Google is to launch a service that would enable users to access their personal computer from any internet connection, according to industry reports. But campaigners warn that it would give the online behemoth unprecedented control over individuals' personal data.

The Google Drive, or "GDrive", could kill off the desktop computer, which relies on a powerful hard drive. Instead a user's personal files and operating system could be stored on Google's own servers and accessed via the Internet.

My hard drive is faster at reading than a 1gigabit connection, so an OS stored remotely - no thanks.

im sorry but "which relies on a powerful hard drive"? um my hard drive isn't powerful at all... it stores data... not processes it

I'd love a remote storage drive that fully links with both my computer and gmail though.. Like in gmail clicking "save this file to my gdrive" or automatically having a backup of all my pictures online.

Financial stuff though... not interested.

This is A) old news (everyone has been reporting this rumor every few weeks for some time now), and B) not actually news at all, just another bloggy type piece stating that "rumor is this might happen this year." Well, you know what, rumor is the Sun will rise tomorrow too...what a waste of time.

How is this going to replace your desktop it's just online storage. The only type of files people tend to store are pictures and documents (things they want to backup). You can already do this with google's services already. There is far from enough funtionallity to replace you desktop.

1gbit unlimited home Internet? and even 1gbit will be slower than modern SSD drives and just a bit faster than classic HDD. but this is about one task linear read, how about multitasking...

it won't happen, RangerLG...

If GDrive is to "kill off the desktop computer", then what are you going to use GDrive on, besides notebooks etc?
