 60GB hard drive or an XBox 360 elite. The last step is sending an e-mail to Microsoft explaining why you love your XBox. There has been no word if any other regions will also have a competition like this. The winners will be announced on March 1st 2009.

At least in the States, the disclaimer is always "Send a letter to this address and we'll send you a code number."
Wow, so because it's not allowed in the US, it MUST be wrong?
Sorry if I don't immediately take that position.
Because we have readers from all over the world. We might not have a strong user base from Asia, but we like to cover as much as we can here at Neowin.
Damn right. This is an international site.
If you believe rumor and hype, the only one to blame for looking foolish is yourself.

Scott, there have been comments from people within Microsoft that started the actual rumour. We wouldn't have reported it back in December, along with many well-known journalists, if we didn't have confirmation. Although we've not heard anything yet, doesn't mean they are not going to start laying off people.
I think this is the issue: we don't have "confirmation".
Staff layoffs are to save money. Promotions like this are a direct opposite. They are there to make money for the company. MS are not going to be paying through the nose for gold xbox 360's to make a loss. They obviously expect the markup of the consoles they will sell to cover the cost of the prizes, and then some!
Also the line "...they are worth a lot more than what participants will have to pay to enter the competition." makes me laugh. It wouldn't be much of a prize if it was worth less than the entry fee :-) However all you're really gaining if you win is some gold paint.
